How to Set up an ECOVILLAGE or CO-HOUSING COMMUNITY— Ep. 074
Last year we toured the EcoVillage at Ithaca (episode: https://youtu.be/n-uH36w9xg8), which we had contacted early on to see what we would be able to learn from them about the way they structured their village for our own small co-housing dreams. There were plenty of questions that poured in from that tour, so we decided to go back to the EcoVillage to get more of your questions answered. Thanks in advance for all of those who submitted direct questions via the community tab here!
This will be a series of interviews, starting with this one with Bill Goodman, who has been an advising lawyer (and resident of the EcoVillage at Ithaca) for the last 20 years. This video talks about how the EcoVillage is structured, other ways to structure co-housing communities, how shares are distributed, home ownership, and more.

OFFICE to TINY HOME Conversion — Ep. 073
One of the main structures on the land we acquired is a quaint 600 square foot (56 square meter) building, which served as the office for a former plant nursery. The nursery only operated for the warmer months out of the year, so this building wasn't equipped with heating and some other amenities. However, the building itself was solidly built, has some good bones, and with a little updating—can be converted to a very lovely tiny home on the land.

Making Homemade CALENDULA SALVE (Meditative) — Ep. 071
Just felt like waking up one morning and making some homemade calendula salve. Most of these will be used as little gifts for friends and loved ones.
With this recipe, I used calendula, St. Johns wort, and comfrey. I only showed adding the calendula here, but this is actually a calendula, St. John's wort and comfrey salve.
Containers (may contain affiliate codes):
- Vivaplex green glass containers - https://amzn.to/3qZGG8z
Recipe:
- Take dried calendula flowers and infuse in olive oil. Separately do the same for Comfrey and St. John's wort. Shake bottles regularly and let infuse for a few weeks.
- Strain the oil from the infusions through a cheesecloth
- Compost the remaining plant parts
- Place approximately 1 cup of infused oil aside. Add some vitamin E to mixture.
- Use a double boiler and slowly melt 1/4 cup of beeswax over the double boiler.
- Once it fully melts, add the 1 cup of oil over the beeswax and make sure it consistently melts. Stir as needed.
- Before you remove from heat, you can add some drops of your favorite essential oil (I used lavender)
- Before the mixture cools, add to containers.
- Let cool before placing the caps on tightly
- Store in a cool, dark place away from heat and light.
This particular salve can be good for chapped hands, bruises, and burns, for example.

We Got That DEER FENCE—FINALLY! — Ep. 070
Though it was two months behind our planned schedule, we finally DID get that deer exclusion fence that we wanted. Though we couldn't afford the entire (extended) run, we made due with a temporary fence that connects the newly installed fence with the pre-existing one. There are still some weak areas in the old fence that we're fixing, but luckily the winter hasn't been a bad one this year and the deer pressure has been light thus far.
Thanks to DeerBusters.com for sponsoring this video. They helped provide the main woven wire fence and the Trident fence, which made extending and doing this deer exclusion fence possible.
(Stay around to the end to get some more deer humor)...

QUICK, EASY, AFFORDABLE DIY Deer Fence Installation — Ep. 068
The white-tail deer population in New York State is notoriously over carrying capacity, which results in over-browsing of the native plants, trees seedlings, and planted garden beds. One of the more common methods folks use to exclude deer is fencing around individual garden beds and plants. However, given that the land we are stewarding was a former nursery, which already had a 12-acre deer fence—we want to utilize that to protect a good portion of the land. Unfortunately the fence is broken in quite a few areas, so it will need repairs.
Ultimately we want to extend the deer exclusion fence around 20 acres, so it can include a larger portion of forest to provide more forest recruitment and regeneration, but it is far too expensive at this stage. Luckily we partnered up with DeerBusters.com, which specializes in exclusion fences and more, to provide some quick, easy and affordable solutions to deer fencing. In this video, we'll show you how we're installing a DIY Max Strength Deer fence with Deluxe tensioning kit.
You can find the items at www.deerbusters.com.

Laying a 1000 FT. UNDERGROUND FIBER CABLE, Step-by-Step — Ep. 067
There's a lot of unexpected, unanticipated projects that have cropped up in the past year, and planning, designing and laying a 1000 foot underground fiber cable for high speed internet and communications line to the common house and future satellite homes was definitely one of those projects!
Though we already had internet, it was being beamed by a building-to-building bridge, which wasn't as reliable as running a cable underground. It just so happened that we had a trencher that was being rented for the installation of a cantilever gate (to help complete the deer exclusion fence) —and it was BEFORE we did direct seeding in the meadow, which is where the trench would need to be dug for running the fiber line.
Sander really thought through the entire process, especially when designing the Local Area Network (LAN) that we would have for the future homes, so he wanted to create this step-by-step how to video for anyone challenged with laying their own high speed communications line on their homestead.

500+ Different HOSTAS Garden Tour! — Ep. 064
Laura, the owner of Riverow Books, a special, antiquarian book store in Owego, New York (highly recommend visiting at: https://riverow.com/) tipped us off to her uncle, Bob Smith, who took a liking to Hostas over 40 years ago and became quite the connoisseur of the popular shade tolerant species. In fact, since planting his first Hosta, Bob has moved up to over 540 different named varieties and species, which we'll cover here. Though Bob is right outside the Finger Lakes area, we made an exception, especially because we were road-tripping back to the Finger Lakes—and couldn't pass up the opportunity to see another fabulous garden.
After seeing Bob's under-the-deck Hosta plantings, we knew that we'd likely follow his lead under our community house deck at Flock Finger Lakes.
Let us know what Hostas really stood out for you and if you're growing a specific variety of Hosta you love in the comments below.

Designing and Planting a PERENNIAL, POLLINATOR GARDEN — Ep. 062

HOME-ON-WHEELS, FLYING CARS, RAT RODS — We Didn't Expect THIS When Researching TRACTORS! — Ep. 060
Life would be intensely dull if it didn't have characters, and our good friend and neighbor, Andy—is one of those people. Andy started working with model cars when he was around 4 or 5 years old and hasn't stopped since—building all sorts of interesting automobile mash-ups, including "rat rod-style" sleepers, homes-on-wheels, trucks with their own gas stations, and even a flying car...(well, maybe the last one needs just a little imagination).... When he came over to offer tractor advice, we didn't know what to expect until he showed up in this....We hope you enjoy this episode and Andy's passion for creative exploration.

We Planted 70,000+ BULBS in Our Lawn!!! — Ep. 059
We were planning on planting bulbs in two areas of the land—and chance would have it, I got a call from a friend, Peggy Anne, to see if .... we would be interested in doing bulbs in lawn. "YES! Of course!" we exclaimed. "We have a 1/4 acre and another 1 acre that we had that planned." Well, the stars aligned and we were able to partner with the European Union Bulb Exporters, Espoma Organic, and a number of friends to help plant over 70,000 flower bulbs in the landscape.
We'll have to wait for spring for the big display, but in the meantime—they're all in the ground!

This RARE BOG Was Almost Destroyed by a Gravel Mine — Ep. 057
As a student at Cornell, Summer Rayne remembered touring the rare bogs and fens of the region. Here she meets up with retired professor, Bob Beck, to go on a tour of the fens, bogs, and wetlands of the O.D. von Engeln Preserve at Malloryville, which is permanently protected by the Nature Conservancy. This bog and wetland area was threatened by an open gravel mine upstream, but local citizens came together to protect it, so this land is representative of what happens when people care and get together to do something about it.

FORAGING Wild APPLES for CIDER — Ep. 056
This video is brought to you by our partner-sponsor, VisitIthaca.com, which can help you plan your next getaway to the Finger Lakes.
Steve Selin was a musician when he met the late, inimitable Peter Hoover, who was a lifelong ardent string band music player and ethnomusicologist. Peter also was a cider maker, which rubbed off on Steve, who later founded South Hill Cider in Ithaca, NY, which sits between two state parks and opens up to one of the public trails of the Finger Lakes Land Trust. We met up with Steve and his friend Melody back in August to scope out some apples for cider making to learn about what makes a good cider apple versus a good eating apple.
To visit and taste Steve's special ciders, head over to https://www.southhillcider.com/ and visit other interesting destinations on our map: https://www.flockfingerlakes.com/map

On the outside, the GreenStar Coop may look like any other modern day grocery store, but it's anything but. We want to give some pop of color and good pollination possibilities to our lawn at least two—maybe three seasons—out of the year, so we decided to plant some both spring and fall bulbs around the new Magnolia 'Ann' tree.
This episode is brought to us by @Espoma Organic, which produces solid organic and natural products for both indoor and outdoor gardeners. More on them at www.espoma.com.
