Deer Comes Running When Her Caretaker Calls Her Name
Of all the deer that I have cared for over the last 5 years, these two are my favorites! Zoey and MiLady! Unfortunately, they both have had a hard life. Zoey was separated from her mother during a flood, when she was just a tiny fawn. Her leg was injured as she tried to find safety. MiLady has always been a loner. The other deer seemed to shun her from the very beginning. So sad! And then, last Spring, her fawn got hit by a car, and died when it was barely one month old. Shortly after that, MiLady became very sick. I believe she had an infection in her mouth due to a horsefly bite. Her face is still quite swollen, and she still has a hard time eating, but she is hanging in there.

Wild fawn eats from caretaker's hand for the first time
This is Betty, and isn't she adorable! She is Bella's fawn, and Zoey's grandfawn. She is not shy at all! She is the newest addition to the herd and is full of personality. Not timid at all, like the other young ones.

Whole herd of deer relaxing after being fed
Deer are most vulnerable to predators when they are drinking, and going to the bathroom. And, because of that, deer have a digestion system that does not require much water, nor do they have a lot of excrement because they have a four-chambered stomach. The first chamber, called the rumen, is for storage. The rumen allows for the deer to gather a lot of food at once and then digest it later. The deer find a safe place to eat, and then bring the food back up into their mouth and chew it again (chewing their cud). I just fed them, and they are now relaxing and getting settled down so they can regurgitate their food and enjoy!

Deer and fawn grooming in the woods.
I have cared these two does, Zoey and Babe, since they were very young. They stop by everyday for a little snack, and then hang out for a while before heading out. Zoey has brought her fawn to see me today! It's so relaxing watching deer. They bring me peace in this crazy world...

Out of food! Oh no!
My favorite part of every day is feeding the deer. When they want to eat, they peer in my doors and windows, until they get my attention. They already ate once today, and now they are back for seconds. But...I am out of food! The herd is growing and so is their appetite (unlike my bank account). So, now I have to somehow make them understand that I don't have any more snacks for them today...

Oh No! They ate all the food!
Well...I screwed up and ran out of food today! But, I'm puuurrrty sure they'll survive. Ha! It's not like they aren't surrounded by vegetation this time of year! They're soooo spoiled!

Two Deer and Adorable Fawn Visit Woman
I used to have two fantastic dogs, which I loved dearly. We had 15 great years together, but they are gone now, and I miss them dearly! So, I decided to try and befriend the nearby deer. This is Lucy and her best friend Bella and her 2 month old fawn. They stop by daily for a little snack.

Baby Raccoon Finds a New Home
This little one accidentally got shut inside my recycling room for a night. I think it is now on it's own...oh no! ☹😔 Well...I was wondering 🤔 who was drinking the goats milk I left on the porch for MiLady's fawn, and now I know! I hope this baby's mamma comes back for it. But, if not...I think it's a keeper! I'll take care of it! I named it Ricky Racoon 😍😍

Doe and Starving Fawn
Sadly, this little one month old fawn is trying to get milk when there is none! You can clearly see the fawn struggling to get milk, and, if you turn up the volume, you can hear her whimpering. Her mother dried up, due to an infection, and I have started her on antibiotics. Let's hope that the antibiotics work on mamma, and that I am successful in coaxing the little one to drink some goat's milk from a bowl tomorrow...
