PLANETS IN ASTROLOGY

Although it is self evident that the Sun influences our planet, and the Moon, of course, has a great influence on all things watery, any suggestion that the Planets in our Solar system could be influential in any way, has been rejected, but only because the people of our era couldn’t understand how it worked. But then they don’t really understand how the Moon and Sun work either, they just think they do. But Planets are Aggregates and as such will have functions of their own. So it is not difficult to accept that each Planet has its own functions. What is more difficult to imagine is that each Planet has a ‘Mind’, in fact to most it will seem preposterous. Although Jupiter is described as a "Planet", its symbolism is that of a god. Nevertheless, the physical planet is impressive and a very suitable choice for the King of the Gods. Jupiter is a symbol of power and authority, and whether he is Zeus or Jupiter, Thor or Indus, he is never left alone, always having to face challenges to that power. The myths that surround him only serve to show that once you have power you can never relax, there are competitors, family and even people you thought you could trust out to topple you. A major lesson the myths provide us with, is that the lust for power and control comes with an equal lust for sex - and it is sex, not love. According to Hesiod, for example, Zeus had seven wives and a number of mistresses. But the lesson these myths attempted to convey was that those seeking power, money and control are generally not loving. Indeed many of the Greek myths perfectly capture the nature of the Jupiter man, surrounded by ‘hangers-on, completely lacking in conscience, unfaithful, inconstant, driven by a lust for power and status, wealth and control. So far the role of the Jupiter figure sounds negative and almost thankless. This archetype must be one of the most lonely of all. But the Jupiter archetype is essential, as they provide the focus for the creative. Without the power and wealth of the patron, the imaginative gifted individuals who serve to create a better world would not function. Astrologically, Mars is associated with "aggression, confrontation, energy, strength, ambition and impulsiveness". It is said to "govern sports, competitions and physical activities in general". Mars is also associated symbolically with Red - a distinct deep blood red colour. But Mars was second in importance only to Jupiter and Saturn to the Romans. Why? Pluto in astrology is an archetype - the archetype of intense and violent destruction. But it also symbolises regeneration, transformation and rebirth. It is like the phoenix — burning down what does not work in order to rise again from the ashes. But the destruction can be horrific, whether it applies to a nation, city or person. Pluto in Indian Naadi Astrology, is called Yama, the god of death and justice, responsible for the dispensation of law and punishment. And whereas the West emphasises rebirth as a transformative experience with a phoenix, the East effects a rebirth via flames. So mythologically Pluto = Hades = Yama . All the archetypal entities – Neptune, Uranus and Pluto – are recognised world-wide. And the naming of star clusters, planets and stars was a perfectly valid way of teaching these archetypes, – especially to societies of nomads who could neither read or write. Saturn is the second-largest in the Solar System, after Jupiter and a gas giant. Its most notable feature is its ring system. The physical planet is named after the Roman god Saturnus and all the symbolism is that of the god. Saturn and the Hermit in the Tarot correspond. In the Tarot, you will find him associated with anything that involves social order, conformity and intellect. Saturn is all that we associate with civilisation, and conservatism with a small "c". Uranus is associated with ingenuity, new or unconventional ideas, discoveries, inventions, and revolutions. It also governs genius ... being a planet of unexpected changes, and originality. It may thus represent radical ideas [and people], as well as revolutionary events that upset established structures. In classical Greek mythology, the Titans were the twelve children - both male and female - of Uranus and Gaia (Earth). As such, Uranus was the father of Cronus, the grandfather of Zeus and the great-grandfather of Ares [Mars]. The physical planet was discovered to be a planet only in 1781 by Sir William Herschel. It is visible to the naked eye, but was not recognised as a planet by ancient observers because of its dimness and slow orbit. It didn’t get its final name until 1850. So the Archetype existed before the planet. Its glyph or symbol, "reveals the cross (matter) over the circle (spirit)". The two semi-circles on the sides represent receptivity. Astronomically, Uranus takes 84 years to orbit the Sun, spending about seven years in each sign of the zodiac. It is thus considered a 'generational influence', because it often takes seven years for an idea to take hold, be understood and overcome opposition. Venus [Aphrodite in Greece] represents desire - the desire for pleasure, luxuries, comfort, ease, ... and sex. The 1st-century poet Marcus Manilius described Venus as "generous and fecund". But the first impressions of a benign, beautiful love goddess may be very deceptive. She was, after all, a goddess of war. According to Dr Thomas Apel, "Venus had a fluid sexuality and embraced male and female lovers alike." She was married to the blacksmith god Vulcan, slept with Mars on a regular basis, seduced Anchises and even carried on an affair with Adonis. But she wasn't very kind to her lovers. One of the hymns dedicated to her declares: "She stirs confusion and chaos against those who are disobedient to her, it is her game to speed conflict and battle". It is worth remembering Venus was also the goddess of prostitutes. Venus is associated with myrtle (Latin myrtus), a plant now known to be effective against many sexual diseases. So she may have been the temptation, but she symbolically did at least carry the cure. So Venus symbolically represents an almost other worldly beauty, who has surrounded herself with the symbols of love, peace and purity, but is in reality the ultimate femme fatale, capable of seducing any male married or not, and a terrible danger to health, to marriages, and to peace. It is no accident that one of her epithets was Venus Libertinas.
