U.S. Navy releases first photos of Chinese balloon recovery, China asks US to return debris
Using underwater drones, warships and inflatable vessels, the Navy is carrying out an extensive operation to gather all of the pieces of the massive Chinese spy balloon a U.S. fighter jet shot down off the coast of South Carolina on Saturday.
Russia believes that China's explanation of the circumstance of the entry of its balloon into US airspace is sufficient, and Beijing's reaction to the incident was very responsible, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Tuesday.
"We believe that the explanations given by the Chinese side about the entry of an unmanned Chinese balloon into US airspace as a result of force majeure circumstances are quite sufficient and understandable," Zakharova said
The Chinese government will demand that the United States return the fragments of the weather balloon it downed over its territory last weekend, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said at a regular press briefing on Tuesday.
"This balloon does not belong to the United States, it belongs to the People’s Republic of China. The Chinese government will continue to protect its legitimate rights and interests," she insisted.
The Chinese diplomat reiterated that the balloon was meant exclusively for civilian purposes and that it posed no threat to US national security.

The Fire Dance: The mysterious dance of the Pa Then people, Vietnam
The Pa Then people are perhaps one of Vietnam’s smallest ethnic minorities but their mysterious ritual fire dance resonates far beyond their communities in the northeastern provinces of Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang.
The ritual is striking. The men of the Pa Then community dance on a blazing brazier to exorcise demons and obtain a good harvest.
In the mountainous north of the country, discovery of this "fire dance".
The dance, performed on top of burning coal, illustrates the daring of this remote people in coping with dangers and adversity.
The Pa Then, who number more than 5,000 people, believe fire is a supreme god that brings them good luck. The festival is usually held from the tenth lunar month, the month of the harvest, to the end of the first lunar month.
Each family brings bundles of wood, some chickens, 2-3 kilograms of pork and some rice as offerings. The fire dance is only for males who are deemed strong, skillful and agile, and is held in the evening in the village yard.
The shaman first announces the official reason for the festival and invites the gods to attend the ritual with the locals. If the fire god agrees, the participants go into a trance-like state, jump into the blazing fire and dance on the live coals with their bare feet. Some put a live coal in their mouth.

State-sponsored environmental crime, Brazil sinks its only Aircraft Carrier In Atlantic
1. Brazil has sunk the country's only decommissioned aircraft carrier Sao Paulo in the Atlantic Ocean after the vessel was denied docking due to the risk of running around, the Brazilian navy said.
"Regarding the hull of the decommissioned aircraft carrier 'Sao Paulo' ... we inform that the operation of a planned and controlled sinking was carried out late in the afternoon, February 3, in strict accordance with the plan," the navy said in a statement.
Sao Paulo, Brazil's only aircraft carrier, was withdrawn from service in 2018 and was sold to Turkish company Sok for $1.9 million three years later. The ship's new owner towed it to Turkey, where it was supposed to be scrapped. However, Turkey denied entry.
The vessel was then taken back to Brazil, but the country did not allow it to dock either, citing environmental risks and the port's security, as there was a chance that the aircraft carrier might sink uncontrollably given that its hull had some holes, with water pouring inside.
In January, the Brazilian navy took over after the ship spent several months in the country's territorial waters.
According to the navy's statement, the decommissioned aircraft carrier was scuttled 350 kilometers (217 miles) off the Brazilian coast in the Atlantic Ocean, at an approximate depth of 5,000 meters (16,400 feet). The area was picked with consideration of safety for navigation and the environment, fishery and ecosystems, the navy noted.
Meanwhile, the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources cast doubt on the plan's safety for aquatic organisms considering the amount of toxic material including asbestos, chlorofluorocarbons, microplastic particles and heavy metals aboard it.
The environmental agency also noted that Italy, Norway, Denmark and Turkey had special shipyards for recycling ships, in accordance with the United Nations' International Maritime Organization and the Basel Convention.

Long-Range Missiles To Target Crimea. Peskov: Do Not Forget What Putin Said In Volgograd
1. After the Pentagon's statement about the supply of long-range missiles to Kiev, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reminded that one should not forget yesterday's statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin in Volgograd.
Earlier in the day, the United States announced a $2.2 billion military aid package for Ukraine. The new military assistance package includes air defense systems, long-range missiles for HIMARS and long-range GLSDB projectiles. The Pentagon said that the United States left to the discretion of Kiev the possibility of using long-range projectiles for strikes on the Crimea.
"It's important not to forget Putin's statement yesterday in Volgograd," Peskov said.
On Thursday, Putin said that those who expect to defeat Russia on the battlefield, drag European countries, including Germany, into a new war with Russia, do not understand that "a modern war with Russia will be completely different for them." Putin stressed that Russia had not sent its tanks to the borders of Western countries, but Moscow "has something to answer, and the use of armored vehicles is not the limit."

US says $2.2 billion arms package for Ukraine includes longer-range precision rockets to target Crimea.
A new $2.2 billion US arms package for Ukraine includes a new rocket-propelled precision bomb that could nearly double Kyiv’s strike range against the Russians, the Pentagon said Friday.
Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder said the new package includes the ground-launched small-diameter bombs (GLSDB), a munition that can fly up to 150 kilometers (93 miles), threatening Russian positions and depots far behind the front lines.

Australia: Stranded fishermen use cooler as life jacket, a rescue helicopter approaching them
Three fishermen were saved after their boat experienced engine trouble and filled with water.
The emergency beacon that they activated alerted the maritime authorities who sent a rescue plane to rescue them.
Thankfully the trio had an EPIRB (Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon). The battery-powered device transmitted a continuous distress call which the Australia Maritime Safety Authority picked up around 1 p.m.
The fishermen had no other communication with authorities or other boats, so they just waited and hoped someone would find them.
The trio was fishing about 10 miles off the coast of Albany when their boat started taking on water.
The video shows a rescue helicopter approach the men, who had huddled together for warmth and clung to the blue cooler. One fisherman is trying to flag down the aircraft while clutching the EPIRB. Ocean swells tower over their heads.
Officials rescued the three men and none suffered serious injuries.

Crimea Secured, But Donbas Not Yet So Russias Special Operation Continues , Peskov says
The new regions of Russia are not yet fully protected from threats, so the special military operation is continuing. At the same time, Crimea is already reliably protected, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the media on Friday.
In this way he commented on reports that Ukraine’s Interior Ministry had begun to form new assault brigades for offensive operations, including those against Donbass and Crimea.
"Donbass is not fully protected yet, so the special military operation is continuing. Actually, we must protect the people who live there. For now, this goal has not been fully achieved. This is still to be done," Peskov said, when asked if these territories were protected well enough and if the Kremlin saw Kiev’s statement as a threat.
At the same time, he noted that "the security of Crimea is ensured reliably." [TASS]

Chinese spy balloon: Pentagon says too dangerous to shoot down
The US authorities believe that shooting down a high-altitude surveillance balloon detected in the north of the US, which Washington claims belongs to China, would be too dangerous because of its size, a senior defense official told reporters.
"I'm not going to go into the exact dimensions. We did assess that it was large enough to cause damage from the debris field if we downed it over an area. We had been looking at whether there was an option yesterday over some sparsely populated areas in Montana. But we just couldn't buy down the risk enough to feel comfortable recommending shooting it down yesterday. So, beyond that, though, I can't really go into the dimensions. But there have been reports of pilots seeing this thing, even though it's pretty high up in the sky. So, you know, it's sizeable," the Pentagon press service quoted the official as saying.
"We do not doubt that this is a PRC balloon. Why not shoot it down? We have to do the risk-reward here. So the first question is does it pose a <…> physical kinetic threat to individuals in the United States . Our assessment is it does not. Does it pose a threat to civilian aviation? Our assessment is it does not. Does it pose a significantly enhanced threat on the intelligence side? Our best assessment right now is that it does not," the official continued.
In his words, given that risk, the US military assesses that downing it "wasn't worth it" due to the risk of the debris falling and "hurting somebody or damaging property."
"That is what we recommended to the White House yesterday," the official said.
Earlier, US media quoted Department of Defense Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder as saying that an aerial object, presumed to be a Chinese spy balloon, had been spotted moving in the north of the country. In his words, the balloon "is currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground." The spokesman also said that after the balloon was detected, the US government "acted immediately to protect against the collection of sensitive information." Moreover, he said, "instances of this kind of balloon activity have been observed previously over the past several years.". [TASS]

Opposition rushed to Vučić, fight in the Serbian Parliament, “No to Capitulation”, “Treason” banners
Vučić's opponents interrupted his speech, during which he presented the 10-point plan for the situation in Kosovo and Metohija. At first, the opposition chanted insults, and then tried to attack the president.
Vučić tried to calm the parliamentarians. But they continued to shout curses and argue, pushing each other.
Earlier, Vučić said that Serbia had deprived it of allies in the West by waiving sanctions against Russia. The Serbian leader also noted that Belgrade would not join NATO, calling the supporters of North Atlantic integration "false patriots."
The spectacle of suited legislators scuffling on the floor of the assembly in Belgrade, with banners reading “No to Capitulation” and “Treason,” laid bare the resistance the Serbian leader will face as he seeks to make a deal over Kosovo rather than risk the country’s bid to join the EU.
“It’s in Serbia’s vital interest to remain on the European path,” Vucic told lawmakers in a speech during a debate on the latest push by EU and US mediators to secure an agreement with Kosovo, whose secession in 2008 Serbia refuses to recognize.
Accompanied by loud boos from the opposition benches, Vucic said the European course he’s pursuing “means investments and living standard for us, for our wages and pensions.”
In his speech, the Serbian president reiterated that Belgrade will never recognize Kosovo — or agree to its membership in the United Nations. It’s “one of the most painful” demands presented by Western envoys, he said.

Putin: Russia has "the way" to answer the transfer of tanks by the West, Peskov explained the words
1. Russia has "something" to answer for the supply of Western-made tanks to Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin said at a concert in honor of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Stalingrad.
"We have something to answer, and the use of armored vehicles will not end the matter," the head of state said.
He warned the West against trying to wage war against Russia and stressed that the fighting would be different.
--
2. Answering a question from an Izvestia correspondent, Peskov noted that Putin spoke about the fuller use of Russia's potential.
"As the weapons supplied by the collective West appear, Russia will more fully use its existing potential in order to respond in the course of a special military operation," Peskov said.
