Father Peter McGrath: "I can remember one occasion with a little girl. Her parents had been drowned and her brother had been drowned. It's an extraordinary story . . . When she was resuscitated, she told the nurses and told us that she went into a garden while she was unconscious. She was greeted and looked after by a very kind man who took her to her mother and father, who took her to her little brother who she was worried about. He introduced her to people who were her grandparents whom she had never seen. And the mother told her where to find certain articles and papers when she returned home so she would be OK. She then came back home and found the articles. It appears that not only had she never met her grandparents, but she knew facts about her grandparents that there is no way she could have known. She was most serene, with great hope, at the funeral . . . Dr. Melvin Morse writes: "This is the smoking gun of the near-death world! A patient named Maria, at Harborview Hospital, had a near-death experience that she told Kim Clark about. She rose up out of her body, outside the hospital, and looked down and saw a tennis shoe on a ledge. Something that could only be seen from a helicopter's view of the hospital. "Kim Clark then went to the floor and looked out the window and couldn't see the tennis shoe. But she reached out the window, and sure enough, there it was, and history was made. "I worked at Harborview Hospital during this period of time. I personally spoke with the Respiratory Therapist who was involved with the resuscitation. She clearly remembered both the patient talking about the tennis shoe and Kim Clark finding it. "Oh, but you say, where is the tennis shoe? Why can't Kim produce it? And if Kim had a videotape of her finding the shoe, and affidavits from the Head of the Hospital that it was in fact the tennis shoe? "Well even that wouldn't be enough for some people. What if we got in a time machine and went back in time and showed those people Kim actually finding the tennis shoe? Pam Reynolds Lowery from Atlanta, Georgia was an American singer-songwriter. Cardiologist Dr. Michael Sabom wrote a book entitled Light and Death that includes a detailed medical and scientific analysis of Reynolds's NDE. In 1991, at the age of 35, Reynolds underwent a rare operation to remove a giant basilar artery aneurysm in her brain that threatened her life. The size and location of the aneurysm, however, precluded its safe removal using the standard neuro-surgical techniques. She was referred to a neurosurgeon, Dr. Robert F. Spetzler, of the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, who had pioneered a daring surgical procedure known as deep hypothermic cardiac arrest. It allowed Pam's aneurysm to be excised with a reasonable chance of success. This operation, nicknamed "standstill" by the doctors who perform it, required that Pam's body temperature be lowered to 60 degrees, her heartbeat and breathing stopped, her brain waves flattened, and the blood drained from her head. In everyday terms, she was put to death. After removing the aneurysm, she was restored to life. During the time that Pam was in standstill, she experienced an NDE. Her remarkably detailed veridical (i.e., verified) out-of-body observations during her surgery were later verified to be true. Her case is considered to be one of the strongest cases of veridical evidence in NDE research because of her ability to describe the unique surgical instruments, the surgical procedures used on her, and her ability to describe in detail these events while she was clinically brain dead. Pam Reynolds Lowery ultimately died from heart failure, on Saturday May 22, 2010, at the age 53. "The Moment of Death" is a 2008 National Geographic Documentary on near-death experiences. It features author Mary Roach, doctor Sam Parnia, doctor James Whinnery, researcher David Hovda, near-death experiencer Al Sullivan, doctor Hiroyoshi Takata, doctor Anthony F. Lasala, and another unidentified near-death experiencer. It discusses the NDE-like effects that some pilots experience when exposed to extreme G-Force and includes Al Sullivan’s famous out-of-body experience. Dr. Pim van Lommel, MD, writes: "In our prospective study of 344 patients who survived cardiac arrest we had to come to the surprising conclusion that all the reported elements of a near-death experience (NDE) like an out-of-body perception, meeting with deceased relatives or a life review were experienced during a transient functional loss of the cortex and of the brainstem, with a flat line EEG. During their cardiac arrest people can have veridical perceptions from a position outside and above their lifeless body. NDErs have the feeling that they have apparently taken off their body like an old coat and to their surprise they appear to have retained their own identity with the possibility of perception, emotions, and a very clear consciousness. This out-of-body experience (OBE) is scientifically important because doctors, nurses, and relatives can verify the reported perceptions, and they can also corroborate the precise moment the NDE with OBE occurred during the period of CPR. This proves that an OBE cannot be a hallucination, because this means experiencing a perception that has no basis in "reality", like in psychosis, neither it can be a delusion, which is an incorrect assessment of a correct perception, nor an illusion, which means a misleading image. Moreover, one needs a functioning brain for experiencing hallucinations, delusions or illusions. Additionally, even people blind from birth have reported veridical perceptions during NDE and OBE. Based on several NDE studies it seems inevitable to conclude that veridical perception is possible independently of brain function. In my lecture I will give several examples of veridical perceptions during NDE, and discuss the differences between seeing with the eyes during waking consciousness (Who is seeing? What is seeing?) and perceiving during the period of a non-functioning brain ('apparent unconsciousness during clinical death')." Vicki was born blind, her optic nerve having been completely destroyed at birth because of an excess of oxygen she received in the incubator.
