Kingdom Business
If we're entrepreneurs, we ply our craft in a trade or a business for gain. There's really no reason to go into business unless you expect to make a profit. And the things that we do in our businesses, no matter what our business is, we do to profit from those activities. But another thing that we should look at, which I believe is inherent, if not explicitly stated, is that business should be transformational for the clients and the customers that we serve. Creating a work product or providing a service, is transformational and biblical. Running a business It is one way that we serve others. And it's also one way that we influence others. Pastors don’t talk about how to do business for the kingdom of God in the marketplace. But if we look at scripture, we discover that the gospel was spread via the marketplace by businesspeople and tradespeople — entrepreneurs.

Uncommon Forgiveness
Some parameters for forgiving people. Forgiveness doesn’t depend on the other person, or on your feelings. Why apologizing isn’t asking forgiveness or repenting.

How To Occupy
We have a greater purpose than simply looking out for ourselves. We should be thinking about culture. And my observation that our culture, especially in the United States, is what it is and going the direction it's going. because the church — people in the church, the body of Christ, the ecclesia — has not made a stand and pushed back. Instead, we've gone along for the sake of keeping the peace, or not wanting to rock the boat, or wanting to be liked and accepted.
Being likable isn’t what we’re here for, is it?
We’re here to occupy — to do business until Jesus Christ returns. I share some insights from the gospels of Matthew and Luke about the topic of impacting culture by occupying — doing business.

Are You Offended?
I believe that scripture is clear on us believers being offended at the right things, and responding — not reacting but responding — in a godly way. Taking offense at something is a choice.
We as believers can and will cause others — including our clients, coleagues, and customers — to take offense. But what bothers us is up to us. What we fear is up to us.
This is a word of exhortation and encouragement in a time of increased trouble, when it’s “trendy” to be offended at just about everything.
------------------------------
I created the Occuprise Network around the idea that we as entrepreneurs, solorpreneurs, and creativepreneurs are uniquely positioned to impact the business, government and policy sectors (mountains) of culture. We’re carrying our own banners rather than helping other carry theirs. We can do this directly and personally through our work, investing the resources and wisdom the Lord gives us, following the strategies and tactics Holy Spirit shows us, and winsomely win territory.
My hope is that entrepreneurs, creatives, and freelancers will benefit from a practical approach to scripture, sharing the gospel message, and occupying until Jesus Christ returns.

Is the Sinner's Prayer Necessary For Salvation?
Where does the sinner’s prayer come in? It’s not in scripture.
Evangelical church services, and many charismatic church services, end with an altar call and recitation of a sinner’s prayer, in which a person acknowledges their sinful state and need for Jesus’ redemption. They ask Jesus into their hearts.
But is saying or reciting a sinner's prayer necessary for salvation?
As someone who's never prayed a sinner's prayer but believes in Jesus Christ as Lord and savior, I set out the answer this question. I investigate the origins of the sinner's prayer tradition and what scripture says about belief and righteousness.

You Cannot Deceive God
When reading in Jeremiah chapter 42 I was struck with how easily we can approach God with deceitful motives. We pray, asking God for a spiritual download, for wisdom, for help, to know what to do, but we may already have decided to go a certain direction. I observe, and I've done this too, that we approach God as our friend, but we can easily forget that He's holy. He holds us accountable. While we can boldly go to His throne, we need to go with pure motives. In this video I share my conclusions and several scriptures that relate.

Can You Be Christian And Progressive?
With apologies to groups such as Progressive Christianity, I make the claim that Christianity is not social justice, self-improvement, or socialism. The idea behind progressivism is change, and the essentials of Christianity do not change.
Can one be politically and socially progressive and also follow the teachings of Christ in fact?
Does everything you align and agree to, does it align and agree with Scripture? If you align yourself with things that don’t agree with scripture, are you divided? Do you use scripture as the basis to test the veracity of everything else?

Seeking First
Rather than take this out of the book of Matthew and Jesus’ sermon on the mount as is usual, the basis for this reflection is out of Second Peter. In chapter 1 of his letter we find him discussing the concept of increase, and increase through seeking the kingdom first and drawing close to God as first priority.
As we get to know Jesus better, as we increase in our relationship with Him, we're increasingly able to live godly, morally excellent lives. It should be our aim to come close to Christ as our first matter of business, since everything else comes along on the basis of that.

How can you believe truth if you don't know what is true?
How can you speak truth if you don't know what is true?
Where do we find what's true? And how do we know it's true?
For the believer, the ekklesia, truth comes from God. He reveals it in His word.
So to speak truth, we need to know what His word says.
In this talk I make the case for the Bible as our foundation for life and work. Keep your eyes on it daily.

Value For Value
We as believing entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, and creativepreneurs are uniquely positioned to impact the business and government and sectors (mountains) of our culture. We’re carrying our own banners rather than helping others carry theirs. We can do this directly and personally through our work, investing the resources and wisdom the Lord gives us, following the strategies and tactics Holy Spirit shows us, and winsomely win territory.
In this presentation I focus on the fact that churches in general don’t equip their entrepreneurial members to prosper and influence their marketplaces. With goals of church growth and bringing non-believers into churches, I believe we've missed the mark. Jesus told us to go... As freelancers and business owners where we go is into the marketplace, and we can influence our clients and customers with the gospel.
My hope is that my fellow entrepreneurs, creatives, and freelancers will benefit from a practical approach to sharing truth through their businesses.

What's the Purpose of Design Process Journals?
I encourage my design students to embrace the concept of creating a process journal as a companion to their design development and to not approach them as busy work or unnecessary.
In fact, I more than encourage them. I require them.
Keeping a record of your research and discovery, notes, ideas, color palette explorations, challenges, and decisions is useful for a variety of reasons, including understanding your own creative process. Plus, documenting your process "proves" your work is your own, and how you brought it into being.

This is not an instructional drawing tutorial, but you'll be able to observe how I begin and build a portrait from scratch. This is the order I generally follow, starting with structure, larger shapes and then work into the detailed refinements.
Place the center vertical and horizontal axes and determine the position of the top of the head and the base of the chin.
Place the structural lines.
Position the eye line (axis)
Analyze the shape of the eyes
Position the eyebrows
Shape the nose
Mouth: analyzing width, shape, angles, proportion
Framing the face using big shapes: hair , neck and shoulders, ears
Refining contours and building out planes using shading
My approach to drawing is to analyze what I see — using my whole brain, and comparing and contrasting shape, scale, proportion, and direction.
I'm not too worried about style. I draw loosely — known as loose sketching — which results in a certain energy and vitality in the figure than carefully rendered academic technique yields.

Color Theory 12-Hue Circle Assignment Demo
Describes the process for creating a (hopefully) accurate color wheel based on Johannes Itten's 12-hue color system using opaque gouache on bristol paper. This involves color mixing and results in perception training to be able to judge (visually discern) colors and what hues and non-chroma colors are in a given color. This is the first assignment in my basic design course: Color Theory Principles and Practice.
Three Practical Color Systems For Designers
I compare and contrast three practical color systems used by designers in a variety of sectors.
The discussion includes the 12-Hue Color System established by Johannes Itten, the 10-Hue Color System created by Munsell, and the Natural Color System (NCS).
What do these three color systems have in common, and how are they different?
This video is part of my full digital course, Color Theory: Principles and Practice.

Sketchbook Session Draw A Face From Photographic Reference
In this excerpt from a live independent instruction session, I share how to draw a portrait of a young man based on photographic reference. This is one of my sketchbook sessions using pencil and paper.
This is not an academic drawing tutorial, and it's not a refined, finished drawing. My approach to drawing is to analyze what I see — using my whole brain, and comparing and contrasting shape, scale, proportion, and direction.
I began by setting up the horizontal and vertical axes for the face. Then I positioned landmarks based on what I observed in the photo. From there I "fleshed out" the features.

Colors Basics: What is color relativity
A discussion and demonstration of the principle of relative color and human perception. I use color swatches to demonstrate how we perceive the same color appearing differently based on its environment. (Tip: We can also make two different colors appear the same or similar using the same principles in reverse.) Color relativity is a principle put forth by Josef Albers, and relates to the 7 color contrasts proposed by Johannes Itten. Color relativity also occurs with digital color.
