Tripletail are a peculiar species of fish that lead lives that are mostly hidden from people. They are usually only seen when they are attracted to floating objects or fixed structures. They can be found from inside bays and coastal rivers, to many hundreds of miles offshore in the ocean. They are often seen around floating debris where they feed on smaller fish and crustaceans that seek refuge in the deep waters. Triple tail are a bit odd looking, yet they pack a powerful punch when hooked. They are known for exciting drag screaming runs and even jump out of the water acrobatically like a snook or tarpon. Last but not least, they are absolutely delicious eating! In this episode we first scour the crap trap lines off Long Boat Key and Anna Maria Island for our intended target, the Tripletail. After that, we head back inside Tampa Bay to chum up some snook and redfish using live whitebait, aka Scaled Sardines. We focused on fishing around large mullet schools that were densely packed and very active. Once the bite started it didn't stop until we left! Crystal River Florida is a place that captures the imagination. When it comes to inshore fishing for redfish, trout, and snook, you could hardly do better than Crystal River. I've been wanting to checkout this fishery for years, as I've heard so much about it. It definitely lived up to the hype. There were fish everywhere in this winding network or sawgrass salt marsh patches and mangrove tangled islands. Oyster bars were numerous and the water was beautiful and clean in most of the area. This adventure required a lot of local knowledge. I was referred by a friend to Crystal River Fishing Adventures operated by Captain Jeremiah Carlucci. Captain Jeremiah is a true native to the area and has been fishing these waters recreationally and commercially his whole life. His local knowledge really shines when you go on a charter with him. Friendly and positive, Captain Carlucci will definitely put you on the spot to catch the fish. Without a local guide, a newbie will be at SEVERE risk of ruining their boat trying to navigate the ultra shallow waters that are dotted with numerous rock piles and oyster bars. This is not the place to run through as a first timer. You NEED a guide. In this adventure we used two different tactics to target trout and redfish. First we used artificial baits like jerkbaits and topwater lures. Then we switched to live bait on the bottom in shallow water. The redfish couldn't resist a good mud minnow or pinfish on a jighead. Once the redfish schools arrived on the incoming tide it was game over for them!
