When John F. Kennedy took the oath of office as president of the United States, he inherited a very dangerous world. The Cold War was at its height, Cuba had turned communist under Fidel Castro, and the Soviet Union was increasing its presence just under 90 miles off the coast of Florida. The failure of the CIA backed invasion reduced the image of American power in its own hemisphere, created a communist hero out of Fidel Castro, and emboldened the Soviet Union to make even greater gains into the Caribbean, especially in Cuba challenging American power which led to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Erich Alfred Hartmann was a German fighter pilot during World War II and the most successful fighter ace in the history of aerial warfare. He flew 1,404 combat missions and was credited with shooting down a total of 352 Allied aircraft: 345 Soviet and seven American while serving with the Luftwaffe. After his capture, the U.S. Army handed Hartmann, his pilots, and ground crew over to the Soviet Union on 14 May, where he was imprisoned in accordance with the Yalta Agreements, which stated that airmen and soldiers fighting Soviet forces had to surrender directly to them. Hathcock's record and the extraordinary details of the missions he undertook made him a legend in the U.S. Marine Corps. Anthony Johnson was a man known for achieving wealth in the early 17th-century Colony of Virginia. Born in Angola, he was one of the first African Americans whose right to own a slave for life was recognized by the Virginia courts. Held as an indentured servant in 1621, he earned his freedom after several years, and was granted land by the colony. He later became a tobacco farmer in Maryland. He attained great wealth after completing his term as an indentured servant, and has been referred to as "'the black patriarch' of the first community of Negro property owners in America."
