GALATIANS | Cultivate Relationships

Paul's letter to the Galatians addresses Gentile-Christian communities in southern Galatia facing Judaizing influences that arose after his first missionary journey. Paul likely wrote to the Galatians in 48-49 AD from Antioch, Syria after the circumcision issues were stirred up in Galatia but before a decision was made at the Jerusalem Counsel.

Cultivate RelationshipsBIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan shoots the breeze with Pastor Scott Frerking about Galatians 1.1-24. They discuss how Paul is not bashful about sharing his story of Jesus' redemption in his life. They also talk about the background, setting, and date of Galatians. APPLICATION QUESTIONS What aspects of your past do you withhold from people due to the shame or regret it makes you feel? How has God redeemed you from your past? Without talking about your past, how might people glorify God for your redemption without the context of your past? ACTIVATION STEPS If you have not done this, share your story with a family member, friend, or spouse. If you’ve already done this, share where God is currently transforming or redeeming you. Cultivate RelationshipsBIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan shoots the breeze with Pastor Scott Frerking about Galatians 2.1-21. They discuss a timeline of Paul's life up until visiting Jerusalem a second time to deliver financial support. They also talk about how Paul had to confront Peter, Barnabas, and other Jewish Christians over their fear of being rejected by Jewish Christians from Jerusalem. APPLICATION QUESTIONS As a Christian, who in your life have you sought to impress or be accepted by, or not lose their favor or attention? How did you go about accomplishing this? What elements of your personality or behavior did you feel like you had to change for the person to accept you? Why did you want the person(s) approval? ACTIVATION STEPS Is there anyone you have put expectations on (i.e., things the person must do or change) for you to accept, forgive, or be in relationship with that person? Take some time this week to reach out to that person to apologize for putting on this person expectations. DID WE USE YOUR JOKE? Cultivate RelationshipsBIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan shoots the breeze with Pastor Scott Frerking about Galatians 3.1-29. They discuss how the Law was not God's original design; but rather, it was a babysitter for the immature Israelites who didn't want a personal relationship with God. APPLICATION QUESTIONS In your relationships (i.e., parents, spouse, children, friends, siblings, etc.) when or with what issue is it easier to have rigid expectations rather than flexible adaptability? Why is this the case? What have been the outcomes in the relationship or issue because of these rigid expectations? What outcomes has someone’s rigid expectations produced in you? When might rigid expectations be appropriate? ACTIVATION STEPS What might the Holy Spirit be leading you to do this week to help bring resolution to the issue or reconciliation to the relationships you discussed above? DID WE USE YOUR JOKE? Cultivate RelationshipsBIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan shoots the breeze with Pastor Scott Frerking about Galatians 4.1-31. They discuss how the Law is immature and will (in 70 AD) melt away because the mature (Jesus) has come. They also discuss Paul's analogies of the Law (Hagar) and the Promise (Sarah). APPLICATION QUESTIONS Considering that the Law was fulfilled in Jesus along with the real destruction of its practices and rituals during the destruction of Jerusalem, why do we often read Scripture as a Law book for living (a list of dos and don’ts)? What concerns are there if we stopped looking at Scripture as a behavior manual and salvation as behavior modification? ACTIVATION STEPS What creative or new way might you try this week to connect with God that doesn’t involve a “study” of Scriptures? DID WE USE YOUR JOKE? STB079 | BSE | Galatians EP5 | Cultivate Relationships
Cultivate RelationshipsBIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan shoots the breeze with Pastor Scott Frerking about Galatians 5.1-26. They discuss how faith in Jesus brings freedom from the Law and sin; while the Law only brings meaningless mutilation. They also contrast the fruit of living in the flesh with the Holy Spirit and living in the flesh with the Holy Spirit. APPLICATION QUESTIONS When or with whom is it most difficult for you to trust the Holy Spirit? Into what circumstances, relationships, or areas of your life have you not invited the Holy Spirit’s opinion? ACTIVATION STEPS Discuss with a family member, friend, or spouse the areas above. Develop a plan with that person to encourage and equip you to trust the Holy Spirit and live in agreement with how He designed you. DID WE USE YOUR JOKE? STB080 | BSE | Galatians EP6 | Cultivate Relationships
Cultivate RelationshipsBIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan shoots the breeze with Pastor Scott Frerking about Galatians 6.1-18. They discuss spiritual maturity, Christian generosity, and how the measure of our generosity directly impacts the generosity God demonstrates toward us. They also share how numbers-based evangelism is a fleshly, self-focused, approval-seeking false Gospel. APPLICATION QUESTIONS What do you use to measure your Christian maturity against others’? When is it most difficult for you to be generous with your: 1) time; 2) abilities; 3) money; 4) possessions with: 1) non-Christians; 2) Christians; 3) Christian/Ministry Leaders? How is living a Spirit-filled life amidst your job, friends, and family be a truer, more effective form of evangelism than simply telling people about the “Roman’s road” or praying a “sinner’s” prayer? Why might this be more difficult? ACTIVATION STEPS Ask the Holy Spirit to put on your mind 3 people (a non-Christian, Christian, and a Christian/ministry leader) that you are to intentionally care for and sacrificially be generous toward. Then, implement this over the next few days. DID WE USE YOUR JOKE?
