The crucifixion of Jesus occurred in 1st-century Judaea, most likely in AD 30 or AD 33. After carrying out the sentence Pilate handed him over to soldiers.[5][6][7] The soldiers led Jesus to Golgotha and crucified him there beside two criminals, affixing a sign to his cross that declared him "King of the Jews." While on the cross he made exclamations that are recorded differently among the gospels. According to the synoptic gospels, darkness fell during the afternoon and Jesus died by the ninth hour of the day (at around 3:00 p.m.). Among the eyewitnesses named in the gospels are Mary Magdalene, Mary, mother of Jesus, Mary of Clopas, and Salome, often identified as the wife of Zebedee. Collectively referred to as the Passion, Jesus's suffering and redemptive death by crucifixion are the central aspects of Christian theology concerning the doctrines of salvation and atonement.
