It is also a time people like to build shelters and camps. Well, I have already built a shelter a year ago and now it's time to clean it up, make sure it's still structurely secure and turn the area into a proper camp. I have many ideas that will come into play in this series. In episode 1 we are just getting started. Time can only tell what will come of this camp and I will strive to make it nothing short of epic. A lot of rain is expected from the remnants of hurricane Sally in the days to come and hopefully all the work isn't for nothing. More than likely the creek will wash out like it always does during periods of heavy rain. I attempt to make pine tar or pine pitch glue. This was a failed attempt and it is evident that I need to study up on the processes in order to successfully make tar. Plagued by work after finding my most epic #fatwood score ever, we head back to the #bushcraft camp to pick up where we left off. The mission is to cook up a thick New York Strip steak, camp overnight and make some pine pitch glue. I discover a massive ammount of fatwood while exploring. I have been wanting to make pine tar for a while now because it is very useful and fairly easy to make. All you need is a metal tin, a couple sticks and the main ingredient, pine pitch or pine sap. This piece of pine is absolutely amazing and I plan on making good use of it. Originally published on January 27, 2021 I have to be honest. The design of the shelter at what is known as "Camp Coyote" was very pleasing to the eye. The #bushcraft shelter looked massive and was unlike any other shelter that I've seen. I went with the flow when building the structure and it turned out quite unique. I recently began expanding the area to form it into a larger bushcamp and now my plans have changed some but still involve making a #camp. Over time it became apparent that the functionality of the build was not up to par. The fact that it was wide open to the elements on the sides was a problem even though I could've added walls. #Camping in the shelter wasn't exactly easy as the raised bed was not that level and not long enough to lie down on it vertically with the logs Laying horizontal proved to be very uncomfortable due to different sized and odd shaped logs. I decided to use the existing wood and make a lean-to shelter in the cleared out area behind. This design and larger firepit will enable easier access and provide a more enjoyable camping experience. I plan on beefing up the lean-to with better supports and closing off the front. In this video I am using a new camera and I am still getting used to using it. I decided to do a POV (point of view) video so you, the viewer, can see the process the way I saw it. I don't speak in this video because there was nothing really for me to say. I had a plan and was just doing it. In the next episode (E7) I will go into more detail about my expectations for the camp and continue to work on it. Originally published on YouTube on February 3, 2021 I am back at the #bushcraft #camp and today I decide to build a #fire reflector wall behind the fire pit. A heat reflector is used to retain the radiated heat from a fire in the outdoors It allows you to stay much warmer than just have a fire alone. It is also a good idea to have some type of shelter or reflector behind you as well. There are many variations of these. Some say that log reflector does nothing but absorb heat instead of bouncing it back. Having never built a wooden fire reflector, I am anxious to see if it really works or not. Another positive thing about the reflector wall is it serves as a wind block which is nice to have to keep smoke out of your face and shelter. I used most of the remaining logs from the original shelter and was quite surprised at how much it took to build it. The wall turned out to be pretty large which is alright with me. Camp Coyote is still alive! We will really answer the question, "does a log fire reflector really work?" when we come back to camp overnight in the new lean-to shelter!! In this video I head to Camp Coyote on a #recon mission to recover tools and supplies left there. It has been 6 months since I've been to the camp and it looked exactly how I knew it would, lush and green with plenty of #forest vegetation. When I got to #camp I discovered that some of the structure had fallen. I decided it was time to take it down. I don't need a shelter to camp at Camp Coyote. The good thing is that I'll have plenty of firewood for the next time I camp there. I can alway tarp and/or hammock camp. I may decide to rebuild a shelter in the future but will shift locations slightly but stay in the area. Camp Coyote will always be there and will alway live inside me. I have a cup of noodles after squaring things away. My buddy Steve over at HIKE'N DEEP told me to try out Cup Noodles. He empties the contents into baggies and they weigh almost nothing. Good idea for camp food. These noodles were the basic ones but were tasty nonetheless. Thanks for the tip bro!
