On Today's Show:
Now that we're on the other side of 250, we bring you back to our usual format. Actually, before I go on I should say that I'm so thankful for every one of you who tuned in to our live brew day last week and I was overwhelmed by the positive feedback! A ton of you also asked if we'd do more live brew days so I managed to twist Todd's arm into supporting that idea. Stay tuned for more details!
Todd and James joined me this week to take on 4 great questions. First, we have a listener who is going to mimic the set up we all use (1 immersion chiller in the wort and one in an ice-bath of it's own) but he wants to know if he should also put his boil kettle in an ice-bath.
Then, our next question was from a listener who was gifted a mash & boil electric all-in-one and he wants to know if he should or shouldn't sparge. Spoiler: we all sparge even on all-in-one brew days but we go over why you *should* and what you can do if you'd prefer to NOT sparge.
After that, we take a question from a listener who needs help harvesting yeast from his fermenter. What all needs to be saved and what is just trub?
Then we wrap up the episode with a question about upping the ABV of a beer AFTER its' primary fermentation is complete. Can this be done and how can it be done, if possible?
We want to hear from you!
If you have a question that you’d like us to discuss on a future episode, please click on the “Submit a Question” link at the top of our website or you can now call in your questions via our questions hotline @ 325-305-6107 and leave your message after the beep. This is a friendly reminder that, if we choose your question for a future episode, we give you a $25 gift card to that episode's sponsor!
Let us know what you think and enjoy the show!

CMBecker vs Perlick flow control, diacetyl rest, dealing with evaporation, & crispy pils - Ep 249

On Today's Show:
19:20 - I had a blast on this week's show as Todd and James both joined me to tackle your questions. We started off the show with a question about Perlick flow control faucets and why they aren't "full" flow control. As Todd called them, "flow control light" might be the better phrase. Learn more about why CMBecker flow controls are your best solution for proper restriction flow control.
29:46 - Next, we have a listener interested in learning more about what a diacetyl rest is and when you need to do one. Specifically - are you utilizing a diacetyl rest for hybrid beers like kolsch?
36:41 - After that, we address a question regarding when to compensate water volume: pre-boil or post-boil. There are a lot of factors that may change how/when you do it but I think we addressed most cases.
44:04 - Then we wrap up this week's episode with a question about brewing crispy pilsners. What's the most crucial part of the brew day to achieve crispiness? Tune in to find out!

Todd and James join me to take on YOUR homebrewing questions which included -
A listener wanted to know what he might be doing wrong because he's 12 brew days into the craft and hasn't been happy with the head retention every beer has had. We give our opinions on what might be causing it and a bunch of options for troubleshooting and resolving!
Another listener is upgrading from buckets and wants a conical fermenter. Even though he's only brewing 5 gallon batches (for now), will using a conical made for larger volumes (10 or 15 gallon batches) be an issue while he's still brewing 5 gallon batches?
Next, we took a question about kettle insulation after a listener saw an ad for one. Why would you use insulation on a kettle?
Then we end this week's show with a question about "fixing" a stout that finished WAY too dry. First off - Todd says that there is no such thing as TOO dry. What do you think?

Secondary fermentation time, do I need a wort chiller, infected keg, & rehydrating yeast - Ep.247

On Today's Show:
Todd and James join me to take on YOUR homebrewing questions which included -
One listener wrote in about secondary fermentation time and is it necessary to let the beer sit up to 4 weeks?
Also, another member of our community emailed me asking if using a wort chiller is "necessary" during brew day and if he can get by without using one. This was a tricky question with a lot of factors in our answers but I think we covered it good.
After that, we took a question regarding an "infected" keg. The listener who wrote in has been having issues with beer having off flavors in this one specific keg he's serving them out of. Bad brew days or an 'infected' keg?
Then, we wrap up this week's episode with a question about rehydrating dry yeast versus sprinkling it on top of our wort.

On Today's Show:
Don't call it a comeback but all three of us are finally back on the show together! Just in time too because Todd and James are about to be heading out and flying into Denver for the 2021 Craft Brewers Conference. I don't want to talk about why I'm not going with them. :|
On the show this week we did have a great time. Our first question was about the hop testing pale ale I brewed and the specialty grains that I had forgotten to add to it.
Next, a listener asked us about what type of milling he should do to his grains if he's brewing on an Anvil Foundry.
After that, we took a question about filtering your wort in between the kettle (during your brew day!) and whatever device you're using as a fermentation vessel.
We then wrapped up this week's show with a question about dispensing from a keg that is lying on its' side. Good idea or terrible idea?

On Today's Show:
Sorry about taking last week off! I was actually out sick and I'm still recovering from it but I'm 'normal' enough to crank out a new episode for y'all and I'm thankful that Todd was able to join me as well. In this week's episode, we help a listener who is brewing off-site and wants to take their portion of a batch home with them immediately after brewing so they're curious if anything might get 'messed up' in transit.
Then, we take a question from a new brewer who wants some advice on taking hydrometer readings. Should the test tube be only clear liquid or is it OK if some floaties make their way into the tube?
After that, we have a listener write in who is looking to switch to electric brewing but they want to know how often they should expect to calibrate the temperature controllers on an e-brewing system.
Finally, we wrap up with a question from someone who accidentally transferred beer into a clean but unsanitized keg. Is his batch going to get infected or is he over thinking it?

Brautag is German for “Brew Day” and this is the perfect system for you to brew your best beer yet! HERMS stands for Heat Exchange Recirculating Mash System. This is our favorite style of brewing system because it uses indirect heat to warm up your mash. This eliminates issues with scorched grain and gives its user very consistent brewing temperatures. The Brautag has three 20 gallon kettles and is the perfect size for 15 gallon batches.
The Brautag is a collaboration between the team behind the Homebrew Happy Hour podcast - and it has been a labor of love! This system was developed from the ground up and is the result of several years of building HERMS systems and brewing on them. The goal with this system is to allow someone to get it set up and brewing quickly and easily. The Brautag has been designed to be easy to brew on and this has been achieved by using very intuitive controllers coupled with videos and written documentation. For detailed information on this system please visit www.brautag.com

SMaSH recipe hops, filling bottles, brewing consistent beer, swollen packs of liquid yeast - Ep.242
Hope you're doing well, homebrewer!
We welcome you back for another episode of our Homebrew Happy Hour podcast...the podcast where we answer all of your home brewing questions and discuss anything related to craft beer!
A SUBTLE REMINDER:
If you appreciate the things we do here at Homebrew Happy Hour, consider joining our Trub Club! Not only will you be supporting our efforts, but you'll also receive exclusive perks such as HUGE discounts on HomebrewSupply.com and Kegconnection.com, welcome packs with our merch, discounts to BrewersFriend.com, and lots more! On Today's Show:
We start off the show with a question about selecting hops when developing a single hop and single mash (SMaSH) recipe. Thankfully, we have hop head Ladik Joe Ermis on the show with us this week and he was a huge help on this question. Shop fresh hops for your next batch here: https://www.kegconnection.com/hops/
Then, we had a question about filling bottles (gross, amirite?) and whether or not you should leave plenty of head space or if you can fill the bottle all the way up to the top. For bottling supplies, click here: https://www.kegconnection.com/bottle-filler/
Our third question was an interesting one because the listener initially brewed a batch of the award winning Brian's Kolsch recipe kit - enjoyed it so much - then he bought a second recipe kit and brewed it the exact same way only to have slightly different results. His second batch was sweeter than his first and we try to help him figure out 'why'. Brew the incredible Brian's Kolsch recipe kit yourself: https://www.kegconnection.com/brians-kolsch-kolsch-cup-2021-grand-champion-recipe/
Finally, our fourth and final question on this week's episode came from a listener who is a member of our Trub Club (https://www.patreon.com/HomebrewHappyHour) and receives recipe kits every month. During these Summer months, his pack of Imperial Yeast arrived slightly swollen and he isn't sure whether he should pitch it as is or if he should create a starter for his batch. Shop Imperial Yeast here: https://www.kegconnection.com/imperial-yeast/

Dip tube dilemma, liquid line length, travelling with kegs, & some of our brew day mistakes - Ep.241
Hi, friend!
Thank you for joining us and yet another fun-filled episode of our Homebrew Happy Hour podcast...the podcast where we answer all of your home brewing questions and discuss anything related to craft beer!
A SUBTLE REMINDER:

On Today's Show:
Even though James is at the beach, he still made it a point to drop in and check on us to make sure we could do this week's episode. What a guy!
Our first question was about dip tube lengths in a homebrew keg and whether or not it matters that the gas dip tube is just as long as the liquid side (which basically touches the bottom of the keg). Check out homebrew kegs, dip tubes, and other accessories here: https://www.kegconnection.com/homebrew-kegs/
The next question came from a listener who wants to know if there is a formula to follow that will ensure the proper length of liquid tubing in his kegerator system. This is the most Todd question I could've included on the show so you can trust that he thoroughly answered this. For liquid tubing, visit here: https://www.kegconnection.com/beer-hose/
After that, we discussed a question submitted by a community member who is travelling on vacation and wants to take his homebrew keg of beer with him. We get this question a lot and it's good to remind people the helpful tips we have for taking your beer on the go! For a great draft kit solution, check this out: https://www.kegconnection.com/draft-beer-at-home-and-on-the-go-deluxe-kegerator-kit/
We wrapped up this week's show with a question about our biggest brew day mistakes that still resulted in decent beer. Believe it or not, we're no strangers to making mistakes (even during our brew days!) so we had a lot of fun with this question. For the freshest ingredients please visit here: https://www.kegconnection.com/ingredients

Taste Testing 7 batches of Pale Ale using ALL of the Hang'em High Hops pellets!
Hey there, home brewer! We’re happy to have you join us for this “special” video segment we recorded after brewing SEVEN (7) batches of the same pale ale base recipe but using a different Hang’em High Hops pellet in each batch for our aroma hops.
The batches we brewed included the following hops
Michigan Copper: https://homebrewsupply.com/michigan-copper-hop-pellets-1oz/
Bergamot: https://homebrewsupply.com/bergamot-hop-pellets-1oz/
Gemini: https://homebrewsupply.com/gemini-hop-pellets-1-oz/
Paradigm: https://homebrewsupply.com/paradigm-hop-pellets-1-oz/
Emerald Spire: https://homebrewsupply.com/emerald-spire-hop-pellets-1oz/
Hydra: https://homebrewsupply.com/hydra-hop-pellets-1-oz/
and Mackinac (which isn’t available for sale YET)
I’m also working on getting the base recipe we used (developed by our BrewersFriend.com friend, the incredible Lorena Evans) turned into a linkable PDF so I’ll replace this blurb with that link as soon as it’s available.
We’d love to hear from you! What styles should we brew with these hops? What should we taste test for future videos?
Let us know in the comments below.

CMB disconnect maintenance, keg quality differences, weevil in my grain, & scaling recipes - Ep 240
Howdy, homebrewer!
We are happy for you to join us for yet another fun-filled episode of our Homebrew Happy Hour podcast...the #podcast where we answer all of your home brewing questions and discuss anything related to craft beer!
A SUBTLE REMINDER:

On Today's Show:
Our first question for this week's show asked if there is any recommended or required maintenance for our popular CMB disconnects. Thankfully, we have Mr. CMBecker himself - James Carlson - on our show and he was able to thoroughly answer this for our listener, Phil. If you're interested in using the best disconnects on the market, check them out here: https://www.kegconnection.com/disconnects/
Next, we help out John who wanted to know more about the different "grades" of kegs that we personally use and if it's "worth" spending the little bit of extra money on buying new kegs versus used/refurbished kegs. To shop top quality new and used kegs, visit here: https://www.kegconnection.com/homebrew-kegs/
After that, our third question for this week's show came from a member of our community who wanted to know if the presence of a weevil in his grain bag (he reassured us that he didn't get his grains from us, lol) meant that the grains are now unusable. You might be surprised by our answer! Shop the highest quality grains here: https://www.kegconnection.com/brewing-grains/
Then we wrapped up this week's show with a question from our buddy Rob who wanted to know about scaling recipes. We hope we demystified it a little for you because it really can be as easy as using an awesome tool like Brewer's Friend to do it for you OR you can buy multiple quantities of your favorite recipe kits to bring up the volume (if you want 15 gallon batch of your favorite 5 gallon recipe kit, buy 3 of those kits!). Shop the best award winning recipe kits here: https://www.kegconnection.com/beer-recipe-kits/

DIY false bottoms, fruity notes in kolsch, deodorized brewing, & insulating beer lines - Ep 239
Great to have you back, homebrewer!
We're so excited for you to join us for yet another fun-filled episode of our Homebrew Happy Hour #podcast ...the podcast where we answer all of your home brewing questions and discuss anything related to craft beer!

On Today's Show:
We take a question from a listener who is ready to start allgrain brewing and wants to know which false bottom to get OR if they should just make their own. We recommended this one (it's usually low in stock and gets sold as soon as we stock them!): https://homebrewsupply.com/stainless-steel-domed-false-bottom-12/
Then, we discuss a question submitted that asked why fruity notes might appear in a kolsch but not until weeks after kegging it. Having some subtle fruity notes in your kolsch is super normal but James had some ideas on how to minimize it if that's not a desired flavor you're going for. The kolsch kit mentioned in this question is: https://www.kegconnection.com/brians-kolsch-kolsch-cup-2021-grand-champion-recipe/
Then, we get a funny question from a guy who loves to brew but his girlfriend can't stand the smell. While we can't relate to that, we did our best to offer some good (and some truly awful) advice for our friend.
We wrapped up this week's show with a question about keeping beer lines as cool as possible, specifically in a tower installation scenario. Todd had some solid advice and also mentioned utilizing this: https://www.kegconnection.com/beer-tower-cooler-kit/
We want to hear from you!

LHBS closing, using mystery hops, good H2O vs temp control, & commercial kegs for homebrew - Ep 238
We hope you’re doing well, homebrewer!
We’re so excited to have you back for another fun-filled episode of our Homebrew Happy Hour podcast… the podcast where we answer all of your home brewing questions and discuss anything related to craft beer!

On Today’s Show:
We start our show with a question from a listener who’s local homebrew supply shop, unfortunately, had to close their doors and he wants to know what to look for when ordering from an online retailer. Spoiler alert: we’re very biased about Kegconnection.com and HomebrewSupply.com!
Then, we discuss what we might do if we found ourselves in the same position as a community member who was given a large amount of “mystery” hops. He has no idea how to identify them and he doesn’t want them to go to waste. What would you do in his situation?
After that, we took a question that posed an odd scenario: if you had to choose between having “good” water versus having temperature controlled fermentation – which would you choose?
Finally, we wrap up this week’s show with a text message submission asking about using sanke kegs instead of corny kegs for kegging homebrewed beer.
We want to hear from you!

Airlock activity, using gelatin, immersion vs counterflow, dry vs liquid yeast for starters - Ep 237

On Today's Show:
We discuss how to know when your fermenting beer is done (and what exactly activity in your airlock means). Then we take a question about using gelatin for clarity in your beer and when is the best time to add it (in the fermenter vs in the keg). Our third question is about immersion chillers compared to counterflow chillers and which might be best in various scenarios. Finally, we wrap up the show with a question from a community member who isn't sure whether dry yeast or liquid yeast is better for making starters with (or if it even matters at all).
We want to hear from you!

Todd and James were nice enough to join me to take your questions because Lord knows I can't do this show on my own! Specifically, I get called out for still having breakfast stout on tap (don't judge me - I'm trying to make it last!). We also talk about what size kettle you should have if you're trying to brew specific gallon amounts of beer. Then, we talk about the need (or lack thereof) to replace heating elements on your electric brewing system. We close our the Q&A section with a listener who received a Blichmann Beer Gun and wants to know if he should use it for filling his growlers as well as bottles.
We want to hear from you!
If you have a question that you’d like us to discuss on a future episode, please click on the “Submit a Question” link at the top of our website or you can now call in your questions via our questions hotline @ 325-305-6107 and leave your message after the beep. I know I said "Happy HomebrewCon" at the top, even though this is NOT our HomebrewCon presentation, but I mentioned it because HomebrewCon is going on RIGHT NOW as you're reading this... or, if you're late to this episode, it already happened and we probably had a blast and totally didn't mess up our presentation or do a bad job at all, right?!
If you don't know what HomebrewCon is, the best way to describe it is "an awesome 3 days of informational seminars, fun hang outs, and growing as a homebrewer". Go over the HomebrewCon.org right now and sign up to join the fun.

-------------------------------------------------------------
What's Included:
3 premium stianless steel Brautag 20 gallon kettles with durable ball valves and easy to use stainless steel quick connects - It makes swapping hoses around a breeze!
Hot Liquor Tank (HLT) is fitted with a 50' half inch stainless steel recirculating HERMS coil for the most effective form of heat exchange.
Mash Tun comes with two premium quick connect attachments for sparging and a durable false bottom to ensure clear recirculation for your mash and sparge.
Boil kettle is fitted with premium components such as the tri-clamp fitted immersive heating element (which makes it easy to remove for cleaning or replacement) and stainless steel valves with quick connects.
The Brautag controller is an innovative no-nonsense controller developed to make your brew day better. It's easy to understand which makes it easier for you to fully control the brewing process. Dial in your temperatures with ease and control the entire process at the flick of a switch or push of a button.

Todd and James join me this week to tackle your awesome homebrewing questions. We recorded from the brew room at HQ because James was having a brew day on our new Brautag system! It's now available at Kegconnection.com (CLICK HERE) and we couldn't be more excited. Also - we still have 4 passes to HomebrewCon Online to giveaway and you can enter for your chance to win by clicking HERE. Drawing will be on Monday, June 14th.
Also - if you're listening to this episode and wondering "I follow them on Instagram and I didn't see anything about blending beers this week" it's because Todd and I drank too much before we remembered that we didn't blend any beers last night. We'll get to it another time, especially since I'll be up at HQ ALL NEXT WEEK as we prepare for our HomebrewCon Online 2021 seminar on brewing on a HERMS system.

It's been a while so I am super stoked to welcome back Homebrew Supply's Director of Operations, Mr. Ladik Joe Ermis! Joe is an incredibly under-utilized resource, mainly because he's SO BUSY managing the day-to-day production operations for Kegconnection LLC. I begged him for an hour of his time and, lucky for all of us, he was able to join me this week and tackle your questions.

I gave Todd and James a break since Todd is out of town for a medical procedure and James works so hard - they both deserved the week off. However, I was thrilled to welcome my friends Tyler & Laurie from the Brew'd Up podcast on the show. We've had Tyler on before and it was great catching up with her as well as meeting Laurie and learning more about what they're brewing, how they're brewing it, and all about their podcast.
