Its most distinctive feature is its long, curved tusks, which are actually elongated incisor teeth used for various tasks, including digging for water and stripping bark from trees. African elephants are known for their intelligence, emotional depth, and strong social bonds. They live in tight-knit family groups led by the oldest female, called the matriarch. These gentle giants are herbivores, consuming a vast array of vegetation, including grasses, fruits, and leaves. Their trunk, a specialized elongation of the upper lip and nose, is a highly sensitive and versatile organ, used for grasping objects, communication, and feeding. These magnificent creatures play a vital role in their ecosystem by shaping the landscape and promoting biodiversity. Unfortunately, African elephants face numerous threats, including habitat loss and poaching for their ivory, leading to declining populations.
