THE SYMBOLISM OF THE TAROT

The Tarot cards were not intended for divination or prophesy or even for games. Their original use was to symbolically describe spiritual truths for those wishing to become ‘divine’. Every card in the Tarot has a spiritual meaning. Four of the "rings" that go to make up the Cosmic Egg are called "The Elements". The Names of each of these Elements is based on the heating and cooling of water - Fire, Air, Water and Earth, although Earth is not the 'earth' but might be better thought of symbolically as "ice" - frozen or crystalline Water. Despite the symbolic names, every level is regarded as being ‘terrestrial’ and not ‘celestial’ . And only the Earth level is capable of being perceived with our 5 senses, which means a great deal might be defined as "dark energy". These Elements are found as the Suits in the Tarot cards. Here they are called Disks, Swords, Cups and Wands and in turn these eventually find their way into playing cards as hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades. In other words, the Elements form the backbone of many esoteric symbol systems , so that colours, architectural [masonic] patterns, the vowels of the alphabet , even the so called continents of the T-O maps are related to the Elements by their correspondences. And the Spiritual Path has as its objective the rise above all things terrestrial, and thus a rise above the Elements, to get to the celestial. The Fool is a card in the Tarot, often given the number zero and regarded as the most ‘important’ card in the pack. W. B. Yeats in his Phases of the Moon, noted that of the three important ‘roles’ - the Fool, the ‘Hunchback’[the Tarot Hermit] and the ‘Saint’ [the Tarot Hanged Man], the Fool is at the farthest limits of spirituality, almost not of this earth. The root of the word "fool" is from the Latin follis, which means ‘ that which contains air or Breath’ filled with the breath of life – spiritual energy. In other words, the Fool is divine. It was based on Jerzy Kosinski's English novel Being There which itself is similar to the best-selling Polish novel The Career of Nicodemus Dyzma by Tadeusz Dolega-Mostowicz. Death (XIII) is the 13th trump or Major Arcana card. Early Tarot cards all depicted actual Death represented using a skeleton holding a scythe. But later cards have introduced more subtle interpretations of death, often connected with the cycles of life, the growing interest in reincarnation and the concept of "mystic death". Death means death for all those who are not on the spiritual path, and quite a few on the path who simply did not get to the stage of "mystical death". To deny this would be to deny reality. So this video first looks at "ordinary death" to remind us that we may have an immortal soul, and we may reincarnate, but first we have to die. A second figurative death occurs for very few on the spiritual path, far more profound and far more important spiritually than rebirth, and this ‘death’ is called ‘Annihilation’ or Ego-death. After ‘Ego death’, one figuratively becomes an "Emperor" or "Empress", but not a mundane one, a spiritual one. The strong sense of a separate self must ‘die’, figuratively speaking, and one must be "resurrected" . In mundane symbolism, Tyrian purple was the "imperial" colour, because Tyrian purple dye, was and is, extremely expensive. But spiritually, the Tarot Emperor and Empress represent the highest roles a human can achieve. The colour purple may be used, but it is not Tyrian purple, indeed it does not even have to be purple, as such the Tarot role has no symbolic connection with wealth or power. And it would be wrong to mix the mundane meaning of the words Emperor and Empress with the spiritual meaning that the Tarot uses. The Tarot Emperor and Empress are human but "divine" - "they have let go of everything and discovered the kind of faith that can pass through the darkest moments...." The Hierophant (V) is the fifth card of the Major Arcana in the Tarot. It represents the face of institutionalised, conventional religion and dogma, rather than the private, magical experiences of the mystery religions. He is certainly not the prince of occult doctrine. He is rather the summa totius theologiae, [the sum of all theology]. So the Hierophant is not the male equivalent of the High Priestess. Is the Hierophant even needed? It is argued that if one is to follow a spiritual path, teachers and guidance are needed - but the problem is where to look? How do you know the institution is going to help you and not hold you back? This is the first card with hierarchy represented and the Hierophant is the head of this hierarchy shown above his disciples and even on a throne! Notice, however, that he blocks the view beyond the pillars completely, no one is allowed to "see" what is beyond. The Hierophant is thus performing an identical role, symbolically, to the Devil! He is preventing the "unentitled" from "passing the portal". He is acting as The Gatekeeper. The problem of course is that he judges entitlement. His theology is all from books , none is first hand direct experience [revelation] and the Hierophant makes the decision on whether people are fit to be told the secrets his religion claims to possess. Beneath the Hierophant there may be two acolytes and their presence symbolises how knowledge is transferred - essentially preaching - but he stands in front of a mundane temple, a church or mosque, ashram or synagogue and there is no view. As Lunaea Weatherstone says "can the soul ever be constrained from what it seeks?
