Hall of Fame was a radio show that aired on NBC in the early 1930's hosted by John McIntire. For their 1934 Christmas show they brought in Walt Disney and his stable of animated characters. This is one of Walt Disney's earliest radio appearances and you get a glimpse at who the popular Walt Disney characters were in 1934. Over the years several of them vanished from the core group but here they are at the dawn of the Walt Disney Studios and their popularity. Both Walt and his characters would go one to appear on several radio shows at the height of the medium.

Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland - Fred Warring Show (1951)
To promote the original release of Alice in Wonderland, Walt appeared on the Fred Warring Show along with several actors from the film who played their characters in person. Walt had been doing similar promotions with his film releases going all the way back to radio in the 1930's. Fred Warring was a popular musician and bandleader in the golden ages of television and radio. His band was known as Fred Warring & his Pennsylvanians and recorded dozens of albums over the years including an album tying in with the release of Alice in Wonderland. The Fred Warring Show ran on radio from 1933 to 1957 and transitioned to television from 1949 to 1954. Warring was a comic strip art collector and had a friendship with Walt Disney so it was natural they would collaborate together on this episode. This presentation is notable for including characters from the book who were cut from the film. Walt had been trying to adapt Alice in Wonderland into a feature film since the early 1930's and when he was finally successful, it was marketed just like all of his previous films had been.

1930's Mickey Mouse Club Theater ad
In the 1930's the original Mickey Mouse Clubs sprang up across America. At one point it was impossible for Walt's organization to keep up with all the charters. These clubs would meet locally in movie theaters, elect a Mickey and Minnie Mouse to lead them, sing the song Minnie's Yoo Hoo, and watch Mickey Mouse cartoons. They were sort of a Boy Scouts type club with members known as "Mickey Mice" and some continued to meet regularly right into the 1960's! The Mickey Mouse Clubs celebrated the American values that Walt Disney filtered into everything he created.
Mickey Mouse club creed:
I will be a square shooter in my home, in school, on the playgrounds, wherever I may be.
I will be truthful and honorable and strive always to make myself a better and more useful little citizen.
I will respect my elders and the aged, the helpless and children smaller than myself.
in short, I will be a good American.
Mickey Mouse club pledge:
Mickey mice do not swear, smoke, cheat or lie,

Walt Disney on Lux Radio Theater (Dec 20, 1937)
Lux Radio Theater was a classic radio anthology series broadcast on the NBC Blue Network (1934–35) (owned by the National Broadcasting Company, later predecessor of American Broadcasting Company [ABC] in 1943–1945); CBS Radio network (Columbia Broadcasting System) (1935–54), and NBC Radio (1954–55). Initially, the series adapted Broadway plays[1] during its first two seasons before it began adapting films. These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences. The series became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s. The primary sponsor of the show was Unilever through its Lux Soap brand. The show reenacted theatrical films as radio plays and was hosted by the legendary film director Cecil B. deMille.
For their Christmas 1937 program, Song of Song, Walt Disney dropped in at the end of the show to plug the world premiere of his new film, Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs. Snow White would premiere less than 24 hours after this. In this rare clip you can hear Walt list of future films that were years away such as Bambi and Fantasia.

From the Manger to the Cross or Jesus of Nazareth (1912)
Walt Disney "historians" always tell us that Walt's first cinematic experience was the 1916 film adaptation of Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs but this isn't accurate. Walt's sister, Ruth, revealed an earlier experience where Ruth and Walt snuck into a theater to see From the Manger to the Cross in 1912. Ruth said that the film had a profound impact on her brother and they marveled at the effects of Jesus being crucified and resurrected.
Their father Elias was a devout congregational Christian, was both a deacon and trustee in their church, and would often preached sermons when their pastor, Walter Parr, was away. Walt's mother, Flora, was the church treasurer and played the organ in the service. Elias was a contractor and built a new sanctuary for their church without charge. The Disneys and Parrs were close friends and when both wives found they were expecting babies at the same time, Elias and Walter made a pact to name their children in each other's honor. Walt was named after Pastor Walter Parr and a few weeks later Elias Parr was born.
Walt would have been familiar with Judeo-Christian values from his upbringing and not only displayed these values in his body of work but wrote about them a few times across his life as well. Influences from his childhood, including his Judeo-Christian values, are evident throughout many of the things Walt created.
From the Manger to the Cross is regarded at the most important film of the silent era portraying the life of Christ. At the time, it was one of the longest and most popular films ever made. In 1998 it was added to the National Film Registry. From the Manger to the Cross was an influential film on young Walt Disney and is an important part of Walt Disney history and deserves to be acknowledged as such.
*Note: Ruth said this was the film they witnessed but all copies in circulation abruptly end after the crucifixion. It's unclear if the final real is missing or if it, indeed, only tells Christ's story from the manger to the cross.

Peter Pan (1924)
This silent film version of Peter Pan was an epic film in 1924. For many years, it was the definitive cinematic version of the story. Sir J.M. Barrie collaborated on the film. The end result is one of the most fanciful films ever made in the silent era.
When Walt Disney secured the film rights to Peter pan, he also bought this film in 1938 to withhold it from public exhibition and thereby creating demand for his forthcoming version. This was customary for film makers to do in the golden age of Hollywood. Some of the visual concepts that originated in this film Walt expanded upon in his 1953 animated version including making Tinkerbell a personality and not just a ball of light.
For years, the film was believed to be lost until it a copy was discovered in a private collection and restored.
In the year 2000 it was added to the National Film Registry.

Opening Ceremonies of Disneyland (1955)
On July 17, 1955 Disneyland opened to the world. Walt Disney had originally intended to include a church on Main Street USA known as the Little Church Around the Corner. This can be clearly in the early art for Disneyland and is described in Walt's prospectus for the park. Clergy from different Christian denominations would be invited guest speakers to give sermons in the church on a rotating basis. When Walt told his nephew, Rev. Glenn D. Puder about his plans, Puder advised his Uncle Walt that it might be considered disrespectful to have a church in a for profit enterprise like a theme park so the idea was scrapped.
Even so, Walt still opened Disneyland with a blessing led by military chaplains representing the three great faith of America; protestants, catholics, and jews. Rev. Puder led the crowd in prayer and asked that this endeavor prosper beneath the hand of God. He always told people that his Uncle Walt had spiritual reasons for creating his park. Once open, Walt frequently had choirs and gospel singers perform at his park -- a practice that continued even well into the Eisner era of Disney. When the park has been rededicated in the After Walt era, no blessing has been observed. It's almost like Walt made a covenant and Woke Disney has broken it.
In the 90’s to counter the boycotts of various Christian groups, Rev Puder and his wife cashed in some Disney stock and funded the construction of a church in the Disney community of Celebration as a tribute to Walt and Roy. The Puders acknowledged that the company their uncles had started needed Jesus.
Rev Puder died in 2011 with little fanfare from the Disney community even though he'd been an important figure at the Disneyland opening day ceremony.
Here you can see the opening ceremony of Disneyland as it was broadcast on national television and was one of the largest viewed broadcasts up to that time. Ronald Reagan hosts this segment where Walt gives his dedication, which was written by Winston Hibler, Rev Puder gives the blessing and leads the crowd in prayer, CA Governor Goodwin Knight gives some remarks and the American flag is raised. You can see Walt cry as the flag flies over Disneyland.
The identities of the military chaplains are:
Bishop Francis Eric Bloy (Episcopalian)
Bishop Gerald Kennedy (Methodist)
Cardinal James McIntyre (Catholic)
Dr Carroll Schuster (Presbyterian)
Rabbi Edgar Margin (Jewish)
Also present are invited representatives from the local houses of worship including 10 Baptist churches, 9 Methodist churches, 8 Lutheran churches, 8 Catholic churches, 7 Christian churches, 6 Church of Christ, 6 Presbyterian churches, 6 Episcopalian churches, 5 Free Methodist Churches, 2 Congregational Churches, 1 Nazarene church, and 1 Jewish synagogue.
Among the invited press are reporters from 8 different religious newspapers.

Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse Theater of the Air - Episode 16: King Arthur (April 17, 1938)
The Mickey Mouse Theater of the Air was a 1938 musical-variety radio series for children, sponsored by Pepsodent and heard on NBC on Sunday afternoons, featuring Mickey Mouse and other characters from Walt Disney's cartoons and comic strips. The program was created to promote the February 1938 release of Disney's first animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
While Walt hadn't yet produced his King Arthur movie, he would buy the rights to the Sword in the Stone the year after this episode aired. The project was worked on off and on until the animated feature The Sword in the Stone debuted in 1963. Prior to that, Walt had considered doing a live action film in the UK of King Arthur after The Sword & the Rose and some early Disneyland materials cite the castle in the center of the park as belonging to King Arthur.

Snow White (1916)
Walt Disney always cited seeing this silent film version of Snow White as being the inspiration for his own adaptation of Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs in 1937. Walt saw this film as a boy in Kansas City at a screening held for the newspaper boys. The film was an adaptation of a 1912 stage play and used much of the same cast. Snow White was distributed by Paramount Pictures and it may surprise you in just how lavish of a fantasy film this was for the time. This film was once believed lost but a nearly complete print was discovered in Europe in 1992. It's fortunate we can look back and see this century plus year old film and see what influenced Walt Disney to create the worlds first animated feature.

Walt Disney on The Jack Benny Hour (1965)
Jack Benny was a legendary comedy star who's largely forgotten today.
The Jack Benny Program was a popular, award-winning radio and television comedy series that ran for over three decades; from 1932 to 1955 on radio and from 1950 to 1965 on television. Benny was also an innovator in civil rights, treating his co-star Eddie "Rochester" Anderson as an equal when many black actors were not at the time. Benny's schtick was he was a cheapskate with his money and a lot of the gags were made at his expense.
In this 1965 episode excerpt, Jack invites his real life friend, Walt Disney, to appear as himself in a sketch where Benny seeks free tickets to Disneyland for his staff. In the next sketch Benny, Bob Hope, and Elke Sommer do a spoof of Walt's masterpiece, Mary Poppins. This may be the only time Walt Disney ever acted on someone else's show. This edited version only includes the Disney scenes.

Walt Disney's Oswald the Lucky Rabbit - Poor Papa (1927)
After the Alice Comedies had run their course due to cost and technical restrictions, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was developed as the lead character in an new all animated series. Walt and Ub Iwerks began the series once they moved into the new Hyperion Studio building.
When the first short, Poor Papa, was rejected by Universal, Walt and Ub went back to the drawing board and redesigned the character to be more like Charlie Chaplin. After Oswald was accepted, the short Poor Papa was tweaked to fit the new character design and became the 21st short released while it was the first one made. The plot of Poor Papa was later reused in the Mickey Mouse short Mickey's Nightmare.
With income gained from the Oswald series, Walt and Roy purchased ten acres of land in the desert. They also invested in an oil-drilling venture. Iwerks also invested his income in several stone mills to crush paint pigment he used to make paint formulas that were utilized by animators for decades.
6 of the 27 Oswald shorts Walt Disney & Ub Iwerks made are believed to be lost.
This is the 1st Oswald cartoon in the series.
