It started out with Angela having an interest in getting to know engine anatomy for future repairs while traveling. She and Chris are tinkering with a 1982 yanmar 3qm with supposedly 990hrs. Two days ago, she opened up the engine room on SV Covenant, a 33 foot Hans Christian. She started with a serpentine belt repair, then noticed the stuffing box dripping a drop of raw water per second while the engine was off. There's quite a but of debate surrounding the concept of the right amount of drip when running the motor. She was onboard several days this week and heard the bilge working and noticed after opening the engine room the engine bilge was filled with goo. It ends (hopefully) with what should have been a simple stuffing box adjustment. So far, we have not had marina members with tools big enough to fit the stuffing box and lock nut. Off to the hardware store for Chris.

Today's event was the 2023 Gurganus One Design Regatta, which was the third race in the Clark Cup Series. There were approximately 61 registered boats, a parking layout, a launch sequence, meals, swag, heat, lots of water, tons of RC support, karaoke fun and more! A really well run event and compliments all around to the host club volunteers who really nailed this one!

We are tackling a new maintenance project on our sailboat Covenant, a 1982 33' Hans Christian 33t. We noticed wood decay about 9 months ago so we wrapped the area to try to keep it dry until we could get to it. In the meantime, it seems the rot spread and we realized we should have jumped on this project much earlier. Again, we hesitated once we saw decay in both vertical pieces, plus a little 5x5" block that almost sat on the sole of the boat and appeared to be a stop block for the bowsprit. If that was the case, then we would not want to remove anything until that area was supported and secure. Check out this short clip where we remove the decaying wood and lay eyes on the large cavity caused by old, rotting wood. #sailing
