However Liz Truss, his replacement as Prime Minister, has also been forced to step down after her plans for tax cuts and unfunded borrowing led to turmoil in the financial markets. Mr Johnson had been campaigning to return as Prime Minister but has now admitted that he would not be able to unite his party. His decision means that Rishi Sunak, the former Chancellor, is now seen as the leading candidate to be the next Prime Minister.

Massive Russian strikes hit Ukraine grid Russia has launched a "new massive strike" targeting Ukraine's energy grid, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said. He added that the attacks were on a "very wide" scale, hitting regions in Ukraine's west, centre, south and east.
