Starting the Build on the Temporary Shed - Day 6
Living the Northern LifeStarting the Build on the Temporary Shed - Day 6 we are adding some extra supports to the trusses. I used my 7 1/4" Milwaukee Fuel M18 skill saw to help me rip them to width, length and the angles. We used both 5ah batteries cutting the lumber so I definately need to get more batteries if we're going to do this offgrid thing! :) Until the next one, keep Living the Northern Life! 2”x6”x16’ Poplar Lumber - Part 2
Living the Northern LifeMilling 2”x6”x16’ Poplar Lumber in Part 2 with the 5 logs we put up on the gangway from the previous episode. We try and get every bit of lumber we can using the mill so that there is very little waste... that we use for first wood so other than the saw dust there is very little waste and we are planning on using the saw dust as well. 2”x6”x16’ Poplar Lumber - Part 1
Living the Northern LifeFirst we are cutting the bases for the drying sheds so that we can put our lumber on them and keep them off the ground! Next we setup the gangway, cut the logs to length and get them ready to be milled. The ground was really wet and we ended up making some ruts in the ground but we're running out of time. Then we were cutting 2”x6”x16’ Poplar Lumber in Part 1. Katie was a great help moving the slab away and speeding up how much wood I can mill. Not lots of talking in this one but we get a lot of lumber milled and piled. Until the next one, keep Living the Northern Life! Starting the Build on the Temporary Shed - Day 5
Living the Northern LifeStarting the Build on the Temporary Shed - Day 5 we start with widening the path so that we can carry 16' lumber from the sawmill to the drying shed. It turned out to be a rainy day so we shut down early but got Elijah to help me put up the straping on the upper part for the shed. We didn't film cutting the tarp in half but now we have 2 tarps large enough for two sheds. We weren't able to get the tarp on but we got the shed all locked down and the strapping completed, Now we just need a less windy day. Until the next one, keep Living the Northern Life! Starting the Build on the Temporary Shed - Day 4
Living the Northern LifeStarting the Build on the Temporary Shed - Day 4 we have to get Big Blue and move the trusses so that we can nail the back sides of them. This is my first time lifting and standing trusses up this way. My stepfather normally does this task but I gotta do it sometime and there is no better time than the present. It took a bit of a learning because Big Blue doesn't have any brakes and so we have to lift and move and try not to detach the cable from the boom that's lifting the trusses from the hook. My stepfather was an iron worker for many years before being involved in a collapse of a conveyor they were installing. The 2 workers fell 40' and the other worker fell on top of my stepfather and he spent a long time in the hospital recovering. (Engineer miscalculated and the structure failed with them on it) All that to say he knows how to hook up so that when I let to book down a bit that it will disconnect by itself when the pressure is released. The second set of three trusses went a long more smoothly than the first set. Once we got the frist truss set it didn't take long to get the other 5 stood up. We got the bottom strapping on this and we knew that it was going to stand there now without any issues. Until the next one, keep Living the Northern Life! Starting the Build on the Temporary Shed - Day 3
Living the Northern LifeStarting the Build on the Temporary Shed - Day 3 didn't started exactly how I had planned but I'm able to get otehr required work done to keep moving the project forward. It can't always goes as planned and sometimes you just gotta role with what comes your way. We get 3 BIG trees pulled out and ready to cut to length. A BIG part of what we need is the boom on Big Blue to lift and set the trusses into place so we worked on getting this completed so that we are ready to go for the next day. We took 2 shorter sections and welded them together so that it is over 6' tall and with the loarder it will lift them18" feet into the air. We are ready for Day 3! Starting the Build on the Temporary Shed - Day 2
Living the Northern LifeStarting the Build on the Temporary Shed - Day 2 is underway and we're making progress. We have some cuts to make left over from Day 1 as we ran out of battery power. We were able to get all 6 trusses built and are ready to stand them into place. It's very nice having the Milwaukee cordless tools here on site as it makes the job easy to setup and teardown. No cords to trip over or generators to have to listen too. We got a lot done and I'm happy with that for the day that's for sure. Until the next one, keep Living the Northern Life! Starting the Build on the Temporary Shed - Day 1
Living the Northern LifeStarting the Build on the Temporary Shed - Day 1 and we made som good progress. It's Layout Day as we start the Build on the Temporary Shed! Making Jigs, setting the bases and building the trusses in halves so that I can roll them over and nail both sides. Thank goodness I bought the Milwaukee Fuel 22 degree framing nailer. Why the less popular 22 degree? Because when we're framing this nailer will do full roundhead 3.5" nails where the 31 degree only does 3.5" offset nails that are not full round head. We're using using the B&C Eagle A238X113/22 Round Head 2-3/8-Inch X 0.113 X 22 Degree Bright Smooth Shank Plastic Collated Framing Nails (500 Per Box) to build the trusses.
