In today's video, I share the full story of how I got my ostomy at 16 - I mean all the gritty details! Some are able to have their stoma surgeries schedules, but mine occurred as emergency surgery after a failed intestinal resection and peritonitis. My surgeon saved my life with this ostomy, but it was only intended to be temporary. The first six months after surgery, I wanted nothing more than to have it reversed. This slowly changed as I felt myself finally feeling better!

Ostomy-Friendly Outfits for This Week! | #shorts | Let's Talk IBD
Watch the full video here: https://youtu.be/qYMx8uLxjGI
Today I decided to put some outfits together to give myself a little confidence boost. When you live with a stoma, it can be easy to fall into the habit of comfy sweatshirts and yoga pants (and NOTHING is wrong with that)! I tend to feel my best when I put myself together, so I found some ostomy friendly fashion. Let me know your thoughts on my first little summer outfit video!

IV Fluids for Ostomy-Related Dehydration! | #shorts | Let's Talk IBD
Watch the full video: https://youtu.be/7HTYIR5_B8w
IVs are a hit or miss - and today I tried to do everything I could think of to make its placement easy. When you're going in for ostomy related dehydration, it can make it harder for an intravenous catheter to be inserted. Even though it seems counterintuitive, I continue to drink electrolytes prior to ensure I am as hydrated as possible!

What I've Lost After Colon & Rectum Removal | Intimacy, Infertility, & Adhesions | Let's Talk IBD
Having your colon and rectum removed and your anus sewn shut (also known as panproctocolectomy or proctocolectomy surgery) is not an easy decision. It took me a decade from begging my surgeon to reverse my stoma to begging them to make it permanent! In this video, I reflect upon the things I have had to give up because of this surgery. Even with infertility, pain during intercourse, extensive pelvic floor therapy requirements, and scar tissue and adhesion build up, I am still glad I went through with it.

Embarrassed at Security with an Ostomy (but Blink 182 was AMAZING) | Let's Talk IBD
I had to bring you along today as we saw Blink 182, my favorite band! It was a great way to celebrate thirty years and I am already wanting to plan another trip to see them. Even though the day was fantastic, I had a little bit of an embarrassing moment having to explain my ostomy going through security. By the end of, I think everyone was aware of my situation. I wanted to share about that experience as well as I think its important to understand that not everyone wants their health on display, and that is sort of what it felt like.

If Your Pelvic Floor Pools, You'll Want to Know About This | Let's Talk IBD
After proctocolectomy surgery (removal of my colon & rectum), I experienced pooling of all fluids in my pelvic floor. My periods were all or nothing, and even regular cyclical discharge pooled and came gushing out with almost no warning. It was so much that I was tested for a rectovaginal fistula! Thankfully, I was found not to have one but rather had lost the support of my previous rectum. Since then, I've had to learn ways to manage, and I think I found one!

Anxious About Medical Procedures & Reaching a Health Goal I've Had for YEARS! | Let's Talk IBD
After the previous experience I had with getting an IV placement, I found myself a little nervous for this week's! It made me think of experiencing Crohn's as a child - it felt like I was always waiting for the next painful experience! Thankfully, this week's IV went well and I was able to receive IV fluids no problem.

Why I Haven't Gone Back to the Fertility Doctor - 2023 Update | Let's Talk IBD
As I tend to some plants, I thought I'd share with you why I have paused on trying to conceive. It has been awhile since I talked about it, but it still weighs heavily on my mind daily. It is a struggle wanting children while having a body that isn't in perfect condition to have them. I share a bit about the very short fertility appointment experience I had, and why for right now, we are content on where we are at.

You'll Regret It, But Its OK (Dealing with the Consequences of Our Health Mistakes) | Let's Talk IBD
I recently shared a video where I made a couple of health-related mistakes that really impacted how I was feeling. After sharing, I got so many comments telling me not to go too hard on myself (thank you so much)! I thought I could share some ways to manage the consequences of making these health mistakes. You will make them because we are all humans trying to just live our lives! We want to enjoy the day-to-day, and sometimes that means doing things we know aren't good for our chronic illnesses!

Making Myself Sick, Hair Growth, and Exciting Plans! | Let's Talk IBD
Today, I share about the two mistakes I made when it comes to taking care of myself. Unfortunately, it led to some severe nausea again and some crazy heartburn! You'd think I would learn my lesson, but I know I will make mistakes again in the future that will impact my health! I also share about my hair growth (see the link below if you're interested in what I'm using!) and some exciting plans for the summer. If you have an ostomy and are interested in meeting others with one, I highly recommend the UOAA (United Ostomy Association of America) Conference that is being held in Houston, TX!

Husband Calls Insurance for Me... and Fails! | Let's Talk IBD
My sweet husband Zak called our insurance to help figure out why Zofran was now costing me $130 more than previously! He was more frustrated with the situation then I was because he hasn't spent much time in the medical world. We still don't really have a clear picture as to what the issue is, but I am so thankful he tried for me! I know many, many patients understand this frustrated feeling so I figured I would share his experience with you guys!

Diagnosed with Shingles (Shingles Symptoms & Scars) | Let's Talk IBD
Today I am talking about my experience with Shingles from when I was just a child. Shingles symptoms are horrible, including a nasty rash with extreme pain. It was a struggle getting diagnosed with it because of my age, as its typically thought of as an older person's illness. Not so! If you are immunocompromised, like I am with my Crohn's disease medication, you can get it! Shingles happens after a round of chicken pox, which is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It stays dormant in your body until your immune system becomes compromised, and can reappear as Shingles!

Something I Hate About These Appointments... (A Visit to My GI Doctor for Crohn's) | Let's Talk IBD
I just had my follow up with my gastroenterologist to see how my Crohn's disease was doing! I share about our discussion, including results of previous endoscoscopies, ileoscopies, and MRI's. We talked about the potential of being tested for SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) and future scopes. Going into this appointment, I realized with my unique anatomy (don't miss you one bit colon), the pre-questionnaire really doesn't apply to me much. I wish it was a little bit more specific to each person' care. That would help me to prepare for these appointments better!
All I know is we were both thrilled about my weight gain and I am always happy that colonoscopies aren't part of my routine care anymore. :)

I Didn't Know Crohn's Could Do This! (Symptoms I've Had OUTSIDE of My Intestines) | Let's Talk IBD
Today I am talking about the ways Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, and other forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease can cause complications outside of the GI tract, called extraintestinal manifestations. I share a bit of my own history, including kidney issues in which I've required pyleoplasty surgery and ureter stents well as other issues that can be experienced like anemia, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, arthritis, Pyoderma Gangrenosum, and Erythema Nodosum! If you think Crohn's was bad enough, it likes to get other organ systems involved in its fun, so do not ignore any symptoms you may experience!

Being Immunocompromised Can Be SCARY | BNX KN95 Mask Eases My Fears: A Review | Let's Talk IBD

Being immunocompromised because of medications can make everyday life worrisome! I have been hospitalized from simple colds because my body picks up every bug and has a lot of trouble getting rid of them. That means heading to hospital and medical settings (where sick people tend to go) can be stressful - I always worry I'll pick another illness up! I take along to one of my trips to the hospital to receive IV fluids and show you my new masks that help protect me from unwanted illnesses!
