What Is Mental Health To You..? Ep.4 - Abandonment Issues
We started our discussions with Touch Deprivation & Attachments, which we will come back to occasionally as they fed into so many aspects of mental health. As a natural progression, we've started talking about Abandonment Issues...
The most interesting & challenging aspect of this is that all three of us have or have gone through this issue. On a personal level, it hit home hard for me as this is something I've dealt with for most of my adult life currently in conversations with my Moms as she left me at 2yrs old to the devices of my father's siblings. This period of my life was very cruel...
Sadly, I don't believe I will ever get closure in regards to my Moms as I find it extremely difficult to reconcile how she was able to set aside her maternal instincts & leave me to such cruelty. Additionally, my adopted mother, who is white decided when I was the age of 15 that I was no longer her son upon divorcing my Pops. I'd spent 10+ years of my life with her, especially as she had insisted to Pops that she wouldn't return to the UK unless I came with her from Nigeria. we'll get into this a little as time goes by...

What Is Mental Health To You? Ep.3
Father-son relationships can be the most difficult to navigate. Culture, tradition & ethnic demographics play a huge role in these relationships & sadly, many a time, men find they have to EARN from their fathers the love their mothers freely give them.
Out of all the relationships we have as men, I personally believe the father-son relationship is THE most challenging. Unacknowledged trauma, which leads to it being unresolved can have toxic effects on our own relationships well into our adult lives.
We also have to look at the background & upbringing of our fathers. We have to sometimes look past our own anger & ask ourselves what was it like for them when they were my age or growing up.

What Is Mental Health To You Ep 2 - Touch Deprivation

The lack of "touch" whilst growing up has affected men in so many varying ways. Most importantly it affects our relationships with our partners & children. What is this "touch" that we're speaking on? It is a hug, a reassuring hand or arm around/on the shoulder to say everything will be ok. It's that positive affirmation, a word of encouragement; even a smile. Many men have grown up in households where this has been lacking, which in many cases makes it difficult for them to show something they've never experienced to their partners or children. This is also a cultural issue as touch is "not a thing" in some cultures. for example, in most Black households of my generation (60'/70's born children) hugs were on special occasions like birthdays, weddings, funerals, etc & for many of us who had white friends growing up & sometimes seeing the complete opposite was confusing & had us asking "why don't my parents hug me or tell me its ok & that I'll do better next time...."
The official name for this lack of trust is Touch Deprivation; but what is touch deprivation?
Touch deprivation, aka touch hunger or touch isolation, is the lack of human touch or physical contact with others. It occurs when individuals experience a prolonged absence or shortage of tactile stimulation, which can be essential for emotional well-being & social connection. Touch is a fundamental human need & plays a crucial role in various aspects of our lives, including bonding, communication, and emotional regulation.
With touch deprivation, the person may have feelings of loneliness, emotional distress & a longing for physical connection. It can have negative effects on mental health, as touch is known to release hormones like oxytocin and reduce stress levels. Touch deprivation can also impact physical health, as touch has been linked to improved immune function and overall well-being.
Factors such as social isolation, lack of close relationships, cultural norms, and certain circumstances (such as living alone or being in an environment with limited physical contact opportunities) can contribute to touch deprivation. Certain groups, such as the elderly, individuals with disabilities, or those in long-term institutional care, may be particularly susceptible to touch deprivation.

He's A Mad Man!
Our understanding of mental health is extremely important. Many of us have no understanding of it until we're going through the challenges ourselves.

What Is Mental Health To You?
Some of the most difficult conversations for us to have as men, especially Black men, revolve around our emotions & mental health.
As someone who has struggled with PTSD, anxiety, depression & NOT being expressive about my own challenges, I was inspired to start Drum 'n Fire Productions. I wanted to challenge & change the ideal that men aren't vocal about our emotions & mental health by creating space & avenues for men to freely discuss these things, their associated causes & effects. I also wanted to give a voice to those whose voices are usually not heard in the men's mental health discussion; for example, those who are or have been incarcerated, those we colloquially call "the road man dem" & direct our brothers to the assistance we so desperately need. Join our podcast, which will be launching on 24.6.2023 here & on Rumble & get in on the discussion.
Ladies, you're not left out; we want to hear from you, too! We want to hear how you've coped & managed with your partner's mental health. How you've encouraged, lifted up & been a support system for them. But most of all, we want to know how what it entails being our "Secret Keepers".
