Black Slaves, Black Masters
Ben Kinchlow teaches us some statistics about Black slave owners in New Orleans, then we learn about the largest Black slave owner in America.
In the book Runaway Slaves: Rebels on the Plantation by John Hope Franklin and Loren Schweninger, it's revealed John Carruthers Stanly was so cruel his slaves would run away.
The largest free black slaveholder in the South, John Carruthers Stanly of North Carolina, faced a number of problems in the 1820s in dealing with a slave labor force on his three turpentine plantations in Craven County. With a total of 163 slaves, Stanly was a harsh, profit-minded taskmaster, and his field hands would run away. Stanley dealt with this through his two white overseers and with a spy network that included a few trusted slaves. Brister, his slave barber in New Bern, was responsible for relaying to his owner rumors of planned escapes. On one occasion, Stanly proudly said that "thro the agency of the Negro Man Brister he has recd such information as has enabled him to apprehend one of his slaves which had run away and to prevent the absconding of others who had manifested an intention of deserting." Nor did Stanly have any pangs of conscience about selling children away from their parents or holding free blacks in bondage." In 1832 free black Kelly Davis, also called Kelso Mabeth. petitioned the Craven County Superior Court claiming that he was being illegally held by Stanly as a slave. The court concurred and ordered Davis's release.

Black racist beat Hispanic man to death
A man is dead and another is in custody after a brutal beating with a plank of wood.
Weijia Jiang reports the attack is the latest in a string of violent robberies in Southeast Baltimore and the targets are most often Hispanic.
Police say this is the fifth armed robbery of a Hispanic man in less than a month, and they are calling it a hate crime.
Spanish speaking officers are going door to door warning community members that without their help, the attacks will likely continue.
An overnight beating left a 51-year-old Hispanic man dead after he was struck with a two-by-two wooden plank multiple times over the head. It's the latest of brutal attacks targeting Hispanic men.
"Criminals may identify these victims as easy targets. They maybe looking at the fact that they carry lots of money, they know they don't contact police and it's an easy grab," said Anthony Guglielmi, Baltimore City Police spokesman.
Earlier this month, four Hispanic men were shot in separate incidents all within blocks of Patterson Park, an area highly populated with Hispanic residents.
The victim in an August 13 incident also died Saturday morning. The suspect is a 13-year-old girl.
The Neighborhood Association called an emergency meeting to warn neighbors of the violence. They handed out fliers printed in Spanish.
"This third attack just forced us to say ok let's meet at 5:00. They're sending extra officers; we're going to try to do door to door, and just walk the blocks and talk to people," said Heather Hurley, Neighborhood Association president.
Still police say the language barrier is a challenge, so is the fear of authorities that seems to be widespread.
"We're not in the immigration business. The Baltimore police department is not in the immigration business. We're not going to be checking immigration status. That's a federal issue. All we're here to do is prevent people from getting killed and hurt," said Guglielmi.
Police have arrested Jermaine Holley, 19, in the Friday night attack.
Officials say in a taped confession, Holley stated he hates Hispanics.
Police say Holley does have mental deficiencies and was not on his medication at the time of the beating.
They do not believe the same person or group of people is responsible for all these armed robberies.
Police are also reaching out to Spanish media outlets to spread the word.

Black on White hate crime conviction July 11, 2006
A guilty verdict for the man who confessed to killing a woman because she was white.
A homeless sex offender was convicted of murder as a hate crime on Tuesday in the stabbing death of a white woman near a downtown mall here last summer. He had told the police that he killed her because he wanted to start a race war.
After four hours of deliberations over two days, a jury in State Supreme Court found the defendant, Phillip Grant, 44, who is black, guilty of a racially motivated killing, which took place on June 29, 2005, at lunchtime in a parking garage near the Galleria mall.
The killing near the busy mall stunned people for its savagery and cast a harsh light on the way Westchester County dealt with its homeless population.
Mr. Grant was one of several high-level sex offenders who spent their nights sleeping at a county-run homeless shelter and their days roaming White Plains. The victim, Concetta Russo-Carriero, 56, a petite woman with green eyes and sandy blond hair, was stabbed as she walked through the garage on her way to her car.
About 2 p.m. in a packed courtroom in the Westchester County Courthouse, the jurors deciding Mr. Grant's fate -- seven white men, four white women and one black woman -- filed into the courtroom. None looked at the defendant.
Stocky and expressionless, Mr. Grant showed no emotion as the verdict was read. But he turned toward one of his lawyers and whispered something afterward.
As he was handcuffed and led out of the courtroom, Mr. Grant kept his head down and did not look at the gallery, where dozens of Ms. Russo-Carriero's relatives and former colleagues filled four rows of benches.
The jurors refused to speak with reporters as the courtroom emptied. They said nothing when approached by the victim's relatives and walked quickly away from the courthouse.
After the verdict, Ms. Russo-Carriero's parents and two grown sons spoke at a news conference, using language like ''beast,'' ''savage'' and ''vicious'' to describe Mr. Grant.
''When that animal stuck a knife in my daughter's heart,'' said the victim's father, Ted Granata, 83, as he sobbed and turned red with grief, ''he stuck it in our hearts too.''
Ms. Russo-Carriero's eldest son, Jonathan Russo, 29, choked back anger as he spoke.
''My mother was leaving work and did not deserve to come upon such a vicious animal as Phillip Grant, a remorseless human being,'' he said. ''He murdered my mother for no other reason than that she is white.''
Mr. Grant faces 20 years to life in state prison at his sentencing, scheduled for Sept. 11. As a hate crime, the murder charge carries the same maximum sentence but a higher minimum one.

Black Mom Defends Teen Son Charged With Hate Crime:'He's A Good Child'
2014 - Update: The hate crime charge has been dropped
.
The in-school attack happened Monday in Crystal Lake, and the eighth-grader was charged with two felonies.
On Wednesday, the family of the alleged attacker called to tell their side of the story, in this Original Report.
The young boy, who has not been identified because he is a juvenile, is a "good child," says his mother, Brenda.
CBS 2 agreed not to use her last name.
"I really can't take it because I know what kind of child his is," she said. "He's a good child."
Brenda is struggling with what is now her son's uncertain future.
He is in a juvenile detention center, after allegedly attacking 13-year-old Omid Babakhani, in a school hallway, breaking both of his collar bones.
Police and prosecutors reviewed details of the altercation and charged Brenda's son with felony hate crime and felony aggravated battery.
Brenda says the charges, especially the hate crime allegation, are unjustified.
"I don't think that was his intent. Really, I don't."
Omid said his attacker first swiped at his Middle Eastern ethnicity and then insulted his mother before slamming him to the ground.
Brenda said her son, who has no prior criminal record, claims the two students were just joking, until Omid turned at one point and said, "I will beat you."
"Then [my son] jumped on the boy's back, and the boy fell to the floor," Brenda said.
"Everything could have been handled in a better situation if there was an adult around. Someone to stop it before it happened."
Brenda said she believes the school needs more hall monitors.
The superintendent for the school district said the school has hallway monitors, but school officials are reviewing procedures to see whether there is need for improvement.
Brenda is also upset with police because she said her son was fingerprinted and questioned before she and the boy's father got to the station.
As for Omid, his parents on Wednesday said he will need surgery to put plates in both of his shoulders.

Black guy murders 2 White nuns in Mississippi, not a hate crime
2016 - But what if a White guy had murdered 2 Black nuns? Would their lives matter?
Sister Paula Merrill and Sister Held worked as nurse practitioners and dedicated their lives to serving others.
"We know that they were the most caring people and they would want to continue to reach out and care," said Rosemarie Rombalski, of School Sister St. Francis in Wisconsin. "They were so giving and accepting of people."
The two women helped less fortunate people get proper health care.
"Who's going to go to bat for these people?" said Jamie Sample, a friend of both victims. "They saw people that nobody would see because they don't have money and it would come out of their pockets from donations, family members. But they never turned anyone away."
Authorities arrested Rodney Earl Sanders for the killings. A motive for the murders is still not known.
"This is not religious. This is not a hate crime," Merrill's sister explained. "I'm positive it is fueled by something other than that or all the terrible things he lived through his life. I forgive him. I don't understand why he did it. I would like to know that."
People from all over the country came to honor their lives. A few out of town sisters came to the victim's home to bless their house.
"We wanted to go to the house just to be there and to bless that space from our perspective it's a holy ground and sacred ground," said Susan Gatz from Sister of Charity of Nazareth, Kentucky. "We wanted wonderful energy to be there."
A Memorial Mass will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of Saint Peter the Apostle in Jackson. Bishop Kopacz will be the principal celebrant.

Black guy charged with hate crimes for spray painting racial slurs on black churches
The N-word can be seen at 0:58 and 1:15.
Lafayette Police and the FBI are investigating another church vandalism in Lafayette. Similarities to the St. James Baptist Church vandalism only a couple weeks ago are making them ask if it's a hate crime. And now an arrest that has been made.
Lafayette Police investigators have arrested Brian Toriano Crimiel, 33, of Lafayette in connection with the vandalism of the St. James Baptist Church. Investigations are still going on for the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church that happened Saturday. Crimiel is being charged with hate crimes, criminal damage to property by defacing with graffiti, and obstruction of justice and communication of false information of planned arson.
They're still investigating what happened this morning before police responded to the 800 block of Surrey Street to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and school. In a very similar case from only a couple weeks ago, the church was painted with numerous derogatory words on the buildings in the complex and also left a threatening note. Church members say they're disgusted about what happened to their historic church, but will pray for the suspects.
Several members of the church showed up before mass to help in cleaning up the graffiti. And representative Rickey Hardy has offered a $500 reward leading to the arrest and indictment of the culprit who is responsible.

Black college student leader admits to tweeting fake threats against Blacks
2016 - Another hoax. The former leader of a black student group at Kean University tweeted anonymous threats against fellow black students last fall because she wanted more people to attend a rally on racial injustice, according to prosecutors.
Kayla McKelvey, 25, pleaded guilty Monday to creating a false public alarm. State prosecutors will recommend that McKelvey be sentenced to 90 days in jail and pay restitution of about $82,000 to cover the costs of the police response and heightened security at Kean after the threats.
According to prosecutors, McKelvey tweeted threats from a campus library because she wanted more people to attend the Nov. 17, 2015, rally on racial issues. She then returned to the rally to tell people about the threats.
One tweet addressed to campus police read: "@kupolice I will kill all the blacks tonight, tomorrow and any other day if they go to Kean University."
The university increased security and several law enforcement agencies were also alerted, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The threats also prompted a group of black ministers to call for Kean President Dawood Farahi to resign, saying the threats showed he hadn't done enough to address racial tension on campus.
McKelvey and her attorney had sought to have her participate in a pretrial intervention program that would have allowed her to avoid jail. But a judge denied that request last week.

You still got a lot of racism here. First thing they say is about your skin. They try and keep you down for things for years gone back like slavery days and all that kind of fooling. Stating we were the only boys that caused them to be slaves. They still try and keep you down.

A complex discussion about the real FBI hate crime statistics
2015 - Complex News presents a very simple narrative of a hate crime being when a White attacks a non-White. The real FBI hate crime statistics are a bit more complex.
MARTIN: The FBI reports that about 20 percent of hate crimes are committed by African-Americans. And does that mean anything, or does that information have some bearing on the this in some way?
Mr. POTOK: Well, the FBI statistics are notoriously shaky, through no fault of their own. It's a voluntary reporting system. The numbers are known to be extremely weak. That said, I think they are indicative of something. What the numbers show is, as you suggested, is almost 21 percent of hate crimes, according to FBI numbers, are committed by black Americans, who comprise about 13 percent of the population. About 58 percent are committed by whites, who makeup about 80 percent of the population.
So the FBI statistics do suggest that blacks commit hate crimes at a somewhat higher level than whites. And that is very possibly true. We really can't know that because the FBI stats are so incomplete.

100 activists call to stop Black on Latino hate crime violence in Peekskill, New York
2010 - More than 100 community activists gathered last night to pray for an Ecuadorian immigrant, still in critical condition after a brutal beating last week, and to look for ways to stop similar acts of violence in the city.
Surveillance video captured part of the horrific attack on Julio Serrano, who was beaten by four men in what is being investigated as a hate crime.
"My goal here is to say we cannot accept behavior like that," says community activist Norma Pereria-Mora.
Peekskill Mayor Mary Foster says there's no sure solution to the problem, but is hopeful that meetings like the one held last night are a good first step.
"We want the Latino community to feel welcome. We want the African-Americam community to feel welcoming of the Hispanic community. We want all communities really functioning well together."
Four men, Ronnie Juett, Jarron Sligh, Keith Walker and Jamar Walker, have been charged with gang assault.

90% of white ppl are nasty #HATE THEM
The murder of an Australian college student in Duncan, Oklahoma is raising questions about why the three young men accused of the crime are not facing federal hate crime charges.
Court documents list James Edwards Jr., 15, and Chancey Luna, 16 as black. Both teenagers are charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of Christopher Lane. Lane was white.
Investigators say the teenagers, along with Michael Jones, 18, were all involved in the shooting. Duncan police Chief Danny Ford said Jones told police, "We were bored and we wanted something to do and he was our target and we wanted to kill somebody."
Earlier this year Edwards tweeted, "90% of white ppl are nasty. #HATE THEM."
That tweet was followed by one in July referencing the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial. "Ayeee I knocced out 5 woods since Zimmerman court!:) lol sh** ima keep sleepin sh**! #ayeeee."
The word "woods" is described online as sometimes used as a derogatory word for white people.
The social media sites for Edwards and Luna include references to gangs, drugs and other racially charged posts.
Conservative news sites have asked why the tweets and posts are not being considered to turn this case into a federal hate-crime. Many conservative groups have questioned whether the case is receiving the national outrage that came during the Zimmerman trial following the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. and the Rainbow Push Coalition released a statement on Lane's death and say the violence in the black community "disproportionately affects every facet of black life in America."
The statement goes on to say, "We must learn to live together in peace or we will most assuredly die apart in our own neglect."
A White House spokesman said Wednesday he was not familiar with the Lane shooting. The President did make public statements following the death of Martin and the not-guilty verdict in the Zimmerman trial. The spokesman did say President Obama, while not weighing in on this particular case, has spoken about the impact of violence across the country.
"It's much easier to talk about something being a hate crime than it is to actually go to court and prove that beyond a reasonable doubt," said Former US Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma Robert McCampbell.
McCampbell told Fox 25 Stephens County District Attorney Jason Hicks has chosen the correct trial strategy and doesn't need to pursue a hate crime case. "To prove a hate crime, you have to prove not only was it a murder but that it was a racially motivated murder," McCampbell said.
That still leaves a question about what to do with tweets that show Edwards telling the world his views on white people?
"That doesn't tell you anything about the other two defendants and it doesn't tell you anything about the day of this particular crime," McCampbell said.
During his time as a federal prosecutor McCampbell said he never filed hate crime charges, though there were cases where it was considered. He said choosing to pursue cases as hate crimes adds a burden of proof that risks losing the entire case.
"You concentrate on the crime in front of you and you prove that crime and there's no need to take on that extra burden of proving it was racially motivated," McCampbell told Fox 25.
McCampbell says just because the suspects are black and the victim was white is not enough to risk the case by adding a racial component to trial.
In this case, investigators are working to connect the teenagers to the murder, but have yet to recover the murder weapon. Police have said one teenager has confessed details of the crime. Jones, while still facing life in prison, is charged with lesser crimes. McCampbell said it is not uncommon for prosecutors to show leniency on cooperating witnesses.
McCampbell said police must work to corroborate Jones' statements to make his testimony more reliable for a jury.

32 gangbangers arrested in hate crime roundup for targeting Whites and Latinos
https://www.denverpost.com/2009/11/21/denver-arrests-may-be-part-of-trend-of-gangs-videotaping-attacks/
21 nov 2009
A massive 24-hour roundup Thursday led to the arrest of 32 suspects accused of violent, random and racially-motivated attacks in downtown Denver over the past four months.
Denver police say they are still looking for three suspects, one is a juvenile.
They say the majority of the group are gang members from either Rolling 60 Crips or Black Gangster Disciples. They are all black.
Police say the suspects targeted only white or Hispanic people to beat up and/or rob. Twenty-eight victims were men. And three were women who were with the male victims.
"Without warning, the suspects would attack the victim, usually with a punch to the head, with the intent of knocking him unconscious. Other suspects would then join the assault. And in some instances, rob the victims of their personal items--cash, wallets, credit cards, cell phones, iPods, etc.," says Denver Police Chief Gerald Whitman.
They allegedly committed 26 crimes from July 17 through Nov. 17 -- often in the early morning hours.
Surveillance video released in September shows an attack on one young man. It's one of, at least, seven unreported crimes police want to talk about with victims and witnesses to help bolster their cases even further.
"You have lot of activity downtown. People think it's a street fight. They don't realize it's a pattern of these crimes and we may need them as a witness," he says.
Police say the group worked together to make money from their victim's property. Their investigation showing they were organized and deliberate.
"As far as a mastermind, who was going out and saying 'Go do this, do that,' our investigation does not reflect that. But it does reflect an organization where a loose confederation of individuals were involved with this," says Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey.
Police are still looking for Allen Ford, 18 and Torrence McCall, 26, along with one juvenile who police aren't identifying.
The 35 suspects face multiple felonies including: aggravated assault, aggravated robbery and bias motivated crime. They are each being held on $1-million bond per count.

5th Black on Latino hate crime attack on Staten Island in 2 months
Black racism https://www.silive.com/northshore/2010/04/cops_eye_port_richmond_attacks.html
A Staten Island man remains hospitalized after he was beaten in an attack that his family says was racially motivated.
The 18-year-old victim's father says his son walked out of a convenience store in Mariners Harbor Wednesday night and was attacked by three black men who punched him in the face.
He remains in critical condition at the hospital.
Police are not investigating the incident as a hate crime, because a friend of the victim said the attack came after a dispute, and does not appear to be racially motivated.
But the victim's father, who did not want to be identified, disagrees.
"You think this is a hate crime? I do think so. I do," said the father. "A lot of people in Port Richmond, New Brighton, West Brighton, everywhere, it's Latinos getting hit."
The attack came just hours before a 52-year-old Mexican immigrant was beaten in nearby Port Richmond by three men who yelled racial slurs.
That incident is being investigated as a hate crime.
While the family believes the suspects are the same, police are not linking the two attacks.

5 Black teens beat Chinese restaurant owner to death with bricks 09⧸06⧸2000
The murder was brutal. Police say late Friday night, five teens ordered Chinese food, then ambushed the 44-year-old immigrant who made the delivery. Jin-Sheng Liu was beaten to death with bricks for the food he was carrying.
"One of the subjects held him down, another put a bedsheet over his head and others beat and punched him and used bricks in the attack. Then one of the bags of Chinese food was taken and eaten by the perpetrators," says NYPD Chief Deputy Patrick Timlin.
The medical examiners office says an autopsy concluded Liu died from multiple blunt impact injuries to his face, scalp and torso. Investigators recovered bricks at the scene which they believe were used to murder Liu.
On Tuesday, police arrested Stacy Royster, 17, Darryl Tyson, 17, Jamel Murphy, 17, James Stone, 16, and Robert Savage, who is 14.
"It leaves all of us shaking our heads. Why they would do this?" asks Queens District Attorney Richard Brown. "They ordered Chinese food earlier and they wanted more, and they apparently didn't have enough money."
On Wednesday, The Golden Wok restaurant, which Liu owned, was closed. He leaves behind a wife and two teenage children.
Other immigrants who also operate businesses on the same street are still shocked, but say crime is a reality of doing business in their neighborhood. Others hope those who are responsible will be punished for their crime.
All five teenagers have been charged with multiple counts of second degree murder, as well as robbery and criminal possession of a weapon. If convicted, they face a maximum of 25 years to life in prison, with the exception of the 14-year-old, who as a juvenile would face a maximum of nine years to life in prison.
