Astrology is Earth-centred, the Sun circuits the same band of constellations each year. And astrologers call that band the Zodiac or Ecliptic. The Moon orbits the Earth. It too sweeps out another circle. But the Plane of the Moon’s Orbit is inclined by about five degree to the Ecliptic. Lunar nodes are then the points of intersection of the Moon’s orbit with the ecliptic. Both lunar and solar eclipses occur when the full Moon or the new Moon are near either lunar node. Despite only being two points in space, these nodes are treated by astrologers as though they were planets joined together by “the dragon”. The importance of these nodes has been widely recognised and in Hindu Vedic astrology they are called Rahu and Ketu. The nodes take about 18.6 years, to go through the entire zodiac. This cycle is used by scientists, because the lunar nodes have an effect on Earth's tides – atmospheric, oceanic, and crustal. Lunar nodal precession, for example, is predicted to contribute to a rapid rise in the frequency of coastal flooding throughout the 2030s. The meanings of the North and South Nodes, are complementary but they act like 'amplifiers'. Whatever planet[s] or house they are in, they amplify . And this in turn can create the genius or prophet. But with this gift, we also find horrendous suffering. A unicorn is a mythical animal typically represented as a horse with a single straight but spiralling horn projecting from its forehead. There was a time — not so long ago—when the figurative existence of the unicorn was implicitly believed in. Indeed the translators of the Bible set their seal upon the legend by translating the Hebrew word re’em as 'unicorn.' Symbolically it combines the symbolism of the Horse – and thus a means of ecstatic transport - with that of a single horn indicating direct and speedy flight. It is thus a symbol of advanced spirituality. Queen Elizabeth II’s Royal Coat of Arms has a Unicorn chained by its crown opposing a Lion. The Lion is symbolically ‘male’, and at its worst, a symbol of unrestrained power. The Unicorn is symbolically ‘female’. and in this context is the source of wisdom and intuitive understanding. And this is why many coats of arms combine the Lion and the Unicorn. Those in power need to place the Unicorn, tamed and managed, in the service of the State The Unicorn even has its own constellation – called Monoceros. Its name is Greek for unicorn. The symbolism is old. A ‘Unicorn- like’ creature was depicted in Persepolis, the capital of the Persian empire of Darius. An Empire that included Mesopotamia and Babylonia. Finally, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA has a set of tapestries - The Unicorn Tapestries - woven in Brussels. The tapestries were looted during the French Revolution, but were recovered in the 1850s and restored. John D. Rockefeller Jr. donated them to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1938. A centaur is a being with the upper body of a human and the lower body and legs of a horse. Although theoretically Greek in origin, they are found in Indus valley mythology, medieval bestiary, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, and J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. The most common theory holds that the idea of centaurs came from the first reaction of a non-riding culture, to nomads who were mounted on horses. But a horse, in mystic terms, is a ‘means of transport’ – a symbol of ‘ecstatic flight’. As such there is also a theory that the origins were shamanic. Centaurus is a Constellation. It is one of the ancient Constellations and means ‘centaur’. It is also one of the largest constellations, but the Constellation is not just any centaur, but was named after Chiron who was placed among the stars to be honoured for his courage and achievements. Symbolically, Chiron is known as the “Wounded Healer” - a symbol of regeneration and self help. And the transformation of an apparently appalling beginning into a positive and heroic one. A mermaid or merman has the head and upper body of a human and the lower body up to the waist of a fish. Their character is very variable. Mermaids have been accused of causing perilous events such as floods and storms, others fall hopelessly in love with humans. Suggestions of what they are, even includes that of aliens – "who plunged their space ships into the sea and sent emissaries out with the intention of civilising humanity". But all these suggestions exclude the one that may explain the majority of the "sightings". And this is that the mermaid is symbolic ... and very important. For example, most mermaids have long hair and Long Hair symbolically denotes high levels of spiritual connectivity. Mermaids symbolically carry a Mirror and a comb. The Mirror is a very complex metaphysical symbol. Indeed the combination of symbols points to the idea that this person is a Seer, possibly one of the most talented and enlightened seers, one who is permanently in touch with the spiritual world. But despite this they can still fall hopelessly in love with a human, loving them despite the fact they display a whole wealth of human frailties, indeed they may even give up their spirit life to be with the human they love. Four of the "rings" that go to make up the Cosmic Egg are called "The Elements". The Names of each of these Elements is based on the heating and cooling of water - Fire, Air, Water and Earth, although Earth is not the 'earth' but might be better thought of symbolically as "ice" - frozen or crystalline Water. Despite the symbolic names, every level is regarded as being ‘terrestrial’ and not ‘celestial’ . In other words, the Elements form the backbone of many esoteric symbol systems , so that colours, architectural [masonic] patterns, the vowels of the alphabet , even the so called continents of the T-O maps are related to the Elements by their correspondences. And the Spiritual Path has as its objective the rise above all things terrestrial, and thus a rise above the Elements, to get to the celestial.
