Jackaroo - Story and Song - Traditional song
Click 1:33 to skip story intro. Jackaroo, also known as, Jack A-Roe, Jack Monroe, Jackero and many other names, is a traditional folk song that dates back to at least to 1830 and possibly much older than that according to Wiki. A lady dresses up as a man so she can be with her own true love in the war. In those times women were not allowed to fight in war. This theme is in many different folk songs. I tell a story before singing and playing it on the guitar. I use sort of what is known as, the Carter scratch right hand pick strum technique.
JACKAROO - Lyrics
traditional
Am C E
There was a wealthy merchant, in London he did dwell
F C F C
He had a beautiful daughter, the truth to you I'll tell
Am E G Am
Oh the truth to you I'll tell
She had sweethearts a plenty and men of high degree
But none but Jack the sailor her true love e'er could be
Oh her true love e'er could be
Now Jackie's gone a sailing with trouble on his mind
He's left his native country and his darling girl behind
Oh his darling girl behind
She went down to a tailor's shop and dressed in man's array
She climbed on board a vessel to convey herself away
Oh convey herself away
Before you get on board Sir, your name I'd like to know
She smiled all in her countenance they call me Jack A Roe
Oh they call me Jack A Roe
I see your waist is slender, your fingers they are small
Your cheeks too red and rosy to face the cannonball
Oh to face the cannonball
I know my waist is slender, my fingers they are small
My cheeks too red and rosy to face the cannonball
Oh to face the cannonball
The war soon being over, she went and looked around
Among the dead and wounded her darling boy she found
Oh her darling boy she found
She picked him up all in her arms and carried him to town
She sent for a physician who quickly healed his wounds
Oh who quickly healed his wounds
This couple they got married, so well they did agree
This couple they got married, so why not you and me
Oh why not you and me

I`ll Rise When The Rooster Crows - Banjo
I`ll Rise When The Rooster Crows is a traditional American Folk song. The Binkley Brothers Dixie Clodhoppers recorded this song in 19 and 28. I play it two finger thumb lead on the mountain banjo. If the banjo sounds quieter lately it`s because I stuffed a huge car wash sponge in the back to cut down on the overtones and volume. Also I`ve started adding more compression so I can crank the volume really loud without clipping. It`s all a work in progress folks. Thanks for listening.
1. If the golden shoes you hear so much about
Were worn down here, you'd soon wear 'em out.
We're gonna take up 'em yonder for to put on our robes.
Gonna put on my golden shoes.
CHORUS: I'll rise when the rooster crows.
I'll rise when the rooster crows.
I'm going back south where the sun shines hot,
Down where the sugar cane grows.
2. Don't let old Satan try to fool you,
For the gates will be closed and you can't get through.
With a long white robe and the white socks too,
Gonna put on my golden shoes.
3. When Gabriel comes for to blow his horn,
Well, you needn't pull back for you gotta go on,
So prepare yourself for the judgment day,
For you can't take money and buy your way.
4. We'll have cider all the fall,
For I said I's going to the ball,
Where the duck chews tobacco and the goose drinks wine,
The old hen cackles while the rooster keeps the time.
5. Whatcha gonna do when the women are all dead?
Gonna sit in the corner with a hung-down head.
Well, if I had to marry, I wouldn't marry for riches.
I'd marry a big fat gal who couldn't wear the britches.

Down By The Glenside - Irish Folk Ballad - Guitar and Vocal
Down by the Glenside, also known as, The Bold Finian Men was written by, Peadar Kearney in 1916 around the time of the Easter Rebellion which happen in April of 1916, when the Irish attempted another overthrow of British rule in Ireland. I sing and play it on guitar with a simple arpeggio fingerpicking pattern.
Down by the Glenside - The Bold Fenian Men
Written by Peadar Kearney
Performed by Dan D. Dirges
Guitar in standard tuning: 3/4 time, basic fingerpicking arpeggio straight rolls. Or T I M I M I
'Twas down by the glenside, I met an old woman
A-plucking young nettles, she ne’er saw me coming
I listened a while to the song she was humming
Glory O, Glory O, to the bold Fenian men
'Tis fifty long years since I saw the moon beaming
On strong manly forms, on eyes with hope gleaming
I see them again, sure, in all my sad dreaming
Glory O, Glory O, to the bold Fenian men.
When I was a young girl, their marching and drilling
Awoke in the glenside sounds awesome and thrilling
They loved dear old Ireland, to die they were willing
Glory O, Glory O, to the bold Fenian men.
Some died by the glenside, some died near a stranger
And wise men have told us their cause was a failure
But they stood by old Ireland and never feared danger
Glory O, Glory O, to the bold Fenian men
I passed on my way, God be praised that I met her
Be life long or short, sure I'll never forget her
We may have brave men, but we'll never have better
Glory O, Glory O, to the bold Fenian men
'Twas down by the glenside, I met an old woman
A-plucking young nettles, she ne’er saw me coming
I listened a while to the song she was humming
Glory O, Glory O, to the bold Fenian men

Green Rocky Road - Banjo Version
Green, Green Rocky Road is a song was written by, Len Chandler? Based on other older traditional songs best I can gather. Dave Van Ronk`s incredible interpretation of the song is the one that became famous. Oscar Isaac played this song exceptionally well for the Coen Brothers movie, Inside Llewyn Davis. I came up with this banjo interpretation. Right hand technique is known as two finger thumb lead.
Green, Green Rocky Road Lyrics
[Verse 1]
When I go by Baltimore
Need no carpet on my floor
You come along, follow me
We'll go down to Galilee
[Hook]
Green green rocky road
You promenade in green
Tell me who ya love
Tell me who ya love
[Verse 2]
See that crow up in the sky
He don't walk, he just fly
He don't walk, he don't run
He keep on flapping, til' the sun
[Hook]
Howlin' Green green rocky road
You promenade in green
Tell me who ya love
Tell me who ya love
[Verse 3]
Little Miss Jane you run to wall
Don't you stumble, Don't you fall
Don't you sing, Don't you shout
When I sing you come runnin' out
Howlin' Green green rocky road
You Promenade in green
Tell me who ya love
Tell me who ya love
[Verse 4]
Hooka-dooka soda cracker
Does your mama chew tobacco?
If your mama chews tobacco
Hooka-dooka, hooka-dooka soda cracker, yes
[Hook]
Green green rocky road
You promenade in green
Tell me who ya love
Tell me who ya love
[Verse 5]
When I go by Baltimore
Needin' no carpet on my floor
Ya Come along, follow me
There's a man in Galilee
[Hook]
Howlin' Green green rocky road
You promenade in green
Tell me who ya love
Tell me who ya love
