Structure and Recruitment: Members of the Crypteia were selected from young Spartan men, typically those who had completed their initial military training in the agoge (the rigorous Spartan education system). These recruits were sent out into the countryside, often armed with only a dagger, and were expected to survive on their own while carrying out their missions.
