The House of Mystery is a 1934 Classic American Pre-Code mystery movie directed by William Nigh. In 1913, after pillaging and defiling a temple in India, inebriated archaeologist John Prendergast falls victim to a curse cast by the angered priest. The priest revives a gorilla previously slain by Prendergast and commands it to exact revenge on the desecrator. Fast forward two decades, a partially paralyzed Prendergast resurfaces in the United States, assuming the identity of wealthy philanthropist John Pren. Assembled at his opulent mansion, Prendergast's backers demand their share of the ill-gotten gains. Pren issues a warning, recounting that attempts to repay the stolen fortune resulted in the "spirit of Kali" (the undead gorilla) claiming the lives of two individuals.
