Aquarius is the eleventh astrological sign in the zodiac. It is Latin for "water-carrier" or "cup-carrier", and its old astronomical symbol is a representation of water. But the symbolism has nothing to do with water [with a small w] but Water [with a capital W], where Water is Spirit. The Constellation's picture has a number of constituents - Man, Woman, Fish, Jar or Vessel, Chalice, Stream of Water. So which ones are symbolically meaningful and why? Water pouring down from above as a river or stream, is constant in all depictions of this sign. But the sign changed over time according to how Spirit Input was received. In Sumer, for example, Aquarius was often depicted with fish swimming in streams flowing from and to a god's shoulders. By the time we get to Ancient Greece, there has been delegation and the goddess Hebe daughter of Zeus and Hera, becomes the ‘cup bearer’. Ganesh - the son of Shiva and Parvati was the Hindu equivalent. But a quite fundamental change appears to have taken place when the move was made to use a human being as the vessel. Capricorn is the tenth sign in the zodiac. Its pictorial representation has the head of a goat, and the tail of a fish . Capricorn as an actual Constellation of stars, is faint. But whereas Cancer was the 'Golden Gate ' through which souls descended from heaven into human bodies, its opposite sign, Capricorn, is said to house the 'Gate of the Gods' where souls of the departed ascended back to heaven. Capricorn 'contains' the winter solstice which, for our ancestors was a momentous time of year, the time that the Sun starts to climb up, appearing higher and higher in the sky each day. This is why the symbol of the Goat is used, goats climb, up and up, just like the Sun. Furthermore, despite its faintness as an astronomical constellation, it has one of the oldest mythological associations. The Babylonians used MULSUḪUR.MAŠ "The Goat-Fish" as a symbol of their god Ea. But why the curly fish tail? The tail signifies something a good deal more important than the rainy season or the time of floods. And one apparently controversial explanation is that our ancestors were attempting to explain the precession of the equinoxes. Cancer is the fourth astrological sign in the zodiac. It is the most inconspicuous figure in the zodiac, yet few heavenly signs have been the subject of more attention, for, according to Chaldaean and Platonist philosophy, it was the ‘the Golden Gate’ through which souls descended from heaven into human bodies. Cancer thus stands symbolically at the gateway between heaven and earth. The crab’s pincers are supposed to remind us that birth is ‘cruel’ as is incarnation. Cancer contains M44 - Praesepe - which is Latin for "manger" or "crib". Near to the ‘manger’ are two stars called ‘the Asses’. And that is why we have nativity pictures of the birth of Christ, with a donkey always behind the manger. But the Scarab - the Dung Beetle - was also a symbol for Cancer. And here the symbolism has the immortal soul, - that part of us that is the most beautiful and innocent, - born symbolically via the ‘Golden Gate’. Once on Earth it finds the symbolic dung of power and greed and spends all its life trying to clear it up. But within the ball of dung a new beetle grows – an egg – from which a luminescent and very beautiful beetle emerges – a god. Gemini is a Sign of the Zodiac. Its name comes from the Latin word geminus 'twofold; twin' and wherever we go in the world, it means the same. As such this archetype must be immensely important. 'Twins' are always mythic beings born of an immortal father and a mortal mother. Most commonly one of the twins signifies the eternal side of man, the other twin indicates the mortal side, however, they also symbolise the counterbalancing principles of good and evil and hence the twins are occasionally portrayed as mortal enemies. And this is why in the Nursery rhyme 'Tweedledum and Tweedledee', they "Agree to have a battle". All Gemini twins are the same sex. From this we know they do not represent the Hieros Gamos or Mystic marriage of the Masculine and Feminine . Sagittarius is a Sign of the Zodiac. It is the constellation of the bow, arrow and archer, Sagire, means to 'seek to know'. Sagittarius is thus a seeker after truth. Sagittarius traditionally ‘rules’ the 9th House of the zodiac, and this is ‘the house of the higher mind’. The Archer's arrow does have a place symbolically, as it indicates that the archetype is a very quick thinker – direct and to the point, logical and rational.
