It was one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. Nicole Hockley, whose 6-year-old son Dylan was killed at Sandy Hook Elementary school in 2012. I too, am a relative of a family member, murdered at the end of a handgun. I was 7 years old when I lost my uncle. The Hell's Angels of Minnesota put a hit out on him. He was a South Saint Paul Narcotics Detective. They shot him in the face in his own bed, using a suppressor, and my aunt woke up to a dead husband. My mother, lost her Brother. It was a closed casket funeral. Yet, I didn't blame the gun. I blamed the heart of the man who did the killing. The Virginia Tech shooting was a spree shooting that occurred on April 16, 2007, comprising two attacks on the campus of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, United States. Seung-Hui Cho, an undergraduate student at the university and a U.S. resident of South Korean descent, killed 32 people and wounded 17 others with two semi-automatic pistols. On August 1, 1966, after stabbing his mother and his wife to death the night before, Charles Whitman, a former Marine, took rifles and other weapons to the observation deck atop the Main Building tower at the University of Texas at Austin, then opened fire indiscriminately on people on the surrounding campus and streets. Over the next 96 minutes he shot and killed 15 people, including an unborn child and one final victim who died from his injuries in 2001. Whitman also injured 31 others. The incident ended when a policeman and a civilian reached Whitman and shot him dead. Fans sent scurrying after a triple shooting outside Nats Park during a game | Police search for vehicle of interest Police said two cars involved in a shootout caused the incident, which also injured a woman who had attended the game and was outside the stadium when she was shot. WASHINGTON — Three people were shot outside Nationals Park during Saturday's game against the San Diego Padres, DC Police said. Officials said one of the victims was a woman who had been attending the game and was caught in the crossfire of two vehicles involved in a shootout. The shooting happened in the 1500 block of South Capitol Street, Southwest, with one car pulling up beside another and "engaging in gunfire," police said. The cars sped down South Capitol Street, Executive Assistant Chief of Police Ashan Benedict said. One car was stopped by police, and two suspects from the car are receiving treatment for injuries at a hospital in the area, and being interviewed by police. Benedict described the suspects as "known by law enforcement." Police are still looking for the second car involved in the shooting and describe it as a gray Toyota Corolla with a missing hubcap on the rear driver’s side wheel and dark tinted windows. It is thought to currently display a Virginia temporary tag. Anyone with information should call police at (202) 727-9099 or text your tip to the Department's tip line at 50411. Police are currently offering a reward of up to $10,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for a violent crime committed in D.C. The woman who had been attending the game is expected to recover from her injuries, according to Benedict. Initially, DC Police tweeted that there were four people they thought were wounded in the shooting but later updated that number to only three injured by gunfire. New York-based psychiatrist Aruna Khilanani, who earned massive outrage over her 'shoot Whites' lecture at Yale University, was bombarded with embarrassing 1-star ratings. Khilanani came under fire after she claimed she had fantasized about “unloading a revolver into the head of any White person that got in my way”. The backlash saw Twitter calling for Khilanani to be "fired from Yale" although she isn't technically affiliated with the university. But a quick Google search on the doctor reveals that her Manhattan-based private practice has now been "permanently closed", as of June 8. Well, lady! You reap what you sow! News of this comes just a day after it was reported that Khilanani had given her own statement on the collective outrage against her, claiming that her words were taken out of context from the lecture to "control the narrative". As reported by The New York Times on Saturday, June 5, the forensic psychiatrist and psychoanalyst said in a mail that her lecture “used provocation as a tool for real engagement”. In her attempt to explain her own personal anger towards racism, Khilanani recalled a White therapist who called her expression of anger "psychotic", further adding that she had to spend "years unpacking" the therapists' racism to her. Khilanani shared she had "systematically white-ghosted most of my White friends, and I got rid of the couple white BIPOCs (Black and Indigenous people and people of color) that snuck in my crew, too." It is then that she makes those bombshell proclamations by telling her audience: "I had fantasies of unloading a revolver into the head of any White person that got in my way, burying their body and wiping my bloody hands as I walked away relatively guiltless with a bounce in my step, like I did the world a favor." Popular music seems to change at lightning speed, but there’s one thing that you can count on, year after year: when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announces its next induction class, there’s gonna be outrage (and, to be fair, some jubilation). The rage often boils down to this: “An artist that I don’t like got in, but the one that I love didn’t get in! Screw the Rock Hall!” There are more colorful variations of this complaint, just check social media. That’s natural: music fans, and particularly rock music fans, are incredibly passionate about the bands and artists that have shaped their life. A shared love for an artist can create friendships and communities. And as we progress down rock’s timeline, there are more and more offshoots and subgenres of rock and roll. In recent years, the Rock Hall arguments veer from “my favorite band is better/more important than your favorite band” to “my favorite artist is rock and roll and that one isn’t: why are they being inducted?” In its early years, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame subscribed to Rolling Stone magazine’s canon of rock history, which made sense: Jann Wenner is a co-founder of both. And Rolling Stone was never a friend to heavy metal, or even hard rock: they infamously trashed Black Sabbath’s debut; for many, that album is considered heavy metal’s “ground zero.” That’s why the Hall’s failure to vote in Judas Priest, Motorhead and Thin Lizzy seems like such a slap in the face. It’s not just that they aren’t inducting legendary bands; it feels like they’re disrespecting an entire culture, one that is healthy and relevant in 2020. With all due respect, are there festivals or cruises based around the disciples of the Dire Straits in 2020? (I don’t mind calling them out: if Mark Knopfler was so unimpressed with the Hall of Fame that he declined to participate in his band’s induction, I feel justified in sharing his disinterest). The nominating committee has been pretty strategic when it comes to hip-hop nominations. There is usually just one artist on the ballot, so that they don’t split the hip-hop vote. Parents of students in a wealthy Virginia public school district torched the school board over critical race theory as well as so-called "pornographic" books being assigned to high school freshmen students. Black parent said critical race theory was tactic 'used by Hitler and the Ku Klux Klan' Wearing a face shield and wielding the fury of a protective mother bear and father bear, Loudoun County, Va., Elizabeth Perrin and Joe Mobley on "Fox & Friends First" blasted a graphic book that was being taught to children at their school.the mother of a student at the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) eviscerated the school board for pushing critical race theory in the district’s schools. She started her speech to the school board by quoting civil rights leader Martin Luther King’s famous "I Have a Dream" speech before pointing out the past, infamous users of critical race theory. "[Critical race theory] is not an honest dialogue — it is a tactic used by Hitler and the Ku Klux Klan on slavery very many years ago to dumb down my ancestors so we could not think for ourselves," the parent, who is Black, said. "[Critical race theory] is racist, it is abusive, it discriminates against one’s color," she continued. "Let me educate you: An honest dialogue does not oppress. An honest dialogue does not implement hatred or injustice." "It’s to communicate without deceiving people," added the mother, who told the school board the parents did not need "their agreement" but rather for the school board to take action and grow "a backbone." She called for critical race theory to be banned from the school system and told the school board to "think twice before you indoctrinate such racist theories." "You cannot tell me what is or is not racist," the mother continued before telling the school board to "look at" her. "I had to come down here to tell you to your face that we are coming together strong. This will not be the last ‘greet and meet.’" LCPS has also come under fire from parents for a separate issue at the same meeting: raunchy books assigned to high school freshmen that featured underage sex as well as violent scenes of domestic abuse. One LCPS parent who wished to be anonymous said parents were not told of the curriculum change to include the books after the initial class curriculum didn’t list them. One book depicted a scene where a man beats a woman, stuffs her in a closet, then continues to beat her when she asks for water or makes a sound. Another book assigned by LCPS teachers to their students depicted a sex scene. "When the original syllabus was given to the parents of the honors English class in August, these books were not part of the list," the parent said. "They added them without informing the principal or the parents." The parent noted that Flynn provided students with "alternate reading assignments" in class. "This is the same district that banned Dr. Seuss and 'Huckleberry Finn' as being ‘offensive,’ yet they’re having children read pornography that violates every code of conduct in their sexual harassment training."
