We Do what we're Told (Milgram's 37) was the closing track to Peter Gabriel's best album, one of the very finest albums in the History of Sound and Truth, his 1986 Masterpiece, So! This song is about the Social/Psychological experiments of Stanley Milgram, a Yale professor who in 1961 had subjects administer electric shocks to a person if they answered a question wrong - at least, that's what they thought. The person being shocked was actually an actor who writhed in pain and agony, begging for release, as the shocks got larger. Milgram wanted to see if the subjects would administer the shocks when the experimenter told them to, even though they were causing apparent pain in the person. Almost all subjects administered the highest level of shock despite the actor pounding the wall in apparent agony. "In the main experiment, 63% percent of the participants were prepared to administer enough electricity to injure the person on the other end, which is staggering that anyone would do something like this simply because they were told to, by a perfect stranger, albeit one with a Lab Coat on...at first this seems a very negative thing, but, eventually, I was comforted that some had the strength to rebel against this Authority." '37' came from the number of subjects who administered the maximum shock to these 'Patients', who were actually Actors, screaming out in Agony and Begging for Release, as part of Dr. Milgram's experiments...37 out of the 40 people who were selected to take part in this Psychological Experiment, followed AUTHORITY, Blindly, and willingly shocked these 'Patients' with the maximum charge, which would have caused severe difficulties, had the shocks been real...again, the Test subjects did NOT know that the Electric Shocks weren't real... The Answer is yet another Brilliant track by one of the Best Roll the Rock Bands ever created, The Guess Who...the song is very, very interesting as it wasn't released until the early 2000's when their Classic 1970 album, Share the Land, was re-released on CD with 2 Bonus Tracks, The Answer and Palmyra...and this is bizarre to say the least, as they are BOTH incredible songs that any Rock band would be proud to have as part of their Catalogue... The story behind these two songs is that they were both written by Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman (one of the Best song-writing Duos in Music History) as part of the beginning sessions to the Share the Land album; however, soon after their completion, Randy Bachman left The Guess Who as part of a major rift in philosophical and Spiritual differences between he and Burton Cummings...and the two had always been the Heart and Soul of the Guess Who...as such, the two songs were shelved from the album's release and were replaced with new tracks from Kurt Winter, who replaced Bachman as part of the band... The Answer is a Brilliant track, with a very important lyric, as within it, Cummings is speaking to the fact that as he came clean to Randy Bachman about his Deep Connection to God, via Going Within himself, Cummings was ostracized by Bachman for using potentially Satanic practices such as Meditation, Breathing techniques, and even some natural Hallucinogenics, such as Psilocybin Mushrooms... The lyrics by Cummings point out the sad and fearful response from Bachman, as he denounced Cumming's practices and findings of going within himself by raising the Sacred Feminine, the Kundalini...thus; the song's three Verses focus on each of Cumming's three major beliefs about Ascension, one, that to achieve Heaven upon Earth, one must Raise their own Feminine and Christic energies upon the Superhighway of the Chakras, to illuminate one's own Crown Chakra, two, that Wisdom came from connecting to God within the Brain's Inner Room, or the 3rd Ventricle, by activating the Pineal Gland, and that three, the key to knowing God, was to first align oneself to Mother Nature, the Sacred Feminine, which the album, Share the Land, was entirely about...
