Tabletop Mercenary, Episode 15- Contacts and Allies (The Importance of Networking in TTRPGs)
Talent, drive, ideas, and creative currency are all important parts of being a TTRPG professional. However, one of the most important things you can do to advance your career is an aspect of the job most of us don't like, or even think about much... networking.
This week I wanted to share some of my own stories from the field, and provide some suggestions for how you can improve your own networking in the field of tabletop roleplaying games, as well as the rest of the publishing industry.

Tabletop Mercenary, Episode 14: You Get Paid For What You Sell, Not What You Create
This week I want to talk about everyone's LEAST favorite aspect of making TTRPGs... actually selling copies of the stuff you make.
Because most writers don't want to be salespeople, it's a necessary part of the job. And, most importantly, sales of your game, and the quality of your game, are only tangentially related to each other. So keep that in mind, because it can really trip you up.

Tabletop Mercenary, Episode 13: Some Thoughts on Being A Paid Dungeon Master
Most of what I've talked about on this show thus far has been how to make a living writing and publishing games... but the phenomenon of the paid Game Master is something I figured I'd weigh in on because it is a legitimate way to make a living in the TTRPG space. However, like anything else, you need to go in with your eyes open, and to understand the challenges you're going to face.

Tabletop Mercenary, Episode 12: The Pros and Cons of Community Use Platforms
Community use platforms are agreements that let you create content for games that exist in someone else's world, setting, or game, utilizing their intellectual property for your product. While they seem too good to be true for some of us, it's important to remember there are potential drawbacks, and that you need to go in with your eyes open.

The Liminal Horror of "Changeling: The Lost"
The word "liminal" refers to a place or a period that's in transition. Liminal aesthetics, and liminal horror, derive their unique impact from the uncanny feeling we get when we experience them, because our brains feel that something isn't right, even if we can't put our finger on what, or why.
Most of us think of Internet spook stories like The Backrooms, or the Stairs in The Woods when we think of liminal horror... what we don't tend to think of, though, is the tabletop RPG Changeling: The Lost. However, if you want to look at the horror of this game through fresh eyes, come with me on this journey, and let us walk through this period of transition and transgression together.

Tabletop Mercenary, Episode 11: The Best (And Worst) Sellers For TTRPG Products
When you're making tabletop RPG materials, it can sometimes be hard to know what's actually going to do numbers, and what's likely to flop. While nothing is a sure-fire investment of your time, energy, and artistic skill, I've been in the business for a decade now, and these are the trends I've seen both with my own products, and with other people's when it comes to what sells, and what doesn't.

Tabletop Mercenary, Episode 10: Talking About Design Bloat in TTRPGs
It's sometimes hard to know when enough is enough when it comes to TTRPGs. However, if you aren't careful, you can easily wind up with both design bloat, and mission creep. Keeping these two terms in mind can help you trim the fat from your games, while also making sure you aren't biting off more than you can chew.

Tabletop Mercenary, Episode 9: Ideas Are Inherently Worthless
Too many of us think that ideas are like this hidden vein of gold in an untapped mine, and that we can't tell anyone about them lest they "steal" our fortune. However, ideas by themselves are worthless. They're rocks. The only thing that gives them worth is whether you make something out of them. So don't share your actual work... but if someone would have to make their own game, write their own novel, film their own movie, etc., then they aren't "stealing" an idea. They're doing their own work. Which is what you should be doing!

Tabletop Mercenary, Episode 8: Understanding Evergreen Content
When you design TTRPG content for a living, you can't just think about what people are playing today. You need to think about what they're going to be playing next week, next month, next year, and if possible, decades from now. Which is why it's important to ask what the shelf life of your games and supplements are... because if something can stand the test of time, then you're going to be able to sell to generation after generation of gamers!

The Butcher's Toll- The Tale of Barabbas (An Exalted Story)
Barabbas was a simple man in a complicated world. A husband. A father. A butcher. His life was small, but it was his... until it was taken from him. Shackled in the darkness of a mine, his wife and children taken from him, he was on the verge of being executed for leading a slave revolt... until a demon whispered to him from the blackness.
There are some bargains a man cannot afford to turn away. Remade in the green hellfire of Malfeas's own heart, Barabbas emerged a force to be reckoned with. Some shook the devil's hand for glory, prestige, or postion... but there is nothing more dangerous than a man who damned himself in the name of love, as those who destroyed his old life will soon find out for themselves.
This story is the first in a series of character trailers for Exalted's Second Edition. The intention at time of uploading is to tell the tales of Barabbas's other companions as they seek to undo the many flaws and faults of Creation. Will they truly change the world for the better? Or will this Green Sun Prince and his allies merely damn those they touch, despite their good intentions?

Tabletop Mercenary, Episode 6: Don't Go Chasing Design Trends
In the publishing world there is nothing more likely to give you serious problems than chasing trends. If you want to hit a moving target, you need to aim where it's GOING to be, not where it was. And it's better to learn that lesson before you invest a huge amount of time, energy, and money into a product that would have been a smash hit 4 years ago, instead of connecting with the audience of today.

Tabletop Mercenary Episode 4: The Pros, Cons, and Challenges of Making Your Own TTRPG
A lot of us, when we decide to throw our hats into the ring to become TTRPG designers jump right into the deep end, feet first. However, if you're planning on making your very own TTRPG from the ground up, you should take a moment to evaluate whether this is really what you want to do. Because while there are pros to this strategy, there are also cons that you should keep in mind before putting the pedal to the metal, and committing to this path of action.

Emotional Weather Report, Winter 2023 (A Radio Free Fae Production)
We managed to muddle our way through the challenges of Fall, but even as Winter settles its grip over the city, there's turmoil beneath our very skin. A lost Promise has vanished, and the light brush of Snow has disappeared right alongside it. In a pivotal moment, we are all left exposed... but the answers to where this moment had its birth can be found many years in the past. Those answers, though, will not help undo that which has been done.

However, there were some definite watershed moments that led me from where I was, to where I am now, and I thought I would walk folks through them, and explain what you all can learn from my journey so that yours can be that much shorter.

In this second episode of Tabletop Mercenary I cover the basic ways you make money as a professional in this field. From a broad overview of freelance work, into self-publishing your own game, and into all of the associated media that makes up the tabletop RPG ecosystem.
Though I touch on a lot of topics in this video, and I provide some numbers as to what you're going to be looking for as a gaming professional, I don't get too deep into the details this time around. Mr. Nowhere's Emotional Weather Report, Fall 2023
Even as we find ourselves in mourning for the Summer Season, it's important to remind ourselves that we are entering the Fall. It's the season of pumpkin spice, jack-o-lanterns, and fear, we need to make sure we decide whether we will be the hunted, or the hunters. Keep your teeth sharp out there, friends and fiends, and make sure you keep a clarity of mind as you do what needs to be done.

50 Two-Sentence Horror Stories, Cthulhu Mythos Edition
There are things man was not meant to know. Truths about the universe too terrible to contemplate. These secrets, whispered in cult rituals and recorded in the curling pages of ancient grimoires, are what make up the Cthulhu Mythos... and if you are in need of some Yog-Sothothery, as H.P. Lovecraft himself would have called it, then enjoy these short tales of terror!

50 Two Sentence Horror Stories, SCP Foundation Edition
There are things in our world that would drive you mad just to know of them. Monsters from the dark, and horrific myths made flesh that should not exist. These things are anomalies, and the only thing protecting us are the personnel of the SCP Foundation. For all their money, influence, and military might, though, it's possible for the anomalies to slip their chains... these are just some of the stories one might hear if they rise high enough to read the foundation's unredacted files.

50 Two-Sentence Horror Stories
For some people, horror is all about building suspense. It's the slow ratcheting up of tension until you get a sudden explosion of terror, or a glimpse into the cosmic workings of some madman's universe. Two-sentence horror stories, though, challenge you to tell us a story without all that time and space. You have the space of a breath to reach into our brains, and hot-wire that fear response. So let's get started, shall we?

Dead Man's Bluff- A Weird Western Tale
James Garnett is a gambler fallen on hard times. Just when it looks like he might be able to get back on his feet, bad luck comes to his table for one more hand. As the house of cards falls around him, though, Garnett realizes this is more than a mere game. It seems the sins of his past have finally pulled up a chair, and they're going to call his bluff.
