虎凭豺狼: Ravenous Tiger Takes You
If we look at this installment of Tiger Claw form, we see a number of techniques being used to accomplish the task. Unlike the previous week where we concentrated on short-hand strikes, this compilation has a broad variety of movements, from mid to long, striking, clawing and rapidly changing footwork.
The term "虎凭豺狼" is quite a unique term to translate into something easily understood in the English language. As we have said before, literal translation or interpretation of Kung Fu terminology and techniques can get you into a bit of trouble or totally lost all together. Broken down, the name of our technique loosely translates to, “The Tiger utilizes the jackal and wolf.” This means the techniques of the Tiger and/or Tiger Claw System of Kung Fu use the speed and ruthlessness of the jackal, the intelligence and cruelty of the wolf, as well as the power and ferocity of the Tiger. All these blend together to make for a ravenous, unstoppable combination of techniques!

猛虎下山: Tiger Chases You Down
The physical body is capable of many different feats of strength and dexterity, but many times the mental aspects are overlooked. In the Tiger Claw Kung Fu System that I teach (海幢寺黑虎門虎爪派) these two aspects of mind and body must be in balance and constantly complement one another. The mind is not only the seat of intelligence, logic, and reason, but also allows our imagination and intention to become alive and expressed through our physical action and technique. So, it stands to reason that all techniques of true Kung Fu and martial arts must stem from the mind of the practitioner. That is to say you must fully be able to visualize what you want to do and then make it happen.
Mentality is a large portion of getting anything done. In this video, we employ the mental imagery of the Tiger running down his prey as one would run down the opponent, not only using the techniques of the Tiger but also its indomitable ferocity. That never-give-up attitude coupled with powerful movements overwhelms and subdues the opponent.
The term 猛虎下山 literally translates to "Fierce Tiger Descends the Mountain." The Tiger comes down from the mountain for only one thing, to subdue his prey. This attitude is exemplified in this video.

虎錚連環: Continuous Tiger Elbow
The Tiger Claw Kung Fu System is extremely diverse in its approach and variety of techniques and strategies for fighting. Aside from the most obvious and common empty hand and foot techniques found in many systems, the Tiger Claw System utilizes a myriad of other techniques. These techniques range from long to medium to short. In the category of short techniques or in-fighting, one of the predominant techniques is the 虎爪錚 (Fu Jow Jiang) or Tiger Claw Elbow.
The Tiger Claw Elbow is unique in the sense that it can be used for simultaneous attack and defense no matter what the movement of the opponent is, and is short and fast which makes it very difficult to defend against. When bent, the elbow is one of the most powerful parts of the body and has a tremendous power focused in a very small area. The unique application of the Tiger Claw Elbow is its ability to trap the opponent’s technique, thereby breaking into his posture to crash him and break him open.

虎嘯驚風雲: Tiger's Roar Conjures the Storm
From ancient times, the tiger is recognized in China and all of Asia as a god, a protector, a good totem against evil, a king! This is shown by the stripes on his forehead, which form the character Wang (王), or King. In Chinese mythology and folklore, the tiger also represents the masculine principle in nature. Throughout Chinese history, the tiger has incited a sense of both awe and admiration: its prowess, its ferocity, its beauty, and the harmony of these opposites. The tiger is full of life and embodies the spirit and drive to achieve, to fight, to live, to be free, unfettered.
In this compilation video, we strive to present the intensity, the ferocity, the power, the grace and symmetry that embody the movements, techniques and fighting style of the Tiger Claw System. The versatility of the tiger’s movement enables the practitioner to transform, change and adapt to various attacks while being able to turn the tables on the opponent. Instead of taking a defensive posture, the Tiger Claw practitioner forces their attack to become the defender, and the tiger takes control. The tiger’s movement is as an explosive being detonated, a fuse being lit and exploding forward with thunderous power, like the storms that shake the mountains to their very core. The Tiger Claw Technique of fighting can manifest itself in all cardinal directions with the ability to adapt and change to all circumstances, which allows great variety of techniques and freedom to apply, long, short, fast, slow, hard and soft, all intertwined as one.
虎嘯驚風雲 This saying, “The tiger’s roar conjures a thunderous storm,” embodies the nature, spirit, attitude and indomitable fighting prowess of the tiger. The tiger is in the eye of the storm; he is the calm, he is the steady, he is the unmovable, the unshakeable. All around him is turbulence, chaos and unrest, but he never waivers. He is truth and freedom.

猛虎出洞: Fierce Tiger Emerges from the Cave
The "Fierce Tiger Emerges from the Cave" is a continual theme that runs through the mind of the Tiger Claw Kung Fu arsenal. It is not just a particular technique, as some may think, but also, if not more so, an overall mindset. Simple, direct and straightforward, the attacking speed and overall power of the Tiger is what we use in this week's set of techniques to overpower and defeat the opponent. We see the nature of the Tiger personified in all the techniques. All aspects of the body of the practitioner are being articulated to perform every action, fist, foot, finger, and body angles. Every tool in the arsenal of the practitioner is being utilized to its fullest, but the most important ingredient can be traced back to the name of the set that we are using this week: the ferocity of the tiger, which directly implies the mindset wherein which and how all the techniques are being applied. This ferocity, this overriding, indispensable attitude, is what galvanizes and sharpens the attack of the Tiger to overwhelm and ultimately neutralize and overpower. As a tidal wave overruns and washes away everything in its path, so does the ferocity of the Tiger when it is roused and emerges from its den, laying waste to all.

雷神虎爪: Tiger Claw Thunder God
There’s an old Chinese saying that reminds me very much of the technique I am demonstrating for you in this video: ”虎嘯山河.” When the Tiger roars, the mountains and rivers quake. This is the power of the Tiger and aptly describes the set in this video. The Tiger is known for its power and fighting prowess. This set is a versatile mixture of Tiger Claw techniques.
These techniques are unique in the sense that they really typify how a Tiger fights. A Tiger actually fights on his hind legs. He gets up on his hind legs, and he’s ready to pounce on you. You can see from the very first action, he captures you and tears you apart, traps you, drags you down and then throws you back out, and he’s on his hid legs the whole time. We’ve witnessed tigers in the jungle battling each other for supremacy, and they stand up and fight. This unique ability is displayed fully in this week's video. The roar of the Tiger is as a clap of thunder and a strike from a lightning bolt.
