High Tech find & Cowboy Tech capture of Roman the 4-H project steer 29 Jan 2024
Roman the 4-H project steer got loose Sunday 28 Jan 2024. The owners asked me to saddle up my mare, Avi, and bring a rope - so I could help search - and when we found him we could rope him and get him back home. Some of the owner family searched on foot, some by car, some on a four wheeler. My horse logged 13.4 miles searching during this first phase of the search. We called off the search about 3:30am.
Search resumed Monday morning 29 Jan 2024 - after a wee few hours of sleep and enough time given for my horse to eat her grain and a good bit of her hay. In daylight we found more tracks but would lose them when the steer travelled down the hard portions of the gravel road. So the owners called in a drone operator with thermal imaging capability - Drew Whelan (517) 442-7819. It took a little less than two hours for Drew to find the steer about a mile beyond where our ground search had gone. Drew hovered his Thermal Imaging Drone over the steer to allow us to more easily find him in the woodlot.
High Tech find was accomplished by Drew Whelan (517) 442-7819. Cowboy Tech capture attempt began by Jack Griffes on his mare Avi.
The 4-H project black feeder steer was in a woodlot - so we slowly worked him out into a soybean stubble field. Steer sprinted - horse pursued but sandbagged by rating the steer too far back rather than moving up where I could catch him quickly. So we ran the whole quarter mile field length. Steer entered a flooded area and I caught him there. Then bit by bit my mare Avi and I worked him over to the road and onto the stock trailer - giving him many breaks to keep his stress level from getting too high. My horse logged 7.9 miles during this second phase of search and capture.

Rain - working gate - picking up rider - 15 Jan 2024
Rain the 4yr old Spotted Saddle Horse filly is basically 2-1/2 months into her 3 months of starting level training. It was 6 degrees Fahrenheit when this video was shot and there was no warm up beforehand. We work the gate all four ways - push away walk through - push away back through - pull towards walk through - pull towards back through - and we do all four ways with right hand on gate and then again with left hand on gate. We then, again with no warm up, work on picking up rider from a raised mounting platform off the picnic table, a boulder, and a 500 gallon propane tank.

Rain's second session - pick up rider from raised mounting platform - 8 Jan 2024
This is Rain's second session learning to pick up her rider from a raised mounting platform. You can see the full first session here https://rumble.com/v45pe40-rains-first-session-pick-up-rider-from-raised-mounting-platform-6-jan-2024.html
Training horses always involves some risk of injury (or even death) to the horse, the trainer, any spectators, equipment used, etc. - this risk is totally your own as you will be making your own judgements on what to do. As with any suggestions on any subject you must weigh them out for yourself and proceed accordingly - at your own risk.
You can see videos of other first sessions with other horses here on my website https://griffes.tripod.com/comeover.html and that may prove helpful - because every horse learns at a different speed and requires a bit of adaptation in training.

Rain's first session - pick up rider from raised mounting platform - 6 Jan 2024
This is Rain's first session learning to pick up her rider from a raised mounting platform. She has some trouble connecting the dots of what I am asking at the start - so you can see my approach shift to try and help her understand. This was a VERY long first session teaching a horse to pick up its rider from a raised mounting platform. At about 51.20 minutes my mic quit working and the video is silent for about two minutes until I get the mic back working again and my narration resumes. I left the silent video portion in so you see the whole training session. I cut out the video of me fixing the mic issue and commenting on the mic issue and resumed the video where the training starts anew - so no part of the actual training was cut out.
I could have stopped this session when it was much shorter - so why did I keep the session going for about an hour and a third? The horse was still willing to learn. And very slowly progress was being made. So I kept the training session going until it looked clear that she was done learning for the session - at which point I stopped.

Rain - progress - working the gate 21 Dec 2023
Rain the 4yr old Spotted Saddle Horse filly started in training 18 Oct 2023. This video shot on 21 Dec 2023 (two months into training) shows her progress. https://rumble.com/v448xxr-rain-progress-working-the-gate-21-dec-2023.html Working the gate is IMO a good progress test because it involves a number of skills which must be done calmly and must be transitioned between calmly, precisely, and immediately on cue. And working the gate while the boss mare must be kept from exiting increases the challenge level a bit.
So you can gauge progress:

Rain working the gate 15 Dec 2023
Rain the 4 yr old Spotted Saddle horse started in training on 18 Oct 2023 - so working the gate is a progress test done on 15 Dec 2023 pretty nearly two months in to training. So why use "working the gate" as a progress test? Working the gate requires the horse to know all the basic lateral movements and do each until the cue is released - then either stand still and await further direction OR if a different cue has been given immediately execute the new cue - sometimes two lateral movements are needed simultaneously in opposite directions such as shoulder yielding right while hip yielding left. Backing only while cued and going forward only when cued are also essential to get the gate worked properly. And of course the horse which moves off subtle leg cues then also needs to when told whoa at the latch needs to NOT MOVE while the rider does the required movement on the horse to work the latch - basically ignore what may feel like a cue when told to "stand still and grow roots awaiting further direction." This is why, in my opinion, working the gate is a good progress test for a horse in starting level training.
As of end of day 15 Dec 2023 Rain has logged 133.1 road and trail miles. I very firmly believe that in addition to foundational training it takes REAL miles going somewhere (not just in circles in an arena) in order to make a good horse.

Rain - progress - working gate - being mounted - Stand-Stay - 7 Dec 2023
Rain - progress - working gate - being mounted - Stand-Stay - 7 Dec 2023
Rain the Spotted Saddle Horse started in training 18 Oct 2023 and this video was shot on 7 Dec 2023. She is not to the point yet where she can work the gate perfectly but she is trying and in an imperfect way she does get it done. You are also able to observe her on Stand-Stay a couple of times and standing still for mounting a couple of times. So this allows you to see progress at 7 weeks and 1 day of training. To get a horse "well started" requires a minimum of 3 months (generally 13 weeks) of training with the vast majority of that training occurring outside the arena gaining REAL life experience putting on REAL miles going somewhere. As of 7 Dec 2023 Rain has logged 117.3 miles on roads and trails while in training. For most horses these days that would require being shod all around but Rain currently has good enough hooves that she has done it barefoot on gravel and asphalt roads along with across stony fields.

Two button bucks - 15 Nov 2023
In the beginning 30 seconds of the video the two button bucks are standing behind a screen of brush - look carefully and you will see them. After that they are in the wide open and easy to see. The final segment I zoomed by phone camera in as far as it would go - and that sadly degraded image quality quite a bit.
So why are two very different sized button bucks together this time of year? Size difference suggests they are NOT twins but have different mothers. --- When the rut (breeding season) begins the does tend to run off their buck offspring - we suspect they do so to protect them from the breeding size bucks that will soon be looking for does to breed. This means that this time of year button bucks are on their own - fully weaned - and sometimes they find and team up with another button buck as these two have done.
How can I tell they are both button bucks - head shape - I could see the small antler buds as bumps on their skulls. Doe fawns don't have those bumps.

Can you spot the bedded doe fawn?
Test your visual detection skill by finding the bedded doe fawn in this video. She is likely 4-5 months old - no longer has spots.
Hint - look for parts of the deer - nose - eyes - backline - legs. Also look for small movements such as a ear twitch or a tail swish or a head moving to look around. She is there - she fed her way towards me then laid down bedded about 20 yards from me for over two hours. She got up three times during the two hours to stretch - turn a circle and lay back down.
Praise God for the beauty and wonder of His Creation. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!!

Rain's first ride in the Village - 4 Nov 2023
Rain was ponied by Avi through the village of Onsted on 20 Oct 2023. Today 4 Nov 2023 was the first time Rain was ridden through the village (this is what I mean when I say in the video it is Rain's first time in the village - first time being ridden in the village - but she was ponied through the village previously). She learned much and she has MUCH to learn. Her anxiety was substantially higher being ridden than it was being ponied next to my mare Avi.

Rain had a traumatic experience the last time she had a saddle on her back prior to this. So I work hard to help her see that this time around all is calm and right so she can have confidence.
I apologize that I rode out of camera view a number of times. I generally have no camera man - just my phone on a tripod aimed where I hope it is pointed so it captures what is happening visually and also what I am saying. It caught quite a bit of the session until I started riding at a walk - after that I managed to get out of view of the phone camera a number of times - sorry. But I do hope you can learn from the video nonetheless and I think you probably can.

The previous day during the first Start Right!! session it took about 40 minutes to fully prepare Rain for me to bareback mount and sit up on Rain the first time while she stood like a statue on a loose rein. The very next day in session two I was sitting up on her in just under 8 minutes after doing a rapid review to assess retention - or in other words to assess IF you taught the horse in a way it could understand clearly.

Face your fears - tarp - Rain the Spotted Saddle Horse - 23 Oct 2023
Working some more on facing your fears with Rain the Spotted Saddle Horse. This time using a small tarp. Note that I am NOT trying to scare her with the tarp but rather I am trying to assure her that the tarp will not eat her and thus she can tolerate it touching her and moving around and over her. You are not trying to scare the horse. You are trying to help the horse choose to control itself when it thinks something is scary.

Face your fears to overcome them - Rain the Spotted Saddle Horse - 21 Oct 2023
Rain the 4yr old Spotted Saddle Horse mare has a good bit of inexperience based fear. Horses view the world as if anything they are not familiar with could be a horse eating predator. In an environment rich with horse eating predators that is a survival advantage. In this actual environment with literally zero horse eating predators it is a serious liability. So we simultaneously work on increasing the horse's personal courage AND its trust in its master. Increasing its personal courage involves helping it face its fears and reason out that what they thought might eat them actually is not going to eat them. And going through many such experiences with the horse help it trust its master's judgment more and more when you tell it "it is not going to eat you."
When we first approached these cattle Rain put on the brakes saying by body language "50 ft is plenty close enough - that way if they try to eat me I have time to turn and run." When she got brave enough to come a bit closer the cattle moved a bit and she shot backwards a couple steps. And I calmly and persistently told her she had to keep facing what she was afraid of - she had to keep looking at those cattle she mistakenly thought were going to eat her. And bit by bit she started changing her thinking - started wondering if perhaps they were safe to approach and pretty soon she was nose to nose with them like they were old pals. She had to face her fear - really take a good hard closer and closer look at it - so that she could decide it was NOT nearly as scary as she thought it was - that is how she then chose to give away that particular fear.
Remember to intentionally, on purpose, learn of God each day by prayerfully reading, studying, and pondering upon God's word each day. Talk to God in prayer as your Heavenly Father who would like for you to be His friend. Find out what He would like you to do for Him as His friend and go and do it for Him as His friend. Yes very intentionally, very much on purpose, become the friend of God. And have a blessed day!!

Rain the Spotted Saddle Horse learning some basics - 20 Oct 2023
This is the very end of the initial part of today's training session with Rain the Spotted Saddle Horse. This is not where she started. This is not how we got from where she started to this point.
At the start I had to work to get Rain to let me curry her while she was eating even though she had watched me curry my mare Avi who is the herd boss. I then had to work using the horse training principle called "advance and retreat" to be able to catch Rain. Each time I caught her I would keep calmly saying "come to me" as I gently asked her to turn and face me where I had initially called her from - because eventually I want her to turn and face me when I call her and from that point I eventually want her to come to me when I call her. And you work to get there by Successive Approximation.

Talk to God in prayer as your Heavenly Father who would like for you to be His friend. Find out what He would like you to do for Him as His friend and go and do it for Him as His friend. Preparation for ponying - controlling movement via low stress herding - 19 Oct 2023
Correction - Rain is NOT a TWH as I mistakenly state in the video - she is a Spotted Saddle Horse. Sorry for any confusion I caused.
Ponying allows you to have a younger or less experienced horse learn very directly from a well trained horse you are riding. IF the horse you plan to pony off your well trained horse already knows how to lead well then to further prepare for ponying you need to teach it that it MUST yield to the horse it is being ponied off of. My favored way of teaching this is by doing low stress herding - controlling the movement of the herd (of two) so that the horse that will be ponied understands that the horse carrying a rider is the boss. Once they get that concept down then they very naturally per their instinct yield to that horse.
This isn't the greatest videography - I am literally shooting and narrating the video while riding my well trained mare, Avi, doing low stress herding of Rain just before teaching Rain to pony off Avi. So hopefully despite the less than stellar videography it will help you get more of an idea of this preparatory step towards ponying the horse.

Who is the herd boss Rain or Avi? - 19 Oct 2023
Who is the herd boss Rain or Avi - 19 Oct 2023
A good herd boss establishes their position by controlling herd movement and claiming their space and claiming their food, etc..

Ashur working gate - last day - 18 Oct 2023
Ashur working gate - last day - 18 Oct 2023
Training horses always involves some risk of injury (or even death) to the horse, the trainer, any spectators, equipment used, etc. - this risk is totally your own as you will be making your own judgements on what to do. As with any suggestions on any subject you must weigh them out for yourself and proceed accordingly - at your own risk.
Working a hinged gate without the rider losing contact with the gate is a practical application of lateral movement, calmly moving forward, stopping, backing, Stand-Stay. Ashur is well started but a long ways from being a finished horse so I work the gate to apply the skills he has been learning. If his owner continues using and applying these skills then one day Ashur will work any gate - including a gate he has never seen until right that moment - stone cold.
Remember to read, study, and ponder upon God's word each day and also pray each day to find out what God needs you to do today and then do it. And have a blessed day!!

Bandit the weanling TWH being line driven by Jack Griffiths, his owner - 16 Oct 2023
Bandit the weanling Tennessee Walking Horse (TWH) being line driven by Jack Griffiths, his owner - 16 Oct 2023
Bandit's line driving training started two weeks previous to this video. On the day this video was taken Bandit was headed back home. Before Bandit headed home Jack Griffes (trainer) did a line driving demo and then handed the lines to Jack Griffiths, Bandit's owner. He did a good job line driving that weanling for the very first time - give him a hand by liking this video.

Bandit the weanling TWH - line driving - 12 Oct 2023
Another line driving practice session with Bandit the weanling Tennessee Walking Horse (TWH). He is getting better at steering lightly most of the time at a walk. He is getting better at backing - yesterday I introduced turning completely around while backing and we do it again today which allowed us to continue practicing backing longer and in a more complex manner - back through the L, turn around while backing, back through the L the other way. I continued to teach "Gee" (right) and "Haw" (left) as voice commands for steering - this is important for a horse used to actually do work while driving particularly tight space work such as harrowing a small garden plot. You can see what I mean in this video of my late mare, Kate, harrowing our upper garden Spring 2010 https://rumble.com/v3mxowp-harrowing-the-upper-garden-with-real-horsepower-spring-2010.html And today for the first time while line driving I asked Bandit to go in his second gait, the Running Walk.
