Southern Outer Banks Life ~ is a Special Broadcast Service (www.SOBXlife.sbs). I am a digital journalist educated at the Knight School of Journalism at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge and the NBCU News Academy in New York. I create videos of the Southern Outer Banks (and surrounding areas) in North Carolina and also create video commentary on local news events and activities. WARNING/DISCLAIMER: The content featured on this channel will rub some people the wrong way. Some may even question the legality of photographing people in public. However, videos posted here are 100% legal in accordance with United States and North Carolina law. Recording people in public where there is no reasonable expectation of privacy is completely legal. Absent a specific legal prohibition such as a statute or ordinance, journalists are legally entitled to take photographs in public. Examples of places that are traditionally considered public are streets, sidewalks, beaches, highway rights-of-way, and public parks. While There are some exceptions to the law (such as commanders of military installations can prohibit photographs of specific areas when they deem it necessary to protect national security), people have a very limited scope of privacy rights when they are in public. Rule of thumb, anyone in public can be photographed without their consent except when they are in places where they have a "reasonable expectation of privacy" such as dressing rooms, restrooms, medical facilities, and inside their homes. If you wish not to be photographed in public in the first place, consider staying home. Welcome to the Internet.
