The Great Hunger: The Story of the Irish Famine
Adaneth - History&PoliticsA 2020 Documentary film written and directed by Ruán Magan, narrated by Liam Neeson. Audio in English with Italian subtitles. 2020 marked the 175th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Irish Famine (1845-1852) which resulted in the deaths of over one million people and the scattering of one million and quarter across the globe. It was a large-scale humanitarian disaster with tragic consequences, especially for those classes at the bottom of the social ladder: the cottiers and landless laborers whose families were almost entirely dependent on the potato for their survival. Based on the Atlas of the Great Irish Famine (published in 2012) and on recent research, The Great Hunger traces the tragic history of the Irish famine of the mid-nineteenth century also in the light of a real class struggle. The British authorities, the landed aristocracy and the Irish Catholic bourgeoisie: none of them did as much as they could to avoid the suffering of 3 million people at the bottom of the social ladder.

The English Civil War: Blood on Our Hands (Part 1)
Adaneth - History&PoliticsA 2005 Two-part Documentary directed by Caroline Ross-Pirie and Tim Kirby. The English Civil War is one of the darkest moments of English history. When Parliament published England's first newspaper – advertising their complaints against Charles I, the effect on men and women who had hitherto known nothing of the affairs of government was seismic. The war tore families apart, cut down a generation in its own back yard, and left relatively more people dead than World War I. Everyday we see wars and disputes fought out in print. This is where it started. Part 1: Brought to life through the personal testimony of contemporary witnesses, Part 1 is the story of how, step by dreadful step, the nation turned on itself. Lady Brilliana Harley, under siege in her Hereford home, smuggles coded appeals for help to her teenage son in the army. Former journeyman tanner, Sergeant Wharton, gets a taste for leadership only to die during his first battle. And humble woodturner, Nehemiah Wallington, one of a new breed of news junkies, reveals how the whole terrible human tragedy unfolds. How The Edwardians Spoke
Adaneth - History&PoliticsA 2007 BBC Documentary hosted by Joan Washington. Our understanding of Edwardian Britain is dominated by images from flickering footage and formal family portraits. But a remarkable discovery has been made which for the first time gives voice to the Edwardians. Hundreds of recordings have come to light which reveal the accents and dialects of British Prisoners of War held in German camps and recorded during World War One. This archive presents a unique glimpse into the way ordinary men spoke at the time. Joan Washington, a voice coach and expert in British accents, sets out to tell the story of these recordings and piece together how the Edwardians spoke. She returns to the hometowns of some of the prisoners to meet their families and play them the recordings. Listening with an expert ear to the differences between the voices of the prisoners and their families, Joan explores how far all these accents have changed over the century.108 views -
Queen Victoria's Empire: Engines of Change (Episode 1)
Adaneth - History&PoliticsA 2002 History Documentary hosted by Donald Sutherland, broadcasted as part of PBS Empires. At the time of Queen Victoria's birth in 1819, England was an agrarian society. Within a few short decades, this small island nation would be transformed into an industrial superpower, with an empire spanning the globe. Queen Victoria's Empire is both the story of this remarkable time, and an engaging portrait of a Queen who ruled over a one-fifth of the world's population. It is the story of the influential figures that would shape a distinctively British imperialism: Gladstone, Disraeli, Livingstone, Rhodes, and Prince Albert, Victoria's husband. Whether driven by profit, passion, or noble ideals, these figures would fuel an expansion unequaled in history, forever changing Britain and the lands it controlled. Personal accounts, lush reenactments, and evocative cinematography from former outposts of the Empire, including India and Africa, recount the dramatic clash of personalities and cultures that would drive Victoria's remarkable 64-year reign. Episode 1: Beginning with the birth of Queen Victoria, this episode explores the changes brought to Britain by the industrial revolution. By the 1840s, urban migration has created overcrowding and extremes in pollution and poverty. However, British subjects remain loyal to their Queen. Prince Albert, Victoria's husband, becomes a guiding force in the monarchy. Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone, political stars with starkly contrasting visions of empire, turn the nation's attention abroad. In India, the clash of Victorian values and Indian culture explodes in the Great Mutiny and Cawnpore massacre of 1857. Appalled by the bloodshed, Victoria and Albert draft a proclamation to assume direct rule over India. This episode also reveals the devastating effects of The Crimean War, the first major war of Victoria's reign, and the death of Prince Albert.
