“Tuttle Twins” is a new indie cartoon making its way on the scenes, but it’s different from other works I’ve covered, even indie works. What exactly makes it so different? Because it’s a cartoon that goes out of its way to teach the valuable lessons of FREEDOM and ‘MERICA!! … Well, not really “‘Merica”, per se, but it’s obvious that the cartoon has a specific political statement to make. But as we know, all artistic expression is political in some ways, and we also all know that only a certain political view gets amplified by the establishment entertainment industry these days. That being said, I’m perfectly fine with cartoons that have a message to send. The question is: Is it good, or is it preachy schlock? And how do you get your message across without becoming schlocky? The time has come to defy gravity! And also for Velicia to cosplay the most iconic witch of modern-day pop-culture: The Wicked Witch of the West! White Diamond was first introduced to us as a force of nature, a mighty godlike being of pure light and kindly malevolence, but eventually Steven got to her and made her reveal her true “colors”, as it were. What can be learned from a villainess such as White Diamond? Simple: even the most seemingly unstoppable and infallible adversaries have a flaw that can be exploited. Velicia is cosplaying yet again! This time it’s Queen Tyr’ahnee the martian queen from the famed Duck Dodgers! Specifically, this week I’m going to be diving into Tyr’ahnee’s bizarre and rather unhealthy romantic obsession with the bumbling Duck Dodgers, and what one can learn from a character who is seemingly strong, intelligent, and hyper-competent in every other aspect of her life and yet gets sucked into the pitfall of obsession. And furthermore, how a creator can use such a fatal flaw and inject it into their own work to spice up the story they wish to tell. The late great Eartha Kitt is one of my all-time favorite voice actors, and if I lived in a perfect world, I would have my own cartoon character Velicia be voiced by her. Eartha Kitt had a rich career, spanning far beyond her voice acting. She was a prominent singer, an actor on broadway, a film and television star, and even a staunch activist in a time where such a thing could ruin your life. Her voice acting only really picked up at the very end of her career and her life. Despite this, she was wildly successful, and I believe it’s because she led a vibrant and rich life that she could portray so brilliantly in the characters she voiced. Though It’s not possible for Velicia to ever be voiced by Eartha Kitt, I want the spirit of what she was able to exude to be infused in Velicia in some way. Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers had one of the best examples of the archetypal villain: Rita Repulsa. I mean, this woman had it all. The evil lair, the evil minions, the evil laugh, even the evil catchphrase. So it’s no surprise that I’d steal all that goodness and inject it into my own villainous character Velicia from my cartoon Schneeevil! In this episode of Velicia Cosplays, it’s Dr. Mrs. The Monarch’s turn! And what does the Mrs. and Velicia have in common? Watch and find out! It’s the voice. Yeah, both characters are voiced by men. I voice Velicia and Doc Hammer voices Dr. Mrs. The Monarch. I’ve always been a fan of mismatched things in media, especially when it’s done smartly. Anything from inappropriate music playing while something horrific is happening, or characters with unusual voices. When done right, it’s a crazy reveal that just happens to work. Once again Velicia is cosplaying, and this time it’s Wuya from Xiaolin Showdown. Wuya was the original inspiration for Velicia. Even though in the Yzma video I said that I got most of Vel’s personality from Yzma, the catalyst was all Wuya. You see, with me banging on about Wuya being #bestwaifu, I thought to myself “Why not make a Wuya show?” Naturally I couldn’t just rip off of Wuya, but to make a show about a crazy space witch was something I could do, and thus Velicia was born.
