Was ist Technik eigentlich und was sagt sie über den Menschen, der sie benutzt, aus? Die Technik lässt sich als List beschreiben, die weiß, wie man Dinge, die aus der Welt kommen, nutzbar macht, die Natur überlistet und sich ihrer Kräfte bedient. Das technische Denken ist folglich ein verobjektierendes Denken. Es stellt sich das Seiende als Objekt vor, als etwas Vorhandenes, zur Benutzung verfügbar. Der technisch denkende Mensch sieht die Natur als bloße Ressource. Durch seinen Willen zur Herstellung sowie seinen Fokus auf Nützlichkeit und Verwertbarkeit übersieht der Mensch die eigene Bedeutung der Dinge. So könnte man, in Kürze, die Position des deutschen Philosophen Martin Heidegger beschreiben, der sich in mehreren Aufsätzen mit der Rolle der Technik beschäftigt hat.
