This is a remarkable film of the underwater landslide and tsunami at Valdez, Alaska, taken during the 1964 Great Alaska earthquake. It has never been seen before in its correct sequence. There is no other film that we are aware of that shows the formation of a large submarine landslide. It helps scientists understand the origin of these processes. From a human perspective, it is also valuable because it helps us understand how people respond to earthquakes. A short documentary produced by Michigan Tech and the U.S. Geological Survey profiling the volcanic eruption at Mount Pelee on the island of Martinique in the spring of 1902, and recreates the events leading up to the pyroclastic eruption on May 8, 1902, which killed 28,000 in the city of Saint-Pierre.

Like the Dust Bowl, with its blinding black winds that lasted for years, or the biblical plague of locusts, the blizzard of 1949 was actually not a single event, but a series of storms that began in November of 1948 and continuted into spring. The monumental drifts it left in its wake finally melted...in July. The devastation was so extreme, the Air Force had to airlift drop supplies for towns and farms.
