George Washington, the Hebrew congregation, and the religious test for participation in the Republic
George Washington once spoke to a congregation of Jews in America to assert that they had a place in the new Republic, as surely as anyone else.
While a majority of Presidents have been one particular flavor of Christian, we've had the odd exception along the way, largely as a matter of culture and tradition. As of 2021 we even have as many as *two* Catholics in the mix.
Will this always be the case?
Here are my short thoughts on the matter. Let me know what you think!

What's in the Mayflower Compact?
Drafted and signed in 1620, the Mayflower Compact is one of the oldest formal documents created by European settlers in North America. What is it, why did they write it, and why is it relevant today?
Here are my short thoughts on the matter. Let me know what you think!

These two important documents are back-to-back in WHAT SO PROUDLY WE HAIL, prompting me to consider their relation to each other. In this video I explore some names, dates, and reasoning behind both the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the Gettysburg Address (1863).

"IN A STRANGE COUNTRY"--What Ralph Ellison teaches us about race and national identity.
Ralph Ellison was a sailor in the 1940s. His short story IN A STRANGE COUNTRY is about a black sailor who makes port in Wales, only to get beat up by a group of white American sailors.
When he's taken in by some benevolent Welshmen, he learns a thing or two about loving his own country, and celebrating others.

Education, Heroes, and Unity: The Wisdom of Mary Antin #America #Homeschool #WhatSoProudlyWeHail
Mary Antin left Russia as a young girl and was inspired by American figures like George Washington. Soon she adopted him as her own hero and happily assimilated herself into the American experiment, despite not being connected to it by birth.
This is a powerful idea that we often set by the wayside in the modern age. In this video, let's talk about American heroes, and how they can help us overcome the divisions we all-too-readily embrace in the 21st Century.

Who was "The Man Without a Country?" | From "WHAT SO PROUDLY WE HAIL" by Kass, Kass, and Schaub
Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909) was an American writer who penned this beautiful story and published it in 1863--right in the midst of the Civil War.
It focuses on the fictional Philip Nolan, a man banished from the United States after he followed Aaron Burr in the early 19th century. While he initially got what he wanted with the banishment, he eventually came to regret his decision...although his judgment was permanent.
What he learned during his exile is powerful, beautiful, and instructive about the value of a home nation.

Who was the WW2 airman frozen in the ice?
In 2005, two hikers in the Sierra Nevada mountains found the frozen body of an American airman from World War Two. Identifying his remains would bring closure to a mystery that had lasted sixty years, and left four Gold Star families wondering what had happened to their sons.
The book FINAL FLIGHT by Peter Stekel is an exhaustive investigation into who this airman was, how he got there, and who was with him when his plane crashed. Get your copy here: https://www.amazon.com/Final-Flight-Mystery-Frozen-Airmen/dp/0899974759/

Who signed the Declaration of Independence?
In the spirit of my Mayflower Passengers video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tA1rY4gdQgs&t=66s) , I decided to do a little breakdown of the signers of the Declaration of Independence!
The 250th anniversary of this historic American moment is just a few short years away. Take some time to read up on these folks and learn more about the age in which they lived, as well as what inspired them to make this life-altering decision.

ON STRANGER TIDES--The Book is Always Better! #Pirates #Reading #JusticeForJohnnyDepp
Did you know that the fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie was based on a book? I didn't, until 2010. ON STRANGER TIDES was released in 1988, and I don't know how it flew under the radar. It's a great piece of historical fantasy.

Who is Brandon Sanderson? My review of ELANTRIS and WARBREAKER
The biggest name in epic fantasy right now is @Brandon Sanderson . He had half a dozen books out from his own universe before he released the THE GATHERING STORM with Tor Books, which began the end of the late Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series.
In this video I'll run through two of his standalone fantasies, ELANTRIS and WARBREAKER, which are two different takes on the same idea.

THIS SIDE OF WILD--Paulsen helps me say goodbye to my dog
Today my much-loved Australian shepherd Bo had to be put down at ten years of age. This is the fourth time in my life that one of my dogs has died. It never gets easier, but you find different ways to cope with it. One way, for me anyhow, is to go to the familiar and comforting stories of Gary Paulsen, and the many dogs he had over the years.
