MYSTIC ASTROLOGY

The Ancient Greek aphorism "know thyself" is transliterated: gnōthi seauton; and was the first of three maxims inscribed on the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. In Latin the phrase, "know thyself", is given as nosce te ipsum or temet nosce. Philosophically, it means know what you can do and know what you are here to do. A constellation is an area on the celestial sphere in which a group of visible stars forms a perceived outline or pattern, which has then been given a name. In the days when people could neither read or write, and thus there were no books to learn from, maps to use for navigation, and few paths to follow, the sky was used as a blackboard, and constellations were used as a means of teaching lessons and navigation. The origins of the earliest constellations go back to prehistory. Different cultures and countries adopted their own constellations, some of which even lasted into the early 20th century. Constellations have changed significantly over time. Many changed in size or shape. Some became popular, only to drop into obscurity. Some were limited to a single culture or nation. Now, they are all internationally recognized, named by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and cover the entire celestial sphere. But knowing the older constellations helps us understand the archaelogical meaning of many ancient structures and helps date ancient structures. There are over 7000 species of lizard and they can be found on every continent except Antarctica. They are fascinating, beautiful, diverse, but are not as a whole symbolic. But there is a lizard that has its own constellation - Lacerta - that is important enough to still be one of the 88 modern constellations. Feral cats range freely and avoid human contact. Domestic cats are valued by humans for companionship. But much misinformation is spread about cats. Did you know, for example, that there is no scientific evidence that cats are an effective means of rodent control? And were you aware that hunting behaviour in cats is driven by instinct and not by hunger. Furthermore, because cats are "obligate carnivores" - cat food must contain meat or fish. But did you know game animals, such as springbok from Africa and kangaroo from Australia are being used as pet food. And many ships now factory farming the seas, are catching fish destined for the cat food manufacturers, not for humans. So this video may well debunk a number of myths about cats. So where is the Symbolism? Cats were associated with shamanism and Freya in particular. Freya's carriage is said to have been pulled by cats and she has been depicted flying on the back of a large striped cat. But it is not just myth. Cats are blessed with unusual powers. The giraffe is the tallest living terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant on Earth. Researchers have long been intrigued by the fact it could lower its head to drink and raise it again without appearing to suffer any side effects. Why doesn’t the high pressure of the blood gushing 6 foot to its head, followed by the low pressure when it raises it way back up again, make the animal dizzy or faint? And then they discovered its extraordinary design. The entire animal is a collection of valves, pumps, fascia ... indeed a miracle of engineeing. Many thousands of years ago giraffe were common, vast herds roamed throughout the whole of Africa. Today desertification, the increase in global population and appalling levels of hunting for "sport" have reduced their range to national parks in east and southern Africa. As a consequence, the giraffe is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as vulnerable to extinction. The giraffe's species name is camelopardalis (or camelopard) and Camelopardalis is a large but faint constellation of the northern sky. Symbolically, its reputation for reaching for the sky, to reach the top most branches, linked it to the spiritual path and the tree of life. Furthermore, giraffes have good eyesight meaning their height and eyes enable them to see miles. Orion is a prominent constellation located on the celestial equator. It is one of the 48 Greek constellations listed by Ptolemy and is visible throughout the world. Despite being called Orion in western astronomy, it has many other names and a wealth of pictorial representations. But there is value in studying Orion for this very reason, lest we forget how constellations evolved. In this video we will take a look at the Indian and Chinese astronomical systems, and the system standardised under the International Astronomical Union. Every system has its own myths and stories – and there is no use trying to reconcile them, they will never reconcile because they are different systems. But some myths have crossed systems and got adapted on the way. The Greeks once had a very influential community in India [the Yavana] for example. In Greek mythology, the Ceryneian hind, took the form of an enormous female deer, that snorted fire. And in India it became the thunder and lightning that brought the monsoon rains. The Chinese system does not even mention Orion, it only mentions the three stars of Orion’s belt. So by studying Orion we get a far better idea of how constellations were named and evolved, and how the wonderful storehouse of myths and legends was devised, to help people remember star patterns and how they changed. It should help to bring home just how important the night sky was to populations who relied on the stars for navigation during hunting and migrating. Why is the Bear such an important symbol - both in the past and now? We use bears in everyday expressions, in finance and we have toys - the teddy bear. We use their image in Coat of Arms. But the symbol seems to have so many contradictory meanings. On the one hand Russia is looked on as a bear - humorless and aggressive, whereas Paddington, Pooh and Fozzie bear are all benign. Fozzie is even funny. All bears in nature are big, strong and ferocious with fearsome claws. Their young are closer to the idea of a cuddly bear, but given the way they have been treated, we might be forgiven in assuming even baby bears would fight back if they were hunted and used in bear-baiting, forced dancing or the Asian bile bear market. And once we look hard at the symbolism we find that the bear is not even a symbol of Russia and has never been one, at least officially. The official symbol of Russia is a double-headed eagle. So an apparent muddle. But to understand the real symbolism of a bear we need to go way back and look at the Constellations of Ursa major and Ursa minor. The Dove is a symbol of Love and especially faithful and devoted love. In Roman mythology, for example, the turtle dove was one of the emblems of Fides, the goddess of trust and good faith. Columba is a faint though small constellation. It was originally named Columba Noachi ("Noah's Dove"), referring to the dove that gave Noah the information that the Great Flood was receding. Although the symbolism of The Dove has remained constant, the symbolism has been somewhat ruthlessly exploited by a number of ancient goddesses more traditionally associated with sensuality and sex - even war - not faithful and devoted love. Inanna, Ishtar, Sauska, the Greek Aphrodite, and Venus all used the symbol to attempt to give the impression their love was a dove's love and had nothing to do with sex and power. But the Roman goddess Venus was partnered with Mars, and Mars was principally the god of war and conflict. Gradually over time the dove was looked on as a sacrifice. Faithful and devoted love must be sacrificed in the name of sex, advance and power. But the symbolism of the dove stayed constant.
