Mary Boffa's hobby was her sprawling, close-knit family. She had 3 sisters and nearly 30 first cousins. They provided plenty to do on weekends. When she was growing up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, there was always a cousin to play with. Her father was a blue-collar worker at Western Electric and her mother was a school cafeteria worker. At age 45, Ms. Boffa was an associate vice president for Marsh & McLennan, the financial services conglomerate in 1 World Trade Center.

"It was like she came from some place where you were supposed to talk to everyone," said Brian Flannery, her husband of three months. The couple commuted together every day from their home in Middle Village, Queens — he to a brokerage firm in Midtown, while she headed downtown to Sandler O'Neill & Partners, where she was a sales associate.

After all, her day had started at 5 a.m., with the NordicTrack workout, then the frenzy to roust, dress and feed their three little guys ‹ ages 2, 5 and 7 ‹ and get herself to work, two days a week in the city and one at home, as a systems analyst at Marsh & McLennan. On city days, she arrived early so she could jam in a lot and leave on the dot.

As a full-time working woman and a mother of two children, Winnie did not attain her goal of obtaining a college degree until a few years ago. Her dream came true in the fall of 1999 when she received her bachelor’s degree with honors in accounting from Bernard M. Brauch College.

She was a small-town girl with her sights set on the world. She grew up in Stanley, N.D., population 1,000, but eventually traveled to China, studied in England and hiked on her own around Peru. Ann N. Nelson loved grand plans and had little patience for details — a quality that sometimes left hungry dinner guests in the living room while she was still reading recipes off the back of boxes in the kitchen.

Just 10 minutes before the first plane struck the World Trade Center, Valerie Joan Hanna called Glenn Hughes, her husband of 29 years, to remind him "to take care of the animals," he recalls. That would be Ramses the goat, Quito the llama and the flock of assorted ducks, chickens and turkeys they had been assembling on their 23-acre farm in Dryden, N.Y., near Ithaca.
The couple moved there from Brooklyn two years ago because "she couldn't take the city anymore," he said.

Though Ryjova had been with the company for the past year, her friend Deborah Monroe said Ryjova wanted to work closer to home to spend more time with her husband, Vasily, and their two young sons.

Luck, in the form of an immigration lottery, brought Sophia B. Addo to the United States from Ghana in 1996: a teacher of schoolchildren in Africa, she decided to take a chance and come to New York to further her own education. But getting into school here was not as uncomplicated as winning a lottery. She had her working papers, and landed a succession of housekeeping jobs while she improved her English. Already having passed an oral exam, she was due to take a written test on Sept. 12 to see if she was entitled to a G.E.D. certificate and college eligibility.

Nathaniel Webb and his cousins picked his grandfather's still-green apples anyway.
When the old man saw that the apples were missing he demanded to know who had disobeyed him. "We didn't tell the truth," said Delores Matthews, Mr. Webb's cousin.

Andrew Brunn was a tremendous pile of a man, 6 foot 2 and heavyset, and intensely private. He did not bother to tell his buddies in the Air National Guard of his computer studies or even of his marriage. He made little mention of his move to the Fire Department from the Police Department.
