Performance Notes: Franz Schubert’s piece, while originally written for a setting of a secular poem, “The Lady of the Lake,” is likely better known for a later adaptation of the melody to the text of the Catholic prayer, “Hail Mary.” This came about probably because the poem begins with the phrase, “Ave Maria.” Since that time, this setting of the Latin prayer has been and remains perhaps the most popular among the dozens of musical settings of the text. The tempo is quite slow, and may be felt at the level of the eighth-note, rather than the quarter-note. While the accompaniment is a series of arpeggiated sextuplets, the melody is subdivided largely in duplet rhythms. As his ship was tossed by a fierce storm, he wrote that if he and those aboard his ship were spared, he would devote his life to God. Later in his life, he did just that, becoming an Anglican clergyman and a staunch abolitionist. Years after his experience on the night of that storm, he wrote poetry detailing his experiences and his conversion to the faith. The song speaks to the promise of redemption to all who cast away sin and become believers. When playing the piece, the soloist should be cognizant of the pianist's role. At points, the solo instrument is a secondary player accompanying the piano. English Translation: Springtime is upon us. The birds celebrate her return with festive song, and murmuring streams are softly caressed by the breezes. Thunderstorms, those heralds of Spring, roar, casting their dark mantle over heaven, Then they die away to silence, and the birds take up their charming songs once more. The performers should endeavor to maintain a lightness in the playing. Staccatos will work best if not too pronounced, but rather have shape and some decay. The goal is to imitate, inasmuch as is possible, the sound and style of string instruments. Ornamentation can be a very complicated subject, but pertinent to the trills, two simple guidelines are a good starting place: 1) begin trills on the upper neighbor, and 2) for a fully executed trill, a turn is added to the end of the trill. The latter is not required but is preferred at cadential points. Otherwise, the player may land on the principal note of the trilled sequence before proceeding to the cadence. Parts 1 through 3 are analogous at points to the solo violin parts in the original, and as such should be executed with a very light sound. These instruments, ideally, should be matched. E-flat or piccolo trumpets are preferred (though part 3 requires a switch to a flugelhorn for a portion of the piece (or cornet/trumpet, if flugelhorn is not available). Parts 1 and 2 have some unisons to allow for some rest to be organized. Parts 3 and 4 are autonomous. Performance notes: The “American Dream” has long been thought of by many as something akin to “fame and fortune,” but for me it is much simpler--like the sweet pleasure of sitting in the backyard on a comfortable summer evening watching my children play. This piece is my attempt to capture the feeling of those fleeting and rare “perfect moments” we all occasionally might experience, when everything (at least in our own little corner of the world) is just right. It can be an almost dreamlike experience if you let it, and as you feel it come to an end, the feeling of “just right” may seem to wither, but you are left with happy memories of that moment. I find myself often ruminating on such times and I am thankful for them. The music is in a sense inspired by the music of film composer, Dave Grusin, and in particular, his beautiful score for the movie, “On Golden Pond,” which I first saw in a theater at the age of nine. Ever since then, I’ve been a fool for sentimental music, and for the idea of spending my summers in a shabby, well lived-in house on a lake. The opening is perhaps the most difficult both technically and musically. The lines should be played in a playful manner. The piano begins to form its melody at the meno mosso with interruptions from the soloist. At the Andante con moto, the piano motivates the pace. There should be flow and ebb to each phrase (sempre con rubato). Through the full statement of the melodic section and the remainder of the piece, the flugelhorn and piano move in tandem. Tuba in Eb Tuba in Bb Performance Notes: Fauré’s lovely work, “Sicilienne,” was originally composed in 1893 as incidental music for a comedic ballet, “Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme.” The production was cancelled, and the piece sat essentially unperformed for five years until the composer orchestrated it as incidental music for “Palléas et Melisande.” The piece is most known from a suite of music from 1909, culled from that body of music. While the dynamic of the piece is generally soft, and even the two forte sections should be somewhat measured, the player should not feel unduly constrained to piano and pianissimo. The melody should be allowed to rise and fall as the pitch rises and falls, and the “feeling” of a soft dynamic is more important than strict adherence to it. It is divided into three parts, corresponding to Christ’s birth, the Passion (the conviction and crucifixion of Christ), and the Ascension to Heaven. The famous “Hallelujah” is a song of praise concluding Part II of the monumental work. This arrangement incorporates all the vocal parts and also enough of the accompanying orchestra parts to simulate a full performance. This may be used in conjunction with the voices as well. In the case that this is performed with a choir and keyboard (or other instruments), if wanted, sections may be omitted by the brass, both to avoid covering the voices and to add variety of sound. A timpani part is included, as well as a keyboard part (both optional). For performance, care should be taken to articulate as marked. The tenuto and staccato markings are intentional and are included to indicate the articulation of the voices when singing their phrases. Generally, it is best to err on the side of a softer dynamic. The arrangement is a feature for solo flugelhorn in a flugelhorn ensemble. Part 5 may also be substituted with a Horn in F or E-flat, however all five instruments matching (all flugelhorns, all cornets, all trumpets) is the ideal. instrumentation While the like instruments are an advantage as it relates to blending of chords, it can be a disadvantage for the melody being heard clearly. The accompaniment, mostly a dense chordal pad, should be as dark in timbre as possible, and also underneath the soloist (or whomever is carrying the melody at a given time). The solo part can be livelier in timbre, and while the accompanying parts should mostly be senza vibrato, the soloist should sing expressively. There is a fair bit of dissonance, which is appropriate given the subject. Players should neither accentuate nor hide that dissonance, but just allow it to be. While it may not be ideal, it is left to the performer to decide whether or not this is agreeable. Program notes: Didžiausia Meilė translates to “A Love Most Supreme” in Lithuanian. The title is Lithuanian due to the fact that the piece was written for Algirdas Matonis and his wife Birutė Stundžiaitė, in honor of their anniversary. Both moved from Lithiuania to the Unites States where they live today. The piece is meant to further compliment the couple dur to the fact that Algirdas plays euphonium and his wife the piano. When the euphonium enters, the piano is already playing. This is meant to represent an almost slow stride to the other (Birute) and in a serenading way saying “I love you”. Later, the piano takes the lead. When this happens, this is to represent the natural response of, “I love you too”. The melody is repeated in the left hand to symbolize the natural more mellow sound of the euphonium and blend to it. This is to symbolize the pair becoming one. Next we hear the pair together. The piano playing the melody and this time the euphonium playing sort of an accompanied figure. This should feel like a slow dance. One that feels almost like drifting off to sleep. Inspiration was taken from several Lithuanian lullabies parents sing their children to sleep. Therefore, a rubato feel is not necessarily out of the question. Ritardandos should also almost be exaggerated. Finally, at the rallentando should be stretched and most certainly exaggerated. The piece, originally in B-flat Major, has also been made available in the key of F Major, as that may work better for some instrumentalists. In the midst of a story of feuding families, the aria stands as a tender moment between a daughter (Lauretta) and her father (Gianni Schicchi), as she begs him to allow her to see Rinuccio, the boy with whom she has fallen in love, and who happens to be part of the family with which Schicchi is at odds. While not indicated in the original score, the piece should be performed quite rubato. The marking at the start of the score indicates “Andantino ingenuo,” which would indicate the singer perform with a simple naivety, and a youthful sweetness. The sound should never be overbearing, but warm and affecting. The scoring is unusual as it is for two pianos along with a small orchestra. This movement, “The Swan,” is written for just two pianos with cello. While the soloist plays the swan, gliding along elegantly with the slow melody, the first piano imitates the rippling water with running sixteenth-notes. The second piano, optional here, is believed to represent, with slowly rolled chords, the swan’s webbed feet paddling it through the water. Little has been altered from the original scoring. One small addition is to include, as it is common performance practice, a ritard. and a tempo at measures 17 and 18. The other smaller change is to add slurs which are more idiomatic on a brass instrument. To distinguish the editorial markings from the original, these are shown as dashed phrase marks. As mentioned above, while the second piano part does add a lovely component to the piece, it may be omitted for performance. It is interesting to note that the piece includes an additional measure of music (bar 27 in this setting). This is believed to have been added by a German composer and music editor, Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwenke. Though a common chord progression which was present in many of Bach’s works, the additional measure was intended to improve or correct what was thought of as an incorrect progression. To this day, it is referred to as the “Schwenke Measure.” In performance, the solo line should be performed in a manner which, as intended, floats above Bach’s arpeggiated progression. There should be much expression, but care should be taken not to allow that to extend to careless execution of the rhythms The two lines should exist in parallel without there being a “tug-of-war” between them. Despite the disparity in age, the two seem to be made for each other. The greatest challenge with the melody is keeping the phrasing smooth, and the feeling sentimental, and nostalgic, even as there are some larger interval jumps and square rhythms (dotted-8th-16th). The various ornaments should generally be executed without too much “lilt” or emphasis, however the appassionato section of the piece allows for a moderately exulted feeling to come through, and thus the ornaments may tend to naturally bounce a little bit more. The ensemble is routinely marked two dynamic degrees lower than the soloist. That may be too drastic a difference in practice, however, it is important to always hear the solo line as the primary line, and perhaps only at one place—bars 57 and 58—might the accompaniment lines reach up to match. To avoid any hint of stridence, forte markings were avoided. In place is ”pocof.” This is to underscore the importance of never crossing the line into a brassy, overbearing timbre. A feeling of sad affection should pervade always. Keyboard (optional) Performance Notes: Handel’s oratorio, “Messiah,” tells the story of Jesus Christ and the creation of His Church. It is divided into three parts, corresponding to Christ’s birth, the Passion (the conviction and crucifixion of Christ), and the Ascension to Heaven. The famous “Hallelujah” is a song of praise concluding Part II of the monumental work. This arrangement incorporates all the vocal parts and also enough of the accompanying orchestra parts to simulate a full performance. This may be used in conjunction with the voices as well. In the case that this is performed with a choir and keyboard (or other instruments), if wanted, sections may be omitted by the brass, both to avoid covering the voices and to add variety of sound. A timpani part is included, as well as a keyboard part (both optional). For performance, care should be taken to articulate as marked. The tenuto and staccato markings are intentional and are included to indicate the articulation of the voices when singing their phrases. Generally, it is best to err on the side of a softer dynamic. Baroque music very quickly becomes ponderous when the volume level is not well managed.
