In 2017 while President Donald J. Trump was running the country, his two sons Don Jr. and Eric were running the Trump organization. During this time, a company bookkeeper had listed invoices as "legal fees" for payments to one of Donald Trump personal lawyers named Michael Cohen. In 2023 the DOJ accuse Donald Trump of "falsifying business records" in 2016 an attempt to cover-up another [unknown] crime during his campaign to hide a hide an alleged adulterous encounter with a porn star while his wife was pregnant 18 years previously. The "evidence" was a legal agreement (NDA: non-disclosure agreement) to keep her from selling her story to the media, (regardless of whether it was true or not) to protect his wife, his reputation and his business brand. Wealthy people such as Donald Trump refer to these type of payments when settling frivolous lawsuits and salacious claims, because it's usually much less expense than litigating in court. The porn star (aka Stormy Daniels" basically had her lawyer extort money from Trump via her lawyer who had made the threat to Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen. Cohen, a convicted perjurer, admitted Trump knew nothing at the time and Cohen had mortgaged his own home without telling his wife in ingratiate himself with Trump, hoping to get a job in the White House if Trump was elected President in 2016. But when Trump didn't include him in his transition team to the White House, Cohen became bitter and turned against Trump. As an aside: During the trial, it was discovered that as his lawyer, besides secretly recording his client Trump, he had also stolen thousands of dollars from him. This was a scam trial from beginning to end.
