SPEAKER: Maria Wronska-Friend Maria Wronska-Friend (Senior Research Fellow, James Cook University, Queensland, Australia) presents a fascinating story of how Javanese batik textiles have become, from the end of the nineteenth century, an important source of inspiration for artists, designers and textile producers outside Indonesia, especially in Europe and Africa. In particular, the technique and aesthetics of Javanese batik left a significant impact in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements of the Netherlands. Her research considers how a traditional craft form takes on a different life across two continents, inspiring new textile designs in Africa as well as inspired the works of modernists artists who have never practised batik, such as Henri Matisse, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and Henry van de Velde. Bali Diving, Drop Off, Plongée à Bali , Buceo Bali, nurkowanie Bali,Tulamben Part-7 The Drop Off Tulamben Bay’s Drop-Off/Wall is an old lava flow from Mount Agung. It is at the opposite end of the bay, about a 15mins slow walk, from the USAT Liberty Shipwreck. The dive starts on a steep sand slope with nudibranchs, flounders, and goby and shrimp sets. At 12m are sponges with many varieties of shrimp, and there are many crinoids, often with attendant ghost pipefish. Continuing round to the right, the slope develops into a reef with very impressive topography, becoming a vertical wall, from 15m to below 60m, which then reverts to a steep slope. Visibility in this area is best in the morning, usually 15-20m, due to the amount of plankton in the water. Due to the location it is rare that there is a current, even a mild one. Although there is some silt from run-off after heavy rainfall, the wall has profuse sponges, corals, black coral bushes, and gorgonian fans. One of the fans at 30m is over 2m in diameter. Swim along the drop, and finish your dive with your safety stop over a Coral Garden. Not to be missed! 25 minutes by boat from the entry of the park in Bali, and 15 minutes from the furthest dive site of Menjangan. Enjoy the lanscapes on the way! Swim slowly along the wall and unearth nudibranchs, scorpion fish and small crabs in the coral. You will not be able to miss the parrot fish, angel fish, butterfly fish and clown fish living along this drop. White tip sharks have also been spotted on this site! Hard and soft coral cover this vertical wall. Giant gorgonians in which you can find pygmee sea horses, that seem to adventure above the void. You will make the most of this site from the top of the drop, at 5 meters depth, and the bottom of the drop at 40 meters, if your qualifications allow it.
