The Martin B-26 Marauder is an American twin-engined medium bomber that saw extensive service during World War II. The B-26 was built at two locations: Baltimore, Maryland, and Omaha, Nebraska, by the Glenn L. Martin Company.
First used in the Pacific Theater of World War II in early 1942, it was also used in the Mediterranean Theater and in Western Europe.
After entering service with the United States Army aviation units, the aircraft quickly received the reputation of a "widowmaker" due to the early models' high accident rate during takeoffs and landings. This was because the Marauder had to be flown at precise airspeeds, particularly on final runway approach or when one engine was out. The unusually high 150 mph (241 km/h) speed on short final runway approach was intimidating to many pilots who were used to much slower approach speeds, and whenever they slowed to speeds below those stipulated in the manual, the aircraft would often stall and crash.[2]
The B-26 became a safer aircraft once crews were re-trained, and after aerodynamics modifications (an increase of wingspan and wing angle-of-incidence to give better takeoff performance, and a larger vertical stabilizer and rudder).[3] The Marauder ended World War II with the lowest loss rate of any U.S. Army Air Forces bomber.[4]
A total of 5,288 were produced between February 1941 and March 1945; 522 of these were flown by the Royal Air Force and the South African Air Force. By the time the United States Air Force was created as an independent military service separate from the United States Army in 1947, all Martin B-26s had been retired from U.S. service. After the Marauder was retired the unrelated Douglas A-26 Invader then assumed the "B-26" designation which led to confusion between the two aircraft.

The Grumman F6F Hellcat is an American carrier-based fighter aircraft of World War II. Designed to replace the earlier F4F Wildcat and to counter the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero, it was the United States Navy's dominant fighter in the second half of the Pacific War. In gaining that role, it prevailed over its faster competitor, the Vought F4U Corsair, which had problems with visibility and carrier landings.
Powered by a 2,000 hp (1,500 kW) Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp, the same powerplant used for both the Corsair and the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighters, the F6F was an entirely new design, but it still resembled the Wildcat in many ways. Some military observers tagged the Hellcat as the "Wildcat's big brother".
The F6F made its combat debut in September 1943, and was best known for its role as a rugged, well-designed carrier fighter, which was able to outperform the A6M Zero and help secure air superiority over the Pacific theater. In total, 12,275 were built in just over two years.
Hellcats were credited with destroying a total of 5,223 enemy aircraft while in service with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm (FAA)This was more than any other Allied naval aircraft.] After the war, Hellcats were phased out of front-line service in the US, but radar-equipped F6F-5Ns remained in service as late as 1954 as night fighters

Flight Charecteristics of a P-38

Made by Lockheed during WWII to promote the P-38 Lightning and introduce it to Army Air Force pilots, P-38 FLIGHT CHARACTERISTICS gives an overview of this vaunted aircraft. Interestingly, the film begins with an animated discussion of how to bail out of the aircraft, owing to "hangar talk" that suggested it would be a widow maker. The film features a number of Lockheed test pilots including chief engineering test pilot Lionel Burgess, giving insights into how to handle the P-38. It also contains a number of cartoons, possibly created by the Disney Studios, to illustrate its points.
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a World War II American piston-engined fighter aircraft. Developed to a United States Army Air Corps requirement, the P-38 had distinctive twin booms and a central nacelle containing the cockpit and armament. Allied propaganda claimed it had been nicknamed the fork-tailed devil by the Luftwaffe and "two planes, one pilot" by the Japanese, the P-38 was used for interception, dive bombing, level bombing, ground attack, night fighting, photo reconnaissance, radar and visual pathfinding for bombers and evacuation missions and extensively as a long-range escort fighter when equipped with drop tanks under its wings.
The P-38 was used most successfully in the Pacific Theater of Operations and the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations as the aircraft of America's top aces, Richard Bong (40 victories), Thomas McGuire (38 victories) and Charles H. MacDonald (36 victories). In the South West Pacific theater, the P-38 was the primary long-range fighter of United States Army Air Forces until the appearance of large numbers of P-51D Mustangs, toward the end of the war.
The P-38 was unusually quiet for a fighter, the exhaust muffled by the turbo-superchargers. It was extremely forgiving and could be mishandled in many ways but the rate of roll in the early versions was too slow for it to excel as a dogfighter. The P-38 was the only American fighter aircraft in production throughout American involvement in the war, from Pearl Harbor to Victory over Japan Day. At the end of the war, orders for 1,887 more were cancelled.

Boeing B-29 Superfortress

The Boeing B-29 Superfortress is an American four-engined propeller-driven heavy bomber, designed by Boeing and flown primarily by the United States during World War II and the Korean War. Named in allusion to its predecessor, the B-17 Flying Fortress, the Superfortress was designed for high-altitude strategic bombing, but also excelled in low-altitude night incendiary bombing, and in dropping naval mines to blockade Japan. B-29s dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the only aircraft ever to drop nuclear weapons in combat.
One of the largest aircraft of World War II, the B-29 was designed with state-of-the-art technology, which included a pressurized cabin, dual-wheeled tricycle landing gear, and an analog computer-controlled fire-control system that allowed one gunner and a fire-control officer to direct four remote machine gun turrets. The $3 billion cost of design and production (equivalent to $45 billion today),[3] far exceeding the $1.9 billion cost of the Manhattan Project, made the B-29 program the most expensive of the war.[4][5] The B-29's advanced design allowed it to remain in service in various roles throughout the 1950s. The type was retired in the early 1960s, after 3,970 of them had been built. A few were also used as flying television transmitters by the Stratovision company. The Royal Air Force flew the B-29 as the Washington until 1954.
The B-29 was the progenitor of a series of Boeing-built bombers, transports, tankers, reconnaissance aircraft, and trainers. For example, the re-engined B-50 Superfortress Lucky Lady II became the first aircraft to fly around the world non-stop, during a 94-hour flight in 1949. The Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter airlifter, which was first flown in 1944, was followed in 1947 by its commercial airliner variant, the Boeing Model 377 Stratocruiser. This bomber-to-airliner derivation was similar to the B-17/Model 307 evolution. In 1948, Boeing introduced the KB-29 tanker, followed in 1950 by the Model 377-derivative KC-97. A line of outsized-cargo variants of the Stratocruiser is the Guppy / Mini Guppy / Super Guppy, which remain in service with NASA and other operators. The Soviet Union produced 847 Tupolev Tu-4s, an unlicensed reverse-engineered copy of the B-29. Twenty B-29s remain as static displays, but only two, FIFI and Doc, still fly.

The life of a glacier couldn't be more straightforward, right? Snow accumulates at the high end of a glacier, and the ice that the snow turns into flows downhill until it melts, evaporates, or falls into the sea. Well, it turns out that a biography of your average glacier is more eventful than that, as you'll discover when you follow the journey of a single snowflake as it takes a ride through a glacier, a process that can take as long as 30,000 years to complete.

This late 1930s-early 1940s black-and-white WWII British military training film (B.191 C.191) shows segments focusing on “shooting to kill” using a Bren, rifle, anti-tank rifle, or Tommy gun, which are shown (:15-1:24). Bren and Rifle. A demonstration of when to fire with the Bren and rifle is given. Troops wait in a trench. A Range Card is shown. Enemy troops emerge from the trees. Troops fire before the enemy is within range and a shell is fired at the troops. The scene is re-enacted. The Corporal checks his Range Card to give the signal when the enemy is close enough to kill (1:25-8:04). Anti-tank rifle. Multiple tanks move past the camera. An anti-tank rifle is shown. An officer uses a pointer to explain the angle of impact needed to penetrate a German tank. A soldier with an anti-tank gun is camouflaged by surrounding bushes. A fellow soldier uses binoculars to spot a moving tank. Firing too soon gives their position away. The scene is reenacted. By waiting, three shots pierce the tank’s side and it smokes (8:05-13:35). The Tommy Gun. The Thompson submachine gun is shown against a backdrop of war footage. The patrol leader, holding a Tommy gun, walks past a brick building. He hides, signaling that enemy troops are walking up the road. Firing too soon, he is killed. The re-enactment shows the Corporal waiting to fire until the enemy is within range, killing five enemy soldiers (13:36-17:19). Firing against German Planes. A soldier uses a rifle to successfully fire against a German plane as sights are set at 500 yards. A soldier uses a Bren gun to fire against an airplane. A platoon marches. A soldier blows a whistle to take cover as enemy planes are spotted. The soldiers fire when the planes are too high, making themselves targets. A German plane crashes and dark smoke rises, brought down by a platoon who waited for the plane to dive. A Bren gun is used to shot too soon at an enemy plane, resulting in bombs being dropped on the platoon. The re-enactment shows the enemy plane seeing tracks and turning to drop bombs. The soldier waits to fire. The burning plane wreck is shown (17:18-23:42). In the Attack. Offensively, a diagram of the area shows German and British positions. The attacking soldiers fire too soon, resulting in death. The re-enacted situation shows them waiting until the enemy soldiers are close enough to kill (23:43-28:41). The Anti-Tank Two-Pounder. The Ordnance QF-2 pounder gun is shown. A single sentry and over-ambitious troops fire a visible anti-tank two-pounder too soon at approaching enemy tanks. The re-enactment shows a heavily camouflaged 2-pounder and troops who wait to fire. The Corporal makes nine chalk marks celebrating success (28:42-32:21). Recap. The four weapons are used as troops wait to fire in each scenario. The motto of “hold your fire and shoot to kill” is emphasized (32:22-34:43). This documentary short film depicts various situations in which B-24 bombers, damaged in combat, may be landed safely despite the destruction of various landing-related equipment on the aircraft. Footage of several damaged aircraft landing safely is accompanied by descriptions of the damage and of the means used by pilots to counter the effects of that damage.

In the United States Marine Corps, every Marine is a Rifleman and must go through the USMC Rifle Qualification test.
However, not all Marines go into the specialty of Infantry rifleman, but every single Marine has the same basic knowledge.
Marine recruits show up to boot camp with a wide variety of knowledge about weapons.
Some recruits are well-versed in handling weapons, while others never had the opportunity.
Fortunately, the Marines Corps train all Marines to meet the same level of expectations for combat.

U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30 M1 (Garand)
The M1 Garand is a full blown combat rifle with a maximum range of 3,200 meters and maximum effective range of 400 meters.....or the greatest distance at which the weapon can be expected to fire accurately to inflict casualties or damage.
Fully loaded with 8 round clip, cleaning kit in butt stock, sling and with stock of dense GI issue wood the M1 weighed in at 11-1/4 lbs.
The M1 came into production in 1936 using the 30.06 rifle cartridge.
The M1 was the designated service rifle of World War II for the United States Military. It was designed for semi-automatic fire using a spring steel clip containing 8 rounds. This is where the term "clip" originated. All other rifles used a detachable or fixed magazine.
The M1 Garand was designed for long range accuracy i.e. battle zero was set for any target less than 200 yards. It was the only rifle that had fully adjustable i.e. windage and elevation, rear sights. The original rear sight of the M1 would not hold adjustments very well, so a locking bar was added in late 1942 which could be tightened after sights were set.
The US Rifle M1 was the first semiautomatic rifle to be the standard small arm of the US Military, and the first semiautomatic rifle to be adopted by a major military power. It was the product of a genuine genius, John Cantius Garand.
While the M1 Rifle was never officially referred to as the Garand, it is known by no other name so widely. First adopted in 1936, the M1 Rifle served the US in World War II, Korea, a host of "police actions" and interventions, and, in the hands of allies, in the Vietnam War.
To many the M1 Rifle has a classic elegance and grace characteristic of a bygone era, when steel was forged in white heat and walnut was carefully shaped for both form and function.
"There will never be again such a rifle, so brimming with the genius of an individual mind, so well constructed to outlive us all, so sculpted as to ask the hand to caress."
"In my opinion, the M1 Rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised."

“Roving The Mediterranean” is a black-and-white circa 1940 film that opens with a shakedown cruise of one of the United States Navy’s latest cruisers from the Atlantic Ocean into the Mediterranean Sea. The ship pulls into port at Gibraltar on Spain’s southern coast at mark 01:13 as sailors are shown visiting spots of local interest including climbing (rather unsuccessfully) the famed Rock of Gibraltar at mark 02:05. By mark 04:23 the crew is on to Tunis in North Africa to visit the ruins, and then to the beauty of Venice at mark 06:04 where gondolas are shown sailing up to the naval vessel in search of customers. The sailors gather at St. Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco) in the center of town at mark 07:16before boarding another gondola for a trip down a canal. “Words don’t begin to describe it so we’ll let the Venetian atmosphere speak for itself,” says the narrator at mark 07:55 as we see footage from along the waterway until the film reaches its conclusion.

Episode 61 of “Yesterday’s Newsreel” provided viewers “television highlights of the news of yesteryear” by providing vintage clips of famous people and events from the first half of the 20th century. This episode opens with a look at “The Roosevelt Family” (mark 00:30), with a visit to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, and their family in 1932, and follows FDR through his 1933 inauguration (mark 01:05) and leisure time spent on the water — one of his favorite pastimes. We see the 1937 wedding of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Jr. to socialite Ethel du Pont (mark 02:40) and recall the military service of Elliott Roosevelt during World War II as well as FDR Jr., who was awarded a Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart during the war. A frail FDR is shown at Yalta Conference, and at mark 04:22 we see his flag-draped casket being escorted to his final resting place. An early 1920s “Lighthouse Wedding” is revisited at mark 05:07, as are personalities from 1922 (mark 05:55) including entertainers visiting WWI veterans at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC, and actor Raymond Hitchcock. A fire that destroyed a Massachusetts lodge in 1922 is shown starting at mark 07:22, followed by an early 1920’s “Railroad Bath” at mark 08:00 — an elaborate train-washing system in Paris. Aviation circa 1923 is shown beginning at mark 08:37 with dramatic scenes of famed wing walker Ivan Unger, followed by the 1921 fashion scene (mark 10:05) and a US Navy rowing race from that same year (mark 11:07).

Walter Frentz worked as Adolf Hitler's cameraman from 1938 to 1945. Filming Hitler1 throughout Nazi Germany's war effort, Frentz enjoyed privileged access to Nazi leaders. His footage appeared in many German newsreels and propaganda films.2 In the early 1930s, famous director Leni Riefenstahl3 recruited Frentz to work as her cameraman. She valued his skill with a handheld camera. He created idealized, dynamic, and powerful pictures of the Third Reich. Beginning in 1938, Frentz traveled throughout Europe to film Hitler, sites of German occupation, and German troops at war.
The featured film is an excerpt from newsreel footage shot by Frentz on June 27, 1940. The clip shows Hitler learning about the fall of France.4 This clip shows how Frentz portrayed movement in his shots and played with perspective. Filming Hitler on a moving train, Frentz focused on the excitement of German crowds in Munich instead of just filming Hitler. Frentz believed that depicting Hitler from behind and showing the scene from the leader's perspective would make the scene more exciting to viewers.

This episode of the “Yesterday’s Newsreel” — an early TV show that used footage from the defunct General News library — offers the viewer “television highlights of the news of yesteryear” by providing vintage clips of famous people and events from the first half of the 20th century. This episode opens with “The Japanese-Chinese War” of the 1930s (mark 00:32) and scenes of combat footage and a look of Japanese advancement including one on the Great Wall of China (mark 01:35) as well as Shanghai (mark 04:30). The narrator boasts China’s resilience, however, and as Chiang Kai-shek, leader of Republic of China, is shown at mark 05:00, we are told how “the ultimate fate of China remains a mystery.” Mark 05:15 takes the viewer to the Louvre in 1927 (mark 05:23) and a discussion of the painting’s 1911 theft, as well as the creation of multiple copies and whether Leonardo Da Vinci’s original resides in the museum. The personalities of 1924 are visited at mark 06:06including author Arthur Conan Doyle and “the American Sherlock Holmes” William J. Burns during a visit to New York City, silent film cowboy William S. Hart, and Ethel Barrymore Colt (daughter of Ethel Barrymore). Come mark 07:30 the film looks at Sgt. Alvin York, one of the most decorated US Army soldiers during World War I and a Medal of Honor recipient, at home in Tennessee, and at mark 08:43 looks at 1926’s “Fashions of the Day.” A look at 1920’s aviation comes at mark 09:45 with a gigantic biplane inaugurating the Brussels to Paris route -- possibly the first airline passenger service in the world -- while mark 10:20 takes the viewer to 1926 and a look at Frank Morley, a Harvard University student who was a member of the British Oxford-Cambridge lacrosse team, and a University of Southern California football game versus the University of California.
