Leopoldville was the capital and the largest city of Belgian Congo. The city is situated alongside the Congo River. On May 2, 1966, the Congolese government announced that the nation's major cities would be restored to their pre-colonial names, effective on June 30, the sixth anniversary of independence. Consequently, Léopoldville was renamed Kinshasa.
