President Joe Biden met with Ukraine’s defense and foreign ministers, and with Poland’s president, whom he assured that the U.S. vow to defend NATO territory is a “sacred commitment.” He’ll later give what’s been billed as a major speech on U.S. and allied efforts to aid Ukraine and counter Russia. Russia is relying on “indiscriminate” bombardment after heavy troop casualties in the month after its invasion, the U.K. said. Russia’s military said it’s focusing on taking full control of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region, a signal that the Kremlin may be backing away from more ambitious military gains after a month of fighting. The U.S. and European Union unveiled an agreement to help Europe wean itself off Russian fuel imports. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the U.S. and EU of aiming to “destroy” Russia through “hybrid war, a total war.”

President Joe Biden met with U.S. troops stationed near Poland’s border with Ukraine on Friday, also visiting a barber shop and dining facility set up for the troops, where he joined them to share some pizza. 👉 U.S. President Joe Biden is visiting Poland on Friday in support of allied responses to the humanitarian and human rights crises sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as allies take new action to deter Russian President Vladimir Putin. Poland, a NATO ally, has taken in millions of Ukrainian refugees. Biden met with U.S. troops stationed in Jasionka near Poland’s border with Ukraine while awaiting the arrival of Polish President Andrzej Duda. Duda was delayed when his plane suffered a mechanical issue en route, forcing him to return to Poland's capital, Warsaw. Officials said Duda was never in any danger, and the Polish leader eventually arrived in the eastern town of Rzeszów to meet with Biden. Biden’s arrival in Poland came hours after meeting Friday in Brussels with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, after which they announced formation of a joint task force to reduce Europe’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels. Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin has used the profits from its energy sales "to drive his war machine" in Ukraine. Biden said he wanted "to make it clear that the American people would not be part of subsidizing Putin’s brutal, unjustified war against the people of Ukraine.
