Governor DeSantis Delivers Remarks at the SEUS Japan Joint Meeting

Today, Governor Ron DeSantis awarded $7.7 million through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) grant program and the Job Growth Grant Fund (JGGF) to support a large-scale rapid credentialing effort between three state colleges, two technical colleges, and Local Workforce Development Boards (LWDBs). Governor DeSantis also announced $1 million through the Florida Disaster Fund to organizations to support emergency management personnel, national guardsmen, and community members in the recovery process.

Today, Governor Ron DeSantis signed a proclamation declaring November 7 as the first annual Victims of Communism Day in Florida. Florida is home to millions of individuals who came here seeking freedom from countries controlled by Communist governments, including Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. “At a time when Marxism, socialism, and communism are actively promoted by prominent politicians and pop-culture figures in our own country, it is more important than ever to teach Florida’s schoolchildren about the horrific history of Communist countries and to provide them with opportunities to hear from individuals who suffered under the rule of Communist dictators,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “

Governor Ron DeSantis traveled to Punta Gorda to announce that Florida Housing Finance Corporation (Florida Housing) is awarding $5 million to local housing partners to help Floridians impacted by Hurricane Ian pay their home insurance deductibles in the six hardest hit counties. Funding assistance is available to individuals, families, and seniors living in Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Hardee, Lee, and Sarasota counties who apply and qualify through Florida Housing’s local housing partners. Homeowners are encouraged to contact their local SHIP office directly for more information: floridahousing.org

I am working with the Legislature to call a special session to provide permanent property tax relief for storm victims who lost their homes. The session will also provide any necessary appropriations for Southwest Florida as well as further reforms to the property insurance market.

Today, First Lady Casey DeSantis visited Amazon’s Mega Warehouse in Opa-locka, Florida, to highlight the success of the Florida Disaster Fund, which has raised over $45 million to date to help with recovery in communities impacted by Hurricane Ian, and to highlight partnerships between the state and private sector entities following the storm, including Amazon.

Moments after the storm passed, Captains for Clean Water began saving lives and assisting in establishing communication with state agencies. Thank you for selflessly serving the community of Pine Island and our state.

Gov. DeSantis Announces All School Districts to Reopen by Oct. 18th

The only appropriate sentence for the massacre of 17 innocent people is the death penalty. That the jury had a single holdout refuse to authorize a capital sentence represents a miscarriage of justice. My prayers are with the Parkland families.
