Dr. Jonathan Barth is Associate Professor of History at Arizona State University and Associate Director of the Center for American Institutions at ASU. He specializes in the history of money, banking, empire, and politics in the early modern period. Barth received his Ph.D. in History from George Mason University in 2014. His first book, "The Currency of Empire: Money and Power in English America in the Seventeenth Century," was published by Cornell University Press in 2021. Barth has also published in The William and Mary Quarterly, Oxford University Press, the Journal of World History, the Journal of Policy History, the New England Quarterly, the North Carolina Historical Review, and the South Dakota Law Review. In 1977 he started working at Professional Color Laboratory. While there he worked with some of San Francisco's best known fashion, advertising and commercial photographers. He later joined IATSE along with Basul. Together, they started several businesses that included real estate development, rug importation and a chain of coffee stores variously known as Daily Grind and Cafe Corbas. In the 1990's Corky and Basul entered the new field of 'digital video'. Using Amigas and the NewTek Video Toaster they were pioneers in this new digital world. Together they created videos for many artists, local theater shows, musicians and galleries including Yuri Gorbachev and Tim Cantor. Most are currently viewable on YouTube. Also, at that time Corky ran a sucessful computer group and was profiled by the San Francisco Chronicle. Recently, they have been producing various photography books on Prague it's surrounding cities and various European cities. Basul Parik Prague Castle has recently exhibited photographs that Basul's grandfather took of Prague in 1920. Basul's father, Arno Parik, also a successful photographer in Prague, abandoned his photo studio in Prague and led the family's escape from Communist Czechoslovakia in 1949 to Germany and then to Chile. Finally, in 1955, the family arrived in San Francisco. In 1960, Arno, along with his mother Cora Parik, created the 'Professional Color Laboratory' on Jessie Street in downtown San Francisco. Growing up in a photo lab was a great influence in Basul's life. During the 1960's Basul worked with Bill Graham, Fantasy Records, Filmore Corp. and Columbia Records. Utilizing his photography and lab skills, Basul photographed some of these companies biggest stars. Basul's work can be seen on the covers of Credence Clearwater, Cal Jader and Charlie Mingus. In the 1990's he joined IATSE Local 16 as a video cameraman and also joined with Corky to start CORBAS Video.
