Since ABC took Jimmy Kimmel off the air for his insensitive comments about the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the US has found itself in a vexed debate on free speech. TV stations said they’d refuse to air his show, forcing the network to make the choice - but, after receiving a huge backlash and mass boycott of their streaming services, they have now only just announced Kimmel will be reinstated. Does Kimmel deserve to carry on doing what he does after his comments? On Sunday, Charlie Kirk’s memorial was attended by tens of thousands of Americans and watched by millions across the world. And after two weeks of uproar, including grotesque celebrations on one side and chilling calls for vengeance on the other, Charlie’s widow Erika Kirk seized the moral high ground by saying in a heartfelt speech that she forgives her husband’s suspected assassin. Meanwhile, President Trump’s speech was a slightly awkward mix of eulogy and campaign speech - and the same can be said about the whole event. Joining Piers Morgan to discuss the memorial and the events leading up to it are senior advisor at the US agency for global media, Kari Lake, The Bulkwark commentator Tim Miller, host of Democracy-ish, Wajahat Ali, and Turning Point USA board member Eric Bolling.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk has so far been anything but a unifying moment, from the sick celebrations, to some foreshadowing of vengeance and civil war. Kirk’s death was invoked by organizers of Saturday’s ‘Unite the Kingdom’ march in London; a mass anti-immigration protest, which may have been the biggest this country has ever seen. The distraught words of Charlie’s widow Erika Kirk were likely echoing in the minds of many there. There’s two powerful narratives in direct conflict right now, both in the UK and the US. One side sees an existential fight against the erosion of their culture and their values by people who revile both. The other can only see intolerance and bigotry. As always, the truth is probably on a middle ground that is very rapidly collapsing.
