The most peaceful and picturesque place on Earth. Been there 1978, 1982, 1985, 2000, 2005. Early Spring or Fall every time. On this trip we stayed at the "Narrows" for a week of sunshine and 60's, just after they got 8" of snow. A sow Black Bear and her three cubs would come down to the lake every morning around sunrise for water. The day we entered the NP entrance the Ranger was packing up and leaving for the winter. She said to enjoy ourselves and we did for week of clear nights and gorgeous days. The "winds of change" started kicking up out of the West, as seen in the video, and soon snow would fall again so we packed it up down to The Black Hills SD for awhile. This is the beginning of what is known Today as "The Jeep Wave". Beginning in 1977 two people, not knowing each other, would cross paths, on a two lane road and wave to each other, palm up on the top of the steering wheel as they passed. This occurred as a "Jeep Thing". Both Jeeps were Green CJ-5's. This friendly wave continued up until September 6th 1981. On this September Day the two wavers decided to have a Beer that evening. They both decided they had allot in common, Love struck and got Married on May 29th 1982, the following spring. Their Honeymoon was an extended one month trip adventure to live in Alaska, and Phil and Rose's lives together began. We both got ourselves into good jobs within a couple of weeks and fell in Love with Alaska. In stead of saving our money for three years and relocating to NW Montana as originally planned, we wound up living the dream in Alaska for 23 years! We are now retired in Cherokee County South Carolina and enjoying our "3rd Life" as I call it. Fitting, as it brought us together we share an original brand new 79 Green CJ-5 as seen in the video. As the Jeep line goes, 1976-1979 remained the same with little cosmetic changes through those model years. Hike up to a Dahl Sheep area in Chugach Mountains, Alaska. We go real close this time as they got so comfortable with us, we sat on the ground 8' away from them. One started to fall asleep on a gorgeous summer day. The body of water is Turnagain Arm uptide from Cook Inlet. This is 20 minutes from Anchorage by way of Seward Highway.

We take the 4-wheelers up into the High Lands of the Caribou Creek Drainage, near Eureka, Alaska. Peaceful and quiet summer day with a hike to a central peak that reveals the Matanuska Glacier.

Warm weather and water rise during a sunny day leads to a safe exit. On warm spring days with Glacier and snow melt, rivers and creeks can rise and fall 18"-24" in a 24 hour period. Silt-laden rivers are tricky to cross because you can't see the bottom. The depths are deceiving: a huge braid may be only ankle deep, while a small, 3-foot-wide channel could be over your waist. You won't know the true depth until you're halfway across. Another issue is that the sides and bottom of the rivers are in a continual state of transformation. The silt does not allow for stability. Rocks are always shifting and can often be heard rolling in the water, unseen. During that fateful crossing, our ford across literally reshaped the river. New braids formed, and the channel where we had our trouble split into three variations. Watch the ending where the Jeep resurrection occurs the following spring right after the ice goes out. VHS Video Converted Digitally to MPEG4. There about 1985 coming out from a back country camping trip at the Knik Glacier we found this fiasco going on at Jim Creek due to the thin ice during "Break Up" on a warm Sunday afternoon. The video rescue ends with a surprise to some. All the ice seen is called "overflow" from the pressure of water overflowing onto the existing ice. This overflow can often be 100's of yards in all directions. Due to the build up over 6 plus months, the ice expansions will build up higher and higher, and widen more and more over the months due to the temperature variations. Some place you see will have five feet of ice solid enough to drive over, other places of the ice pack will show flowing water that might only be 4 inches deep or five feet deep as you see here. You don't know where the main channels have moved to flowing out to the Knik River. We got two feet of snow over night, middle of winter in Alaska Buck and Tye our two Chocolate Labs loved the Snow every year when we lived in Alaska. We would always use tennis balls for them to retrieve and they usually found them. I made this a few years ago and our Web Site on the video is dead now.

Beautiful Prince William Sound in South Central Alaska. Memorial Day weekend Four days exploring and not a cloud in the sky the entire time. On this day Mike hooked into a sizable Halibut while casting a Pixie (Salmon Lure) while on the fishing bridge on top of the boat. Normally fisherman will shoot these fish to prevent broken legs before the fish are brought onto a deck. The Prized Halibut Fishing Derby in Whittier, AK was on for the weekend and disqualification resulted if your entry submission had any gun shot wounds. All of this was unfolding as the strong tide was on it's way out and the Cabin Cruiser was anchored taking us us further away in the raft.
