LA FRAMBOISE ISLAND in PIERRE, SD is home to a beautiful cottonwood forest which has been present since before the LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION. Currently, this forest in the heart of a vast prairie is dying as a result of the damming of the MISSOURI RIVER, and is being replaced by a lush juniper forest. One day, these big strong trees will all be gone, with a new forest growing in their place. Union Pacific 844 was built in December 1944 and was operated in revenue service until 1959. She was the last steam locomotive built for the Union Pacific Railroad. Designed for passenger service, 844 headed up express trains along Union Pacific's mainline until diesels began to take root in 1957. She continued her useful life with fast freights in Nebraska until 1959, when she was placed in storage. Unlike her sisters, 844 was never retired and was rebuilt in 1960. While she has not had an excursion run since 2019, 844 continues to be the face of Union Pacific's Heritage Fleet, earning the nickname "The Living Legend" from railfans. Southern Pacific 4449 was built in May 1944 and was operated until 1956, when she was placed in storage. During her service life, 4449 was assigned to the Coast Daylight express passenger train, and led many of Southern Pacific’s other named trains. She was kept as a backup locomotive from September 1956 to October 1957. In 1958, 4449 was donated to the City of Portland, Oregon, and was place on static display until 1974. 4449 was brought back to life for the 1976 American Freedom Train as part of America’s Bicentennial celebration. 4449 is currently based out of Portland, Oregon and is maintained by the Friends of SP 4449. She is known by railfans as “The Daylight” or “The Queen of Steam” and continues to be one of the most popular steam engines in North America. On October 2nd, 2021, I drove 3 hours to see something I hadn't known existed 2-weeks before: The Prairie Village, Herman & Milwaukee Railroad. It was a long drive, but, by God, it was worth every second and more! In addition to being...well, you know...a train, the line was set in a beautiful location! The people were friendly and I had a lovely time! They've closed for the season, but I highly recommend you make a trip out there if you can! Tickets were $2! $5 if you wanted a pumpkin!
